Chapter Ten
"Your mother is a muggle?"
Luro frowned. It seemed that this was not a very popular thing amongst a few of her pure-blood peers. She did not receive that much ridicule, but there were a few times when the other children would be a bit rude or surprised. This time, it was a Slytherin boy and a Ravenclaw girl. They seemed to be twins.
"Your poor father," the girl teased, "having to deal with her limited wizarding world knowledge." She put on a fake pitying face.
"My father loves my mother very much, thank you," Luro tried to retort. A tear threatened to spill from her eye, but she sucked it back in, hoping they wouldn't notice. If only her friends had been in this class with her...
"Such a shame, only half-magical," the boy continued, "how's that feel? Not being fully a witch?"
"That's enough!" the professor butted in, muttering to herself, "I see times haven't changed all that much for the pure-bloods." She called to the class, "Class dismissed!"
She stopped Luro at the door, "Don't you worry about those two; I'll teach 'em a lesson worth learning. Some of my best pupils were muggle-born, mind you. Lineage doesn't say anything about your magical abilities."
The girl nodded her bushy-haired head, "Thank you." She scampered off to find her friends.
***************
"Ugh, people can be so mean!" Gloria exclaimed angrily. Except, anger was hard for her, so she looked kind of silly.
"You're fine, though, right?" Tobias asked Luro.
She nodded, "Yeh, the professor was really nice. Said she'd deal with 'em."
"Well, that settles that episode then." Gloria concluded with a smile.
"Hehe. Episode," laughed Luro, "Like we're part of a TV series."
"A what?" Gloria asked, puzzled.
"Oh yeah. You're not related to any muggles or anything, are you?" Luro responded.
"Uh, no." Gloria frowned.
"Why?" Tobias asked, "What's a TV series?"
"Ah, I'll tell you later," Luro brushed it off, "It's time for our next lesson, anyway."
"Alright then," Gloria rolled her eyes playfully.
**************
Luro was walking down the hallway when she slammed into another student. They both fell down, books splattering to the ground.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" the student said, grabbing at their books, "I just got here, my parents thought it wasn't real, and I don't blame them..."
They rambled on, running off in embarrassment. Luro rubbed her head and looked up at the flying robe and scrambling footsteps. She slowly raised herself and realized she never really saw the person. She couldn't even tell their gender.
"That was strange," she muttered to herself. Then she gasped, "Oh no! I'm late! Ahhhhhh!"
She gathered herself together and ran frantically towards the staircase that would lead her agonizingly slowly to her next lesson.
She eventually met up with Gloria and Tobias when she went into class. She scrambled in, sitting in the empty space between them.
Tobias leaned over in his seat while the teacher lectured them, whispering, "What took so long?"
"I bumped into some sort of new kid," she whispered back.
"New kid?" Gloria joined the whispered conversation, "Luro, we're new."
"I know, but-"
"Truffle, Squirrelly, Sanchez!" the professor barked. They'd been caught. "Detention!"
"Uh!" Gloria whimpered.
Luro groaned, and Tobias just widened his eyes.
"You heard me!" the professor continued, making a few pupils giggle, "For disrupting the class, you get detention! And 15 points from Hufflepuff, while I'm at it!"
The trio whimpered, groaned and sighed. This was not a good day. They hung their heads and tried to lay low for the rest of the class.
*****************
"Oh blimey, detention was brutal!" Tobias sighed.
"You barely did anything, Toby!" teased Gloria.
The boy growled, "It's Tobias! Nothing else! Just Tobias!"
"Guys, calm down!" Luro flailed her arms at them.
The other two were still upset for a second, but then all three burst out in laughter. An angry growl from the teacher, and they were quickly scampering off to their next destination. At the entry to the Hufflepuff common room, however, they found a rather distraught looking pupil.
"Sorry," the student whimpered, "I think I'm lost."
