[ A 550 word summary of my story, written in addition to my extract ]

The story revolves around a creature born in an ocean trench - a prehistoric entity, implied sole survivor of his species, who grew up holding the belief that he ruled the ocean. He is a predatory creature, top of the food chain, and a highly adaptable animal with very high endurance.

He witnesses the extinction of the dinosaurs and the birth of man, but his first encounter with humans comes centuries after. After spotting a ship and going to the surface to investigate, he is attacked with harpoons, the men intending to hunt him. The creature experiences pain for the first time in his life and is outraged, destroying the ship and drowning the men. He develops a vendetta against all humankind. 

This continues for centuries, in which time the creature listens and learns man's language, discovering that humanity refers to him as Kraznak (a name he adopts) and revere him as a god.

As time progresses, Kraznak grows tired of humans attempting to pass what he considers to be his territory and plans to attack at the source (in other words, head to land and attack the shore). He allows a sole ship to pass and follows it to a harbour. The men, meanwhile, celebrate being the first vessel to ever successfully cross those waters.

The captain of this ship is a man known to his crew and all others as Morgan. Having achieved a feat that no other sailor has ever achieved, he too develops a hubristic ego. He introduces the idea that the creature can be killed, proposing that they lure him to the shore and beach him as the tide withdraws, shooting him until he's dead. Research into creating a ship fast enough to outpace the monster goes underway.

As this is happening, Kraznak notices the water is growing uncomfortably warm and the surrounding ecosystem is beginning to die. Unbeknownst to him, this is the result of global warming, accelerating at a rapid rate due to the industrial boom. He blames the humans regardless, cursing them again, before leaving in search of cooler waters.

Several months pass. Kraznak never settles in a new area and begins actively hunting humans. He begins to sink larger ships and attacks closer to land. By this point, the humans have tried and tested several underwater subs, all of which failed to meet the necessary guidelines. They finally test DIANA 11 which is deemed suitable for the mission. Captained by the now internationally famous Morgan, Kraznak is successfully hooked onto to trail of the DIANA 11 and is tricked to swim onto the land, effectively trapping him.

However, through his observance of mankind, Kraznak understands how to move on land and - to everyone's shock - toughens his limbs and begins to crawl back towards the sea. Unaccustomed to the new terrain however, he moves slowly, leaving him vulnerable to attack as the army opens fire. In a final act of rage, Kraznak destroys the harbour, individually drowning those present, including Morgan.

Mortally injured, Kraznak hauls himself into the sea, bleeding severely as he struggles to swim away. He realises that his wound is too great and that he won't survive. Weak with blood loss and weighed down by dying limbs, Kraznak dies, acknowledging his hubris as he sinks back into the ocean trench.
