1: We Just Got a Letter
Your pov
My best friend, Awsten and I were putting up party decorations around my house for our graduation party.
"Dude, what even is this?" He chuckled, picking up a strange looking wall decal.
"It's you," I giggled, "That's what you look like."
"No you!" He chuckled.
"Y/n!" My mom called, "The rest of the decorations are in the attic, you'll have to go find them."
"The attic? Dude, isn't that place haunted?" Awsten asked, jokingly.
"Oh yeah, it's full of ghosts!" I giggled as we began up the stairs, "And they're particularly fond of eighteen year old boys with blue hair."
"Really? That's so specific." I pulled down the trap door from above, a set of stairs fell down close behind it opening.
"Well yeah, the person who killed them, also had blue hair." I said as we climbed the steps.
"What? How is that possible? Aren't ghosts from like, the eighteen hundreds? Or something?" He asked. I pulled the string, turning on an old lightbulb that barely worked anymore.
"They don't have to be." We began searching around for the party decorations, joking and whatnot.
"Woah, Awsten, come look at this!" I cried, finding a piece of parchment paper in a random box.
"Woah, where'd you find this?"
"It was in that box over there..."
"That's weird, is it, a letter?"
"Looks like it, probably from my super great grandfather or something," I flipped it to the back, "Woah, there's a map on here!"
"No way, where does it lead?"
"A place called, Hugh-Mann Creek."
"Hugh-Mann Creek? What, is it a town full of aliens or something?" I giggled.
"Yeah, a bunch of aliens trying way too hard to fit in with humans."
"Wait, I know where that is!"
"What?"
"That road right there, and that one too! We take that way to go to my grandma's!"
"Woah, you think we could go?"
"Where? That town?"
"Yeah, we could go for the summer!"
"We don't even know if this place still exists."
"Well," I began, spotting the box of party decorations and picking them up, "If it's not there, we could always turn back and go home. And if it is, we should at least go for a bit!"
"Dude, we could do like, a road trip!" He cried as we began down the steps.
"Yeah, we totally should!"
"Hell yeah..." We began putting more decorations around the house until he had to go home.
"Hey mom, I found this thing in the attic while searching for decorations. Have you ever seen this?" She sat down next to me at the dinning room table.
"I'm not sure..." She began reading over it, "You found this in the attic?"
"Yeah, it was in a box."
"Weird..."
"Look on the back!" She flipped it over, skimming the little map, "Me and Awsten wanna go on a road trip once all this graduation stuff is over."
"Really? When are you two going?"
"I dunno, sometime soon though." She nodded, handing the parchment back to me.
"As long as you don't miss the party, I'm fine with it."
"Cool! I'm gonna get my dress ready n' stuff." I ran up to my room, setting the parchment on my desk, reading it over again. This is gonna be so cool! I wonder what weird things are there? Ahh! I can't wait...
After getting a few more things ready for the party, I shut my lights off and went to bed. My mind was still on the strange letter.
Time skip to da party
"Geoff! Otto! C'mere, Y/n and I found this super cool thing!" Awsten called to his friends as we crowded around in a circle in my room.
"Okay, here it is!" I held it out so everyone could see it.
"Woah, this is sick!" Said Otto.
"Yeah! Y/n and I are gonna go on a road trip there in a few days! And well, I was thinking, maybe you guys could come with us?"
Really? As much as I like hanging out with them, if they come along Awsten will just ditch me! I just wanna hang out with my best friend without them for a bit before college starts and I'm left in the dirt...
"Oh dude, I'd love to. But I got summer camp." Said Geoff.
"Yeah, I'm gonna be traveling all summer. I won't be able to." Otto said, yes! This is great!
"Damn, it woulda been a lot of fun with you guys."
"Yeah, but we'll still have fun!" I said.
"Hell yeah, you guys will be missing out!" The both of us smiled.
"Whatever, we just know you two are gonna be fucking the whole time." And there it is... Every time...
"Eww! No! That's so gross!" We both said various versions of. The two boys just laughed.
"Kids! Cake!" Someone yelled from downstairs.
"Sick!" We all raced down the stairs at the sound of this. The adults sat around the dinning room table while we sat at the kitchen island.
"Awsten, when do you wanna leave?"
"As soon as po...possible..." He said, shoving a piece of cake into his mouth.
"Cool, well, I'm gonna get packed and ready tomorrow. So, whenever you're ready, we can just go."
"Let's go to...tomorrow night! You two! Be there, we might need help packing the car." Awsten pointed to the other two.
"How long will you guys be there?" Geoff asked.
"I dunno... how ever long we want." Awsten answered.
"Dude, what if we stayed all summer?" I asked.
"This dude! This dude right here! She knows what's up!" He pointed to me, we all laughed.
"That is, if you guys even find it." Otto said.
"Oh we'll find it." I stated.
"What if you don't?"
"Then we'll come back, or go somewhere else." I answered, taking the last bite of cake and licking the fork.
"We don't have much of a plan. Just doin' whatever." Awsten explained. They both nodded, also eating the last of their desserts as we kept talking.
Yes it's another time skip
"Y/n! Open up!" Awsten cried from outside.
"I'm coming! I'm coming!" I yelled back, dragging my suitcase behind me.
"You guys are really just, leaving like that?" Otto asked Awsten as I came outside.
"Yeah, don't worry though, we'll be back before college starts. Plus, you two are gonna be off somewhere else anyways."
"Are you guys gonna miss us? Or something?" I asked, putting my suitcase in Awsten's car.
"Well yeah, the first coupla weeks we always do stuff! I'm gonna miss that." Otto said.
"I'll miss you guys too." Awsten said.
"I'm sure you guys'll have fun. I mean, it's just the two of you so, anything can- Ow!" Awsten started whacking Geoff with my pillow, taking it from the trunk.
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" He cried, "It's not funny anymore! It never was funny!" The two boys snickered.
"Seriously guys, after the billionth time, it gets old." I stated, taking my pillow from the blue haired boy.
"Not to us." They just kept laughing. My mom came outside, coming towards me.
"You got everything?" She asked, then proceeded to name off everything I could possibly need while I just said, "yep" to everything. She sighed, then gave me a hug.
"Be careful out there. But have fun. Awsten, keep her safe please. Don't let her wander off."
"Aye aye!" He saluted her. She rolled her eyes.
"Have fun you two, don't get into any trouble."
"I can't promise anything," Awsten said, I just gave him a look, "Sorry... we won't do anything..."
"That's more like it, Geoff, Otto, are you joining the two?"
"Nah, I got summer camp n' he's got vacations."
"Hmmm, well, I guess you two are off now. Call me when you get there or to a hotel, unless it's like, three A.M. then, please don't." I giggled.
"Alright mom, I won't," Awsten climbed into the drivers seat while I sat in the passenger, "Bye mom, love you!"
"So long, and goodnight!" Awsten cried out the window as we drove off, map in my hands, with a long journey ahead.
As we drove, the music blasted loud. The both of us singing along like the dorks we are.
"The world is a vampire..." We both began, "Sent to drain, secret destroyers..." Until we ended up screaming, "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage!"
We both laughed, still singing along. The long summer night finally becoming swallowed by the dark sky. The further we drove, the city became less and less as we entered through the forest. Staring out the window, trees crowded the street sides.
Wow... I always love driving through here... it's got sort of a... magical... whimsical sort of feel... oh, I'd love to run through there...
"Dude, it looks so cool out here." Awsten smiled.
"I know, right? It's beautiful..."
"I can't believe Geoff and Otto couldn't come along! They are seriously missing out..." I don't wanna talk about them...
"Yeah, I wonder what everyone else in our class is doing this summer?" I asked, changing the subject.
"Well, Stacy said her family's taking her on a trip to Paris."
"Ugh, of course she's going to Paris. She's always bragging about how cool she is, or whatever."
"She isn't that bad..." I looked at him strangely.
"What do you mean by that?"
"I mean, she's alright. Once you get to know her..."
"Awsten, please tell me you're over her," He was silent, "You two dated for a month! In sophomore year! And she was so mean to you."
"She wasn't that bad! Plus, it's not like you're any different," I sent him a weird look, "Scott..." I scoffed.
"Seriously!? Scott!? How is that the same?"
"You two have been off and on since sophomore year and you're still not over him." He dead panned.
"Please, Scott loves me, he just... doesn't know it." I nervously played with my hair.
"Yeah, sure..." He chuckled.
"And we aren't even together right now..."
"What do you mean? I saw him at the party last night! You two were talking and stuff!"
"Dude, we can still talk and stuff. Even if we aren't together."
"I guess so. I'd rather see you without him anyways, you seem a lot happier." He told me, honestly.
"I don't wanna talk about this anymore..." I yawned.
"Alright, but dude, did you see Nate last night?"
"Yeah, he was still pretty fucked up from that fight." I yawned.
"Yeah, it was pretty crazy." It went silent for a few minutes, my eyes began to get heavy, as I fell asleep.
"Y/n! Psst! Y/n!" I awoke to Awsten lightly shaking me awake, he had gotten out of the car and opened my door.
"Huh?" I lazily let out.
"We made it to a motel. You wanna grab a bag of clothes and head inside?" I nodded, yawning, as I climbed out, and closed the door. Tiredly, we got a room, put on our pajamas, and before I knew it, we sat together on his bed.
"What time is it?" I asked, even though I had checked for myself anyways, "It's past ten, Seinfeld should be on." He flipped through the channels on the foreign motel remote until we saw the familiar faces of Jerry Seinfeld and George Costanza. As if it were any other sleepover with him, I sat close, as my head rested over his shoulder.
It has always been little things like that that made everyone think of us in a certain way... but it never has been that certain way... It never will be that certain way... if I sit close with Ruby, it's considered normal... but as soon as I sit close with him, that all goes away... it's so strange...
Before anymore thoughts flooded through, I had fallen asleep. Soon after, Awsten had as well. In the morning, we quickly got ready, and left the motel as soon as we could.
"How much longer do you think we have?" I asked Awsten as we climbed into the car.
"I'm not sure, maybe like, two more hours?" He said, unsure.
"Mkay, cool, ah! This is so exciting!" I clapped, then grabbed the map, "Okay, but what do you think he meant when he said the town was strange?"
"My theory, personally," Awsten began, starting down the road leading us to town, "I think the town's people are aliens."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, I mean, what kind of town is named 'Hugh-Mann Creek'. It just doesn't sit right," He explained, "Feels very, off to me. What about you?"
"I dunno. I was thinking, maybe, maybe they're like, government experiments. Like, the government probably did their experiments and then left them at this made up town! They could be super-humans!" Awsten gave me a doubtful look.
"You've got a point, but I just have a hard time believing that. You'd think our government could come up with a better town name."
"Well, I don't think it's aliens. Even they could come up with a better town name." I giggled.
"They could be just, normal people and your super great grandpa was just paranoid or something," He thought, "Maybe a schizo, or something."
"Maybe..." I glanced back out my window, "But, what's the fun in thinking that?"
"You've got me there." He chuckled, we drove for quite awhile longer until I spotted something.
"Hey, what's that?" I asked, it appeared to be a worn out sign with the town name on it, barely visible through the thicket of trees.
"Yay! We made it!" He smiled as we drove through, "You think they got a motel? Or something like that?"
"I'd think they would, even if they don't get many visitors. They must've had some sort of something if my super great grandpa stayed here."
"Yeah..." He looked at each of the buildings with no sign of a motel sort of something.
"There's a gas station over there, maybe we could ask for directions? Get some snacks too?" I asked.
"Yeah, sounds good." He pulled in and we entered the small gas station, with a boy in glasses and a beanie, standing behind the counter, where our real adventure was about to begin.
