Chapter Three | Seattle Bound
The day has came for Jennifer to fly to Seattle with Meredith and Travis who she hadn't even realised that he was on the same flight. Jennifer had gotten close to Travis since the funeral and he was officially one of her friends, she hoped he thought the same way. It was early on the morning and Jennifer was doing her final luggage check before they left for the airport. Jennifer offered Travis her sofa for the night so the three of them could head to the airport together. Jennifer felt terrible for not letting anyone use Abby's room but it didn't seem right but Travis understood and greatfully accepted the sofa.
"The cab should be here in fifteen" Meredith said sticking her head into Jennifer's room where she was once again wrapped up in Abby's hoodie and still had her locker around her neck.
"Okay. I'll be out in a moment, just need to check I have everything one more time" Jennifer responded scanning her suitcase to make sure she had enough clothes for the two weeks she would be spending in Seattle. Meredith nodded leaving Jennifer to do her checks, Jennifer shoved her chargers into her carry on bag along with her hairbrush and a book for the flight before she finally took her suitcase into the lounge and was ready to go.
"Who's for Starbucks once we get to the airport, I need a coffee" Jennifer said which shocked her, she wasn't much of a coffee drinker, she often preferred tea or a frappe.
"Are my ears deserving me? Jennifer Halstead needing a coffee. I never thought this day would come" Meredith teased Jennifer which made her playfully slap her arm in response.
"It's early alright. Early mornings and lack of sleep equals me needing coffee. Nobody likes a tired Jennifer. Not even me!" Jennifer said making Meredith laugh at the younger woman.
"Okay, we will get you a coffee but you're going to try and get some sleep on the plane!" Meredith said with an authoritative tone to her voice.
"Yea mom" Jennifer smirked. That was one way Jennifer was like Abby they both called Meredith Mom when she said something like that, Meredith sometimes got annoyed with them doing that but she also loved it, she had always took care of Abby and even Jennifer so in some kind of way she was like a mom to the girls even if the age difference was not even that big.
"I can't wait to see the kids again, it's been way too long since I've seen them in person" Jennifer exclaimed happily as the three of them
"They miss their Auntie Jeni, Zola has asked when she'll get to see you again. I told Maggie and Amelia to keep it quiet so we can surprise them" Meredith smiled towards Jennifer who beamed happily.
"I can't wait to surprise them." Jennifer exclaimed.
"Are you sure you're not secretly Meredith's sister. You two are so close to one another" Travis asked in a joking way.
"Mer's my sister even if it isn't biologically. I'm so lucky to have her in my life" Jennifer shrugged simpily. There was nothing else to say she saw Meredith as her big sister and she saw her children as her nieces and nephews.
Jennifer, Meredith and Travis Arrived at the airport, for their coffees and waited in the departure lounge for their flight. Jennifer and Travis spoke about stories from the Job, something Jennifer loved doing. She had so many stories some were ones she wouldn't like to think of but even in them she still found the light. The trios flight was delayed which meant they weren't going to be boarding any time soon which frustrated Jennifer but she guessed it couldn't be helped.
"There was this one time Sylvie and Gabby were both at the Academy, Gabby was a paramedic before she left. But Abby and I were running the ambo for the shift and we were called to this teenage girl who was experiencing extreme pains in her stomach. She lived with her father and he was all religious and protective over the girl. She was pregnant but she didn't know, Abby and I helped her give birth to a healthy baby girl. She named her after both Abby and I 'Jennifer Abigail' she's 5 now and her mom still sends pictures to us to this day and every year on little Jennifer's birthday she sends a thank you message. Days like that make everything worth it" Jennifer smiled thinking back to the now 19 year old and her daughter
"Do you ever think of having your own children?" Travis asked curiously, he thought he might one day adopt but that day wasn't going to be any day soon. Meredith had gone to call Maggie to let her
"I don't know, maybe one day I'd like to have a family maybe adopt but for now I just want to be auntie Jeni' I think that's all I'm made for right now" Jennifer shrugged.
"And besides I'm gay and IVF is expensive so adoption seems like the only possible way" Jennifer shrugged again.
"Theirs plenty of children out there who need families. From what I can tell you'll be an incredible mother when the time comes to it" Travis smiled to the younger woman.
"Thanks, you'll be an amazing father too." Jennifer smiled.
"When's your next shift after arriving?" Jennifer asked changing the subject. She was hopefully going to visit.
"Monday, you can come by if that's why you're asking?" Travis asked Jennifer who nodded.
"Yeah, it was why I was asking. It's okay if it's not the right times I can change the plan. I know Meredith goes back to work Sunday" Jennifer said panicking that it won't be the right time.
"Jen' it'll be fine you coming by. Everyone will love you. I might even be able to pull some strings and get you on a ride along. I'm sure Andy would be fine with it" Travis said, unintentionally saying the last part out loud.
"I couldn't ask you to do that Travis plus I'm meant to be having a break from normal life" Jennifer said, she knew it was technically a break from Chicago, to help her reset after everything but part of her was tempted to accept the offer of a ride along if possible.
"It's your choice. I can ask and you don't have to come out with us, you could always stay at the station with whoever's on desk duty that day" Travis spoke.
"Sure. I guess theirs no harm in asking. But I don't have any turnout gear, I can't really do a ride along in civilian clothing now can I" Jennifer said with a small laugh.
"I'm sure we can sort something out" Travis spoke with a smile. Jennifer smiled letting a yawn out as she leant back resting her head in the wall behind her.
"I wish this damn plane would let us board already, I just want I close my eyes. I can't really do it while sat here" Jennifer complained.
"Close your eyes, I'll wake you when we can board" Travis told Jennifer who looked unsure to him
"I know you're tired, just close your eyes and if you fall asleep I will wake you. Promise" Travis said in a soft tone to the younger woman, reluctantly she nodded and closed her eyes.
3pm came and the trio landed in Seattle after boarding was delayed by 8 hours, they finally boarded the plane at just before 11am. Jennifer had slept long enough before the flight that she was wide awake the whole journey, she read some of her book and listened to music for the whole journey and by the time the plane landed Jennifer was desperately needing to use the toilet.
"As soon as we get inside I need to pee" Jennifer practically whispered to Meredith who laughed at the redhead.
"You go to the toilet. I'll get your suitcase and wait for you" Meredith reassured Jennifer who smiled gratefully.
"Thanks Mer"Jennifer responded with a smile on her face as she joined Meredith as they walked off the plane. Jennifer smiled a small smile as it was raining, something you could count on in Seattle was rain and if you asked Jennifer she would tell you that the rain in Seattle always made her feel a lot better, that some how it is different than Chicago but she couldn't explain it.
"Abby would love this weather" Jennifer said smiling looking back towards Meredith.
"She always loved rain and jumping in puddles like a little kid" Meredith laughed. Jennifer knew that was definitely true, often when it rained in Chicago Abby would drag Jennifer out into the rain and they would act like little kids, it was one of Jennifer's favourite memories; dancing, singing and being absolute idiots in the rain.
"I'll call you tomorrow after I've spoken to Andy about Monday" Travis said once the three of them had walked into the airports arrival area.
"Thanks Travis. For everything. Abby was lucky to have you as a friend and so am I now" Jennifer smiled as she called Travis her friend, she hoped they were friends.
"She was lucky to have you as her best friend. Don't ever forget that" Travis smiled to the redhead who wrapped her arms around him to give him a hug.
"See you Monday" she then said before they departed and Jennifer headed to the toilets. As Jennifer locked herself in a cubical she all of a sudden had a wave of sadness was over her. She never been back to Seattle without Abby but dispite that she also felt happy, Seattle was always part of her. It was home even if she wasn't born there.
"Snap out of it Jeni, you are going to be fine. You love Seattle and you're going to make new memories and make Abby Proud" Jennifer mumbled to herself before doing what she needed to do. The redhead then washed her hands and took herself out to find Meredith.
The two women entered the Grey household and it was oddly quiet, Jennifer had expected to hear voices and so had Meredith.
"Is it always this quiet?" Jennifer asked as she walked further into the house wondering if it was always quite at this time of the day on a Friday afternoon.
"Never" Meredith responded curiously.
"Welcome home!!" The voices of Zola, Bailey and Ellis shouted happily running over to Meredith to hug their mom.
"Welcome home Mer" Maggie said along with Amelia who Jennifer hadn't actually met in person before but she had been on call with Abby before so they had sort of met that way.
"Auntie Jen!" Zola then shouted once she realised who was stood only a little behind Meredith
"Hey kiddo, do I get a hug too?" Jennifer asked the young girl who smiled.
"Of course! I missed you" Zola smiled throwing her arms around Jennifer's waist to which Jennifer wrapped her own arms around Zola.
"I missed you too Zo" Jennifer said before the pair pulled away and Bailey and Ellis hugged Jennifer.
"Look how big you two have gotten" Jennifer said hugging the other two grey children. Pictures didn't really do justice to how tall the any of them had got. It was nice to see them in person.
"Hey Maggie" Jennifer then smiled to Meredith and Abby's sister.
"Hi Jen' sorry I couldn't make it to Chicago for the funeral, I couldn't get the time off" Maggie apologised.
"It's fine. Abby and I both understand that you were working. It would have been like one of us taking the time off for a funeral." Jennifer reassured Maggie.
"And it's nice to finally meet you in person Amelia" Jennifer then spoke turning to Amelia. The two women smiled to one another and Jennifer realised why Abby was so fond of her, Amelia's smile was enough to make anyone melt and it did just that, made Jennifer melt, she didn't understand why though. She'd only officially met Amelia after all.
"That it is, I've seen you so much while on calls with Abby I feel like it's been a long time coming" Amelia smiled as she spoke to Jennifer.
"Auntie Jen, look at what I made. I made one for you and Auntie Abby" Zola said sadly as she showed Jennifer friendship bracelets, a yellow, purple and blue one with the letter 'J' in the middle for Jennifer and the second was pick, Yellow and Blue with a Letter 'A' in the middle for Abby.
"Abby would have loved this Zola" Jennifer smiled giving Zola another hug. Zola handed Jennifer the bracelet she had made for her and immediately the redhead pulled it on with a wide smile on her face.
"I truly love the bracelet Zo' thank you" Jennifer spoke softly.
"Will you wear Auntie Abby's?" Zola asked.
"Why don't you wear the one you made Abby? Jennifer asked curiously, she thought it would be a good idea that Zola wear it.
"Okay" Zola smiled. Jennifer then remembered Abby had brought the three children something before she died and she had packed them so she could give them to the three of them but she thought maybe she could take them out one day while she's in Seattle.
Jennifer went into the kitchen where Meredith and Amelia were now stood talking while Meredith made herself a coffee.
"Coffee or tea for you Jeni?" Meredith asked.
"I've had one coffee and that's enough for me for one day so I'll have a tea please Mer" Jennifer said making Meredith laugh.
"Coming right up" Meredith laughed. Jennifer lent against the side and yawned. She guessed she did still need it catch up on the sleep she didn't really get before the funeral, she wasn't exactly sleeping well now.
"Why don't you go and have a nap when you've drank your drink?" Meredith asked seeing Jennifer looked tired.
"I think I might just do that" Jennifer nodded.
"Are you okay to stay in Abby's room? We can always sort something out if you don't think you're ready to?" Meredith asked, Jennifer wasn't sure, of course she didn't want anyone to feel as if they are kicking them out of their rooms.
"It's fine. It's not like I'm going to kick someone out of their room" Jennifer pointed out.
"I don't mind staying in Abby's room if you don't think you would feel up to it?" Amelia offered but Jennifer couldn't ask Amelia to do that.
"I will be fine. Promise" Jennifer tried to reassure both herself and the others.
"Oh... Mer' do you think I could take the kids out for a day while I'm here in Seattle., Abby had brought the three of them something special before she died and on her death bed I promised her I would give it to them all. I want to make it special" Jennifer said quietly not wanting to tell the children as it was going to be a little surprise for them.
"Of course you can. Just tell me when you want to" Meredith smiled to Jennifer.
"Are they at school this week? If not maybe Wednesday day?" Jennifer asked
"They have the week off from school. Wednesday works for me. I'm working but your more than welcome to use my car" Meredith offered
"Great, and thanks. You know I wouldn't wreck it" Jennifer nodded. As she drank her coffee she came to a realisation, in the short time that she had been in Seattle she'd felt a lot better already, she's felt happier and couldn't wait for the next two weeks so she could hopefully become her old self once more.
