JT Compher/Tyson Jost's Diary: Wednesday, August 5, 2020

So, I'm not playing today. Nietsy gets the spot and I get relax (actually I'm filming something for the NHL. It's called NHL Cribs: Bubble Life). So I am happily passing on my "Round Robin" diary entry to JT Compher.

Hey, JT Compher here, so I'm tasked with bringing you all a recap of the Avs-Stars Round Robin game. I'm not going to underestimate the Stars at all and say this will be a walk in the park, cause they did best us in the regular season. But, this is going to be a sinch.

Esa Lindell takes an interference penalty on Nathan MacKinnon to kick off the game. We're already going to the man advantage!

Almost immediately into the powerplay, Cale Makar slaps the puck into the back of the net for a goal.

1-0 Avs!

Andre Burakovsky shoots the puck on the next shift and we generate some nice pressure on the Dallas squad.

Jamie Benn takes a shot for the Stars.

Vladdy Namestnikov is with Mikko Rantanen and Nathan for this game. He blocks a shot and leads a rush to the other end. We make a line change and Nieto's line comes on. I watch from the bench as Jamie Benn hits Matt Nieto.

Vladdy comes back out with Nathan and they have a nice chance between the two of them.

Anton Khudobin falls down to save a shot from Nazem Kadri. In the replay I can see that Stephen Johns makes a nice block of Nazem's shot with his ass to help his goaltender out. Nice play.

There is lots of back and forth action that occurs. And there is a missed trip that happens on me. Not like I care. I'm not going to sell anything, mistakes happen. Mikko is tripped up by Tyler Seguin, though. That, the refs do see and so we head back to the powerplay to add to our lead.

Mikko ends up breaking the strap on Khodobin's mask with his wicked shot. Nathan shows off his speed and his talent with an amazing effort.

After that, I win the faceoff and get it to Andre, who passes it to Samuel Girard. He then gets it down to an awaiting Joonas Donskoi, who sends the puck into the back of the net. It's a goal.

2-0 Avs.

Donskoi returns to the bench beside me. "How was that?" he asks me.

I chuckle (yes, I can have a sense of humor) at him. "Perfect PPG, man."

The play carries on, with the clock ticking down to the final minutes of the period. But Samuel Girard takes a cross-checking penalty on Miro Heiskainen and heads to the box, while we head to a PK.

On the kill, I take the ice with my kill partner in Donskoi. I watch as Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin end up colliding with one another and Tyler's stick comes up and gets his own teammate in the face. Jamie falls to the ice in pain.

The Stars manage nothing on net and we kill their powerplay with our strong, dominant PK.

And that's how the period ends. 2-0 Avs on top.

The second period begins with an impressive Cale shot on goal and Vladdy running into Nathan momentarily. (I guess when you play the clumsy Stars, it rubs off on you...) Valeri Nichushkin (or Val) draws a call, a hook from Roope Hintz and we head back to the powerplay.

We're buzzing, full of life at the start of the second. This is more like us.

There is a missed holding penalty call from Harley (a Star's rookie) on me, but I watch as Ryan Graves blasts the puck on net for a shot.

The Stars pinball the puck around, creating takeaways and trying to generate something. I'm not sure what, but they're trying. I'll give them that. And Pavel Francouz makes a nice save on Denis Gurianov.

Vladdy then is hit in the boards a few times by Stars, but he shakes them off, before he is hit again and dropped to the ice.

More back and forth action ensures and Pavel makes a series of five saves in a row to keep us up by two and keep the Stars off the board.

Cale is hit in the chest by a stick, but I can't see who did it. I just see him flinch. But he chuckles and waves it off, saying he's okay and that it wasn't a high-stick at all.

Miro then brings down Gabriel Landeskog with a legal check. But it leads to a rush by Mikko, Nathan and Vladdy. They fly into the zone and showcase stellar passing and play. Nathan gets the puck to Mikko, who gets it on net.

Vladdy dishes a rebound into the back of the goal.

3-0 Avs.

Khudobin falls on his back and lays there, defeated. I let out a chuckle at the action, unable to. I feel bad for the poor guy and for the Stars.

Donskoi and myself generate more pressure and chances on the next shift. Again, Khudobin makes a hilarious looking save on his back as there is a mad scramble before him. But he is able to stop a goal this time.

I head back to the bench and I find myself sitting down next to Vladdy. I watch as the second period winds down and Mattias Janmark trips up Mikko, putting us back on the powerplay.

We'll have a few seconds of it, before we get more of it at the start of the third with fresh ice. We can't get anything going as the buzzer sounds.

Maybe in the last period...

The third period starts with us on the powerplay. Right as it finishes, Cale races into the zone and is then crunched into the boards by a Stars player.

Andre takes over and rips the puck into the net.

4-0 Avs.

Alexander Radulov trips up Nathan and we head back to another powerplay. The man advantage is a shooting gallery practically. Shots coming from everyone and everywhere as we pester Khudobin.

Esa Lindell blocks a shot and is stung, but I can't help but commend his efforts. Even though, it really doesn't matter since there's no way his team can come back from a four goal deficit. Sorry, not sorry.

Vladdy is shoved to the ice and roughed up by a Star. (Again!)

Erik Johnson (EJ) has been hanging out with Samuel Girard a little too much lately as he pulls off one of his signature 'tornade' moves.

There's more back and forth changes and pressure that occurs.

Then Radulov pulls down Vladdy again. But this time, Vladdy isn't having it. He comes back at him with a shove. He backs off as the refs turn their attention on him. He's just telling his fellow Russian to back off and leave him alone, I'm sure.

Mikko hits Radulov in open ice with a nice solid check.

"Ohhhh! The Moose is loose!" I hear Gabriel shout out from the end of the bench.

Val is then checked by Radek Faksa into the Stars bench. Gabriel gets carried away and cross-checks Cogliano, taking a penalty.

We head back to the PK.

On the PK, my skates get caught in a rut on the ice as the clock ticks down in the final period of play. I go sliding behind the net, but I get back up to my skates and launch back into play, not missing a beat and I end up clearing the puck to kill off another call.

Radulov's stick hits Ryan Graves in the face on accident and he collapses to his knees on the ice. The big Russian turns immediately to check on him, giving him a comforting pat on the shoulder.

Thankfully the Avs on the ice see that he isn't hurting Ryan and is checking on him and leave him alone.

Nathan shoots on the net, following that incident. And then there's more Avs pressure with Vladdy, Nathan and Mikko's line. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare takes a shot as he and his linemates take the ice after a turnover is made in the neutral zone.

Overhead, the Tron flashes another one of those funny messages. Last game they had some graphic about the attendance for the game, which was zero. And tonight, the messages reads:

"At the conclusion of tonight's game...please exit your couch safely"

I look back down as play continues before me. There's more Avs pressure and I can feel and sense the Stars letting up.

And that is the game...we end it in the Stars zone and help Pavel to earn a shutout.

Now, back to you, Josty. I hate doing this crap.
