Chapter 23 - The Kind of Hero I Want to be

White grayish smoke swirled around Bakugo as he stood there, staring across the lot. He felt a soft wind pull up from behind and scatter the smoky substance away.

He had never felt calmer, though he could feel everything around him, his senses going wild with excitement, anticipating his next move. He had one goal in mind: retrieve Midoriya from the bastard.

After the initial shock at the enormous amount of energy let loose from Bakugo's explosion, they wasted no time in preparing for what was to come.

One by one, they formed a v-line to his sides, taking a fighting stance. Looking to his right, he smiled as his friend's eyes met his. They nodded to each other, a silent understanding between the two. Kirishima would have his back, they all would.

On the other side of the enclosed area, Todoroki was barely able to stand, having serious scrapes on both legs and arms. He could feel blood staining his torn clothes as he stood, supporting his weight on the crate that contained Midoriya.

"Fucking bastard..." he said, anger evident in his tone. The blond had broken through the cage he had worked so hard to overcome, and he'd done it in one go. He coughed up some blood as he tried to straighten up.

Taking a look around, he noticed how most of his security had been affected by the blast; most were lying motionless and others were barely sitting up. "Fucking Bakugo." He spat, anger building, boiling now, practically evaporating.

He took out a small remote-like device and clicked one of its buttons, 'Plan B." he thought, taking deep breaths.

Soon, rumbling could be heard behind the members of class 1-A as another semi tore through the entrance, drove past them and came to an abrupt stop next to the dual color haired boy.

It's back doors opened all too soon and what seemed to be about 50 men in clad black armor marched their way out onto the area, all carrying FN P90's.

"Are those...?" asked Uraraka, not needing to finish the question.

"Machine guns." Iida finished her sentence.

Katsuki wasn't worried about the assholes with guns, 'Fucking extras!' he scoffed. He was worried about the last person to exit the vehicle and what they were carrying.

"Is that...?" this time it was Mina that broke the silence.

The last man to leave the truck was carrying what looked like a child, a small girl to be exact. She was dressed in a small white hospital gown and sported lots of bandages on both arms. Looking a little closer, Katsuki was able to make out what he thought was a small horn protruding from the child's forehead.

"Sir, we've brought the girl." They heard one of Todoroki's men inform him. "She seems to have passed out after the last extraction."

"Put her in the cage with this one." He commanded, signaling to where he had Midoriya enclosed.

Said green-haired teen was barely conscious, holding on to what little bit of life was still in him. The image of blond spiky locks and ruby red eyes racing through his mind, keeping him there, keeping him alive.

The sound of a lock coming undone had him barely backing into one of the corners, afraid of what might come. He felt as a smaller warm body was thrown into his corner, smothering into him, as they both lay there, one unconscious and one on the verge of.

The entire group could now see Midoriya as he lay there. Never before had they seen him looking so weak. It's as if he was completely shattered and they wanted to fix him.

"Bakugo, what are we going to do about the guns?" Kirishima asked his blond friend, trying to hide his fear. Sure, he could harden and defend himself, but what about his friends?

'So it comes down to this.' Thought the blond. 'An all-out brawl...' He was trying to assess the situation and figure out a plan.

"Denki!" he called the boy as an idea struck him. The boy instantly made his way to his side, and Bakugo asked him, "Can you magnetize their weapons and draw them towards you?"

"Mmm, I've never done it, but I'll give it a go...for Midoriya." He said, making the blond smirk at him. He wasn't just about to give up, his friends needed him.

"You better do it now." He said as the armed men began taking aim.

"I want them all nullified!" commanded Todoroki before turning around and ordering his other lackies to load his prisoner's cage into the truck.

"Denki! NOW!" screamed Bakugo.

Kaminari let a surge of electricity flow through him and out towards the men holding the firearms, "Get back!" he warned his classmates.

He could feel how the current flowing out of him began taking its toll as his mind went fuzzy and his legs gave out. On his knees, he continued, he pushed past his limits, and soon most of the weapons were soaring through the air towards him.

As soon as they landed, fire began raining down on them from the remaining armed men. Bakugo and Kirishima made a grab at Kaminari that had fallen from overexerting himself and pulled him away as small red objects impacted where they had been standing.

'Those aren't bullets...' though Katsuki as the rest of his classmates took cover with what they could. Yaoyorozu was producing thick bulletproof shields, standing behind one herself.

"These aren't bullets! Don't' let them hit you!" he warned his classmates. Turning back towards the men firing at them, he saw as Midoriya's crate was being carried into the truck.

His hands acted quicker than he thought as he was soaring through the air, closing the space between him and the boy he was so desperate to save.

'Almost there!' he thought as he blasted a few more shots out of his palms.

Out of nowhere, ice stopped him midflight, forcing him to redirect himself upwards to avoid impacting it. 'Fucking bastard.' He cursed the icyhot boy.

Reaching the top, he landed on the edge and took one look down at this friends. Denki could be seen laying behind Kirishima as he shielded him from whatever it was they were firing.

'I will become a hero who can protect.' Thought Kirishima as more and more projectiles landed on his back, cracking away his defenses. "If it cracks, then harden it again. Bear it! Protect!" he yelled holding onto Kaminari, not a single projectile making it past him.

The rest of them weren't fairing any better. Yaoyorozu sat behind her shield, gasping tired out from all the shields she had produced. She held tightly onto her girlfriend as their defenses were being shot at.

Some of the students hadn't been as lucky and lay on the ground, unable to move. It seemed like whatever was contained in the weapons was immobilizing them.

On closer inspection, he saw how Kirishima's quirk was disappearing and his hardened outer layer of skin was returning to its original state.

Iida wasn't able to keep his thrusters going as he pulled Uraraka to safety. "No..." he said, unable to believe what was happening.

It was erasing their quirks. He saw as the armed men began pulling their shields away and made quick work to shoot at them, leaving them as the substance worked its effect.

Turning back towards the truck, he saw as its doors were being closed and he was torn between going after the boy he loved or saving his friends. "FUCK!" he screamed.

"BAKUBRO!" yelled Kirishima, "DON'T YOU DARE UNDERESTIMATE US! GO AND SAVE HIM! BE A HERO!"

"Tch!" He answered back, a smirk grazing his lips. He was thankful for the friends life had given him.

With one powerful blast, he was off the ice and landing on the truck that had begun closing its doors. Aiming one arm at the roof, he shot open a decent sized whole and jumped in.

Ice colder than winter slammed him into the wall before his feet touched the inside of the truck, "You just don't know when to fuckin quit." Todoroki's voice could be heard from the other end of the truck, echoing off the walls.

"K-Kacchan?" asked a soft voice from within the crate.

"Deku!" The blond screamed back, as his heart warmed at hearing the angelic voice. "I'm gonna get you out. Just give me a sec." he told Midoriya.

Bright scarlet and orange flames shot out towards him, instantly warming the cool winter night. Taking a quick forward roll, the flames barely grazing his feet, he shot out and explosion towards Todoroki.

The truck shook violently as his explosion was countered with another bout of flames, as their quirks collided, Todoroki's flames began expanding into the walls and roof as Katsuki's explosion only finished blasting everything away, exposing them to the cold night.

Moon high in the sky, illuminating the boy in front of him, Todoroki blew Bakugo off the truck activating his ice that had Katsuki frozen onto the concrete ground. Katsuki made quick work of the ice that crept around him, blowing it up to release himself as another beam was shot at his head.

Rolling out of the way, he quickly steadied himself and aimed both arms at Todoroki as a blast shot from his hands. That had the teen flying off the end of the truck.

He wanted to finish him off, but the need to save Midoriya had him pulling in the opposite direction towards the front of the truck.

"Kacchan! Hurry!" said Izuku as the blond blew up the lock. Opening the door, Izuku quickly crawled out pulling the still unconscious girl along with him. "We can't leave her here." He barely said, holding his sides as he tried catching his breath.

"Here, give her to me." He told Midoriya taking the girl from his arms. They quickly, but carefully climbed down one of the sides of the truck, when the air around them seemed to chill.

"He's coming." Whispered Midoriya into his neck as his heart began beating faster, "Kacchan, my quirk...I..." he tried.

"I know. Don't worry." He reassured the smaller teen giving him a soft squeeze as he carried them both around the front of the truck.

They had to make it past the ice in the middle that separated them from the rest of the group. Hopefully they had been able to stand their ground against Todoroki's men and their strange weapon. Once there, they'd make a dash for it.

Scanning the area, seemingly empty, he tightened his grip on the boy and girl and began running away from the truck. Half way out in the open, sharp icicles whizzed past their heads, nibbling at their tussled hair.

"Duck!" said the blond pulling the them down with him. 'Shit!' he thought, having nowhere to go. He could fly off right now with his quirk, but he'd only be able to pull one along with him. Knowing Midoriya, the boy would insist Bakugo save the girl.

Never before had he ever cursed his mediocracy and weakness like he did right then and there. Had he been stronger, he'd be able to take the both of them along. He needed to figure something out, Todoroki was getting really close now, considering and icicle had just grazed Katsuki's left shoulder.

"You have to take her!" said Midoriya, knowing Katsuki would do no such thing, but he had to insist, it's what defined him as a person, it's the kind of hero he strived to be.

"Are you fucking crazy?" he angrily asked the boy, "I'm not leaving you behind, ever again." Izuku could hear the silent promise in those words. His heart warmed at that, but he wouldn't let his feelings come in the way of the child's safety.

Bakugo stood, wincing at the pain in his shoulder, and tried running towards their safety, he just needed to get to the other side. On the other side their friends would help them.

His plans were cut short as the ground beneath their feet froze over stopping him in his tracks and they were being raised off the concrete and high into the night sky.

"It seems like you have things that belong to me, Bakugo." Said Todoroki, aiming a gun at Katsuki as he pulled the trigger.

Before he could react or make sense of what was going on, the small bullet like object hit him hard on the leg, shaking it to the core as it sunk itself and its contents into his body.

'Shit!' he thought. He'd be quirkless now, he'd be useless. He took a hold of Midoriya and the mysterious girl and began dragging them and himself away from Todoroki.

His movements were getting slower, he could feel his fingers numbing, and he could barely keep them in his grasp. "No! No! NO!" he began yelling as his arms slid down to the sides and both Midoriya and the girl were free from his hold.

Todoroki had finally reached them and snatched the girl from his side as he gave Midoriya one hard kick to the stomach that sent him sliding towards the edge.

He managed to stop his fall digging his fingers into the hard-cold ice, breaking a nail or two in the process, which only left the bottom half of his body slowly sliding down into the precipice.

'Save him, Katsuki! You have to!' he cried in his mind, pushing his way to Izuku. 'You already let go of him once.' his hands were trembling as he willed them to move, Midoriya almost completely off the edge.

'This time make sure to keep hanging on to him!' His thoughts screamed as his arms wrapped one hand around one of the boys tattered wrists.

"I'll never let you go again, Izuku, never..." He spoke his promise out to the younger male, holding onto him with everything he had.

Their eyes locked for a moment as unspoken feelings were passed on from one boy to the other. Every moment they had ever lived flashing right before their eyes, as the possibility of death loomed around the corner.

"Let go of him or I let go of her." They her Todoroki threaten. He stood a few feet away from them holding onto one of the lifeless girls arms as he hung her off the edge. "If I can't have him, no one will." He stated as he began loosening his grip on her arm.

"NO!" yelled Midoriya, "Please, she's just a child! I'll come with you." he pleaded.

"I'm not negotiating here. You fall or she does." He said, not willing to give into the request.

"You bastard!" yelled Katsuki, still numb but somehow he had willed his body into catching Midoriya and it wasn't letting go, no matter who was asking.

"Kacchan..." he heard Midoriya, he knew damn well where he was going with this, he wasn't going to let go..

"I told you damn it! I'm not letting you go!" he said, tears pouring from his eyes.

"Kacchan, she's just a child." He tried, a few tears prickling their way out.

"AND I LOVE YOU GOD DAMN IT!" he cried his heart out, "I can't just let go, not now that I've finally got you." The double meaning behind his words wasn't lost to Midoriya, but he had a job to do, he had a life to save, and it wasn't his.

Izuku watched the blond cry his heart out as he held onto him with all he had. He slowly began wriggling his wrist free of Katsuki's hand, having made his decision.

"God damn it Izuku, don't do this..." he pleaded. His heart was on fire, his breathing was erratic, and his eyes were flooding his face in tears as the younger boy's actions were sinking into his mind.

"It's what heroes do, Kacchan. I wasn't strong enough so that no one would worry about me." He said, as the blond's grip was coming undone, "Let me save this one life. This is the kind of hero I want to be." He pleaded with a smile on his face.

With one final tug, his arm was free of Katsuki's grasp and he was falling, he had saved a life and destroyed a heart. "I love you too, Kacchan..." he whispered as he closed his eyes and let the tears consume him.
