Field Trip
Carter's POV.
"In conclusion, Audi Surabia-" Katy Jones said at the end of her presentation.
"Saudi Arabia!" Her partner hissed in her ear. Our class stifled a laugh.
"Oh, of course! Um, what now...Oh, right! Saudi Barabia-" her partner winced, "is not only a great country, but they have had two-" Katy paused. "Um, yellow ages?" She said, turning to her partner again.
"Let me." He muttered, stepping to the front. "Saudi Arabia is not only a well educated country, but they have sparked two golden ages. They have increased their population greatly and are a very important country in today's world. Thank you." He said, returning angrily to his seat.
"Oops, that's what I meant!" Katy batted her eyelashes and the class suppressed a weak clap. That's the difference between our class and others. Most boys would swoon over her, clapping as hard as they could. But our class? Not so much. Always honest. (Well, except for April fools when we pranked the teacher and she asked us if we did it... Or the time we all dressed up in halloween costumes and she asked if we were supposed to... Or the time... Well, you get it)
"Thank you for that um, interesting enlightenment." Our teacher said, almost laughing herself. "Next, We have... Carter and Mary." The teacher read from her clip board.
I grinned and looked across the room at Mary. She grabbed her iPad and I grabbed our binder. I motioned for someone to turn off the lights. When they finally dimmed, I plugged in the iPad.
"We're talking about stereotypes." I saw Dolan face-palm. Well, got his attention.
Dolan's POV
Of course she did stereotypes. Of course. I shook my head and rolled my eyes, waiting for some video on 'bad, stereotypical people', like me. But what happened next surprised me. The video they put up had an add. For beer. "Be a manly man." It said. Carter stepped to the front of the class.
"How many of you look like that?" Carter asked, smiling. She pointed to a buff man with a handle bar mustache, crushing a beer can with his bare hands.
The class clown Damson, raised his hand.
"Very funny Damson." The teacher said. "Carry on."
"When we think of stereotypes, we think of female stereotypes, racial stereotypes, and so on." Mary joined in,"but in reality, stereotypes are anything a person assumes about a group of people or even animals."
Carter clicked a button and a slide showed up. It was a picture of a pit-bull.
"How many of you would pet this terrifying creature in its natural habitat?" Carter said, pointing to a picture of an adorable pit-bull rolling in a bed of stuffed animals. Everyone raised their hands and laughs coursed around the room.
"Exactly." Carter said, nodding.
"It's the same way in humans." Mary said, and this time a picture of a buff man holding an axe standing in the woods. "How many boys actually know how to chop wood? Or how many of you have chopped wood before?" Only one boy raised his hand. "Again, exactly." Mary said.
"Humans are smart, but not smart enough to see everyone individually. We can't comprehend that, and so what we have made to help us categorize people into groups are stereotypes and cliques. Boys have to be strong, girls have to be dainty, people with glasses are nerds. Boys can't like pink, girls can't like sports, and so on." Mary said.
Carter then spoke. "What we as humans need to understand is that everyone is different, a boy can be a ballerina and a girl can be a football player." Ouch, she meant me.
"Thank you." Mary and Carter said, and they returned to their seats.
"Class dismissed!"
Carter's POV
Fall Break, a relaxing week of nothing. I was looking forward to no homework and no practice. Then Dolan told the team the news.
"We have a tournament down Bakersville, CA. Since its four hours away, we're going to do a team bonding weekend. We're going to Sean's beach house after the tournament ends."
All the boys cheered. Not me. 5 days stuck in a beach house with a bunch of hormonal teen boys? Not my picturesque weekend. But I agreed, as the tournament was a big one.
"Sure, why not?" I smiled and turned back to Dolan.
