Elias Pettersson's Diary: Tuesday, August 4, 2020
Edmonton, Canada
Western Conference, Sutton Place
This was a much better game from us! Right off the first shift, Tanner Pearson scores a goal and we go up 1-0! I'm so happy as I clap my hands and fist bump them as they come back by the bench.
There's some nice back and forth action that happens, Millsy winning faceoffs and then the whistle blows to finally end the play.
Greenway gets in my face. "Come on and fight me, little baby Canuckling." He shoves me and I don't retaliate. I can't.
He is called for roughing and we head to the powerplay. Millsy pats me on the arm and compliments me for not losing it and going back at him.
I get a few shots off during the ensuing man advantage, but still can't connect for a goal.
Soucy hits me in open ice, but I bounce back and get back into the play as the Wild begin to pour on pressure.
Millsy wins some more faceoffs as the period draws under halfway through and then Koivu for the Wild takes a penalty.
Hartman hits me as we return to the powerplay. Once again, I shake it off and try to help generate a goal or something. But nothing happens on this one.
Then Greenway slashes Sutter and we head to another powerplay. Still nothing on the man advantage.
The Wild are able to take advantage of the lack of goals from us and they manage to score and tie the game up 1-1 from a snapshot.
The clock winds down to the end of the period and we head into the locker rooms stuck at 1-1.
The second period begins with nothing until Millsy sends a nice wrister into the back of the net. I'm driving hard to the net, when I see it ping off the back of the netting. It's in! I spin around and skate over to celebrate with him.
2-1 Canucks!
And so the game carries on with more back and forth action. Block shots and giveaways from the Wild mostly.
Then the Wild giveaway in their zone again, Brock Boeser enters the zone with the puck and drives down to the net with me. I'm locked up with one of the Wild players as the goalie is drawn over to one side, not even sensing or seeing Brock slip in to the side.
He receives my tipped pass and slaps the black disc into the wide open net. Like I mean WIDE open. I immediately turn and throw my arms around him in celebration. Yay! My best friend!
3-1 Canucks!
More back and forth action with more shots on goal. We're really flying this game. The clock winds down to two minutes.
And then one minute.
As the buzzer sounds, the players on the ice come together for a little scrum. Tyler Myers gets whistled for interference against a Wild player, while Spurgeon takes an interference call against Loui Eriksson.
The third period, I'm feeling energy soaring through me. We've got the lead, I have two assists. Life is good!
Fiala takes a shot at one end of the ice and then I answer with a shot of my own.
Then Galchenyuk trips me up and we head to the powerplay once again. I get off about three more shots on goal, but the stupid Wild goalie stands tall and stops ALL of them. I frustratingly throw my stick at the ice.
Millsy pats me and gives me some words of encouragement and then I skate off to the bench.
Bo Horvat gives the puck away a few times as the Wild almost get to generate something. But it is stifled and I'm back on the ice for another shift. And drawing another call on the Wild to send us back to the powerplay as Brad Hunt slashes me.
As time ticks down in the man advantage for us, we're in the zone, keeping play alive and passing, trying to find the weak spot.
Quinn Hughes takes a nice slap shot from the blue line, which is tipped in by Bo Horvat. (Way to make up for the giveaways, eh?!)
We smash together for celebration. I can't believe it as we skate to the bench for fist bumps and I look up at the Tron to see the review.
4-1 Canucks!
There's still lots of game play left though! We have to get through the remaining thirteen minutes! But I'm feeling super excited and pumped!
We trade hits and pressure once again, including Parise laying a hit on me. Then they take the zone and we're scrambling and I watch as Tyler Myers (big doofus!) cross checks Greenway stupidly.
It's okay though, because we have all the momentum on our side and we're able to easily and quickly kill it off.
And then he does it again! He cross checks Fiala this time. But thankfully their powerplay is annulled by Fiala, as he takes a high-sticking penalty against one of the Canucks. I hop over the boards with Millsy.
Millsy wins the faceoff and I take a wrist shot on Stalock. Then Quinn Hughes takes one too. I bounce off Hartman, who gives me a shove. I don't even realize it or who I've bumped into, because I'm just buzzing. So full of adrenaline.
"Don't start something you don't want to, Canuckling!" I hear him snarl as I peel away from him.
Millsy sees it and shoots Hartman a death glare. (Like, don't mess with my son, you asshole!)
With under three minutes left, Fiala recovers a lost faceoff draw to score for the Wild.
4-2.
It's okay we're still winning!
Play carries on, the clock winding down to the final minute of play. We've leaned back and allowed the Wild to really push. But I'm not worried. There's only like 20 seconds left. Like they can score twice in that time.
Once again though, Fiala recovers a lost faceoff and drills a slapshot into the back of the net.
4-3 with ten seconds left.
I'm leaning forward on the bench now.
Bo Horvat wins the faceoff against Eric Staal. The Wild wind up for a final shot from Brad Hunt, which is snared by Markstrom and that's the game!
WE WON!!
