Chapter Seven
"So what do you think we should name her?"
Luro and her friends were sitting down by the lake that Saturday. It was a windy-sunny autumn afternoon. They had brought their scarves and were playing with Luro's pet. Northstar was flying around, stretching his wings.
"I don't know," responded Tobias, "There doesn't seem to be one that quite - suits her."
Luro looked down at the animal. It twirled and mewed happily up at her, curling up in her lap. Luro smiled and stroked her, then looked back up at her friends.
"Maybe we could call her... Dewdrop?" suggested Gloria, "Because her eyes are blue?"
"Ummm..." Luro wasn't so sure.
"Yeah," she laughed, "I didn't think so."
The kitten jolted awake and stared at Luro. Luro looked worriedly down.
"What's wrong, kitty?" she asked.
Then she noticed something weird. The winged kitten's sparkling blue eyes were green.
Green.
"Hey guys, check this out," she motioned to her friends.
"Woah," Tobias gasped, "Her eyes turned-"
But he was interrupted by a hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see a mean-looking Slytherin growling at him.
"Hey!" he yelled, "This is our spot!" He gestured to a bunch of other Slytherins who also looked pretty tough and mean.
The kitten hissed and arched her back. Luro tried to calm her, holding her back. Gloria whimpered, and Tobias looked around for a nearby prefect of some sort. Luckily, a Gryffindor one came over.
"Hey," she called, "What's all this ruckus about?"
The boy let go of Tobias and glared at the prefect, "These first-years think they can just come and take our spot!" he told her angrily.
The prefect scoffed, "They obviously didn't know it was where you usually sit! They're new, so sit somewhere else for once; you might like the change."
The boy growled again, but signaled to his group and stormed off; he knew better than to mess with a Gryffindor prefect.
The winged kitten calmed down and her eyes went back to blue. The three thanked the prefect and she went on her way.
"Did you see that!" exclaimed Gloria.
"You mean the rudeness of those snakes?" asked Tobias, still watching them.
"No," Gloria whimpered, still scared.
"Her eyes!" Luro finished.
"They must turn green for danger," Tobias observed, "Fascinating!"
"Like a Hufflepuff badger!" Gloria added, "She hides away but doesn't take attitude." She smiled at herself.
"I know what I'll call her," she smiled at the winged kitten, who purred back. Her friends waited anxiously.
"Hufflepuffle."
**************
"Thanks for letting me borrow Northstar, Gloria," Luro said, continuing to scribble her letter to her parents. She dipped her quill in the ink.
"No problem," Gloria assured her, "Your house was on his way, and he doesn't mind. Do you, Northstar?" She stroked her owl, who was happily waiting on his perch.
Luro finished her letter and signed it. She placed it gently in an envelope and gave it to Northstar. He took Gloria's mail as well, then flew out the window. Luro sighed and walked over to her bed, where her tiny pet was laying.
"How's my Puffley?" she asked, petting her. Gloria turned from the window back at Luro.
"Puffley?"
"What? It's her nickname now," Luro said back.
"Alright," Gloria shrugged, brushing off the windowsill of their room.
Luro smirked and went back to playing with her pet. Then she noticed a loose feather that had fallen on the floor. She looked over at Gloria, pulling out her Chestnut wood, unicorn hair core wand.
"Want to practice that levitation spell?"
Gloria sighed, "You know I stink at that."
"Exactly," she smiled, waving her wand, "Swish and flick!"
Gloria pulled out her wand as well, and the two called at the same time, "Wingardion leviosa!"
The feather hovered confusedly in the air, trying to go in two directions at once, at which point it simply fell. The girls laughed, continuing to practice and train until it was time for them to go to bed.
