Chapter 2 - Working Together

"Kami!" yelled in frustration a small green haired teen as he ran to catch the bus to school.

Making a right turn down the street, he ran as fast as his short legs would let him, annoyed at not being able to use his quirk outside of school.

Finally reaching the bus stop and out of breath, Izuku pulled out some change and waited for the driver to open the doors.

"Morning!" he smiled brightly at the old driver.

"Good morning young man, off to school?" he got as an answer.

"Yes sir!" happily replied Izuku as he paid his fare and made his way to the middle of the bus.

Taking a seat, he began to ponder the previous night. He had been up way past his bedtime unable to stop thinking about his ex 'best friend'.

Over and over he would repeat what he held onto in his heart: "I thought we'd be together forever...we'd become heroes together..."

Clearly upset about the situation in which he was with the person that held a very special place in his heart, young Midoriya cried himself to sleep.

He'd been doing that a lot lately, and it was starting to take its toll on him, he had visible dark bags under his eyes, he had started paying less and less attention in class due to his tiredness.

Yes, Katsuki, his childhood best friend had changed drastically one day, and it hurt, like a bitch.

'I wish I knew what goes on in his head' he thought as the bus made a right turn. 'It'd be so much easier to communicate with him'.

Since Bakugo had presented his quirk, the kid had been bullying Izuku constantly, it had gotten quite extreme, up to the point that he had told him to practically kill himself, he could remember that day as if it were yesterday:

"Fucking nerd! You're never getting into U.A., only I can get into it. How can a quirkless shit even become a hero? Tch, don't make me laugh!" shouted Bakugo at the green haired boy making him wince after every word as if they were knifes digging into his soul.

"Quirkless and still useless!" spat one of Bakugo's groupies. "Why did you ever acquaint yourself with this piece of trash?"

"Stop wasting your time and our air you shit, how about you just jump out the window!" spat the blond, venom in every word.

Bakugo and his group left immediately after that, unaware of how much of an effect their words had on the young green haired teen, more specifically: his words.

'Why must you keep pushing me away Kacchan? What did I ever do to you? Are we no longer best friends, am I not worthy of being considered your friend anymore?' thought young Izuku.

'What if I actually did what Kacchan said...what if I just jump out, I'm sure he wouldn't miss me, so why don't I just do it? What's keeping me back?' he kept on thinking as he neared the window.

At this final thought though, he remembered a moment in their past: "Thanks Kacchan! I promise I will be there with you forever and I will help you and we will be the bestest heroes ever!"

That's right, he had made a promise, a promise he wanted so badly to keep, to fulfill. He never wanted to leave Kacchan's side.

No matter how badly the teen had treated him throughout the years, Izuku kept on striving to keep his promise, though quirkless at the time, he had no idea on how they would become heroes together.

Looking out the bus, he was pulled out of his thoughts when he noticed they were nearing his destination: U.A. High.

After having obtained his quirk One for All from All Might that one wonderous day, he strived even harder to keep his promise to Kacchan. Its just that lately he wasn't so sure it was what he wanted anymore; he was getting tired.

Kacchan had gone through another attitude change in the past few months. After their encounter in middle school, they hadn't seen or spoken to each other until the entry exams to U.A. High.

Kacchan had an initial outburst at having seen Izuku taking the exam, which was short lived, considering he believed Deku to be quirkless and that he had no possible way of passing the exam.

What a blow to the chest did he take when we found out Deku had made the cut and that he would be placed in the same hero course as him: Class 1-A.

After that, Kacchan had simply started ignoring him in every way he could. He'd gone from being a total bully to Izuku to completely acting as if the kid never existed. Confused? Izuku was beyond confused, which is why he's been thinking about this so much.

"Is it worth it to keep on trying?" he mumbled quietly as he felt the bus coming to a stop.

"This is your stop young man!" he raised his head as he heard the driver tell him.

"Oh right, thank you sir!" he kindly thanked the old man as he walked off the bus. 'I need to stop spacing off so much' thought the teen.

As he made his way towards the school, he could hear the chirping of the birds, the rustling of the leaves as they jumped from branch to branch and as a soft autumn breeze blew.

Things like this always calmed him, they reminded him of their adventures in the forest, when it used to be just Kacchan and him. He smiled as the images invaded his mind:

Two young boys walked hand in hand through the forest that surrounded the park they normally played at. The blond boy looked over his shoulder at his friend, sensing his distress. "Don't worry Deku, I'll protect you."

"But Kacchan, it's dark in here and I can hear so many weird noises" spoke the frightened Izuku, barely audible to anyone that might have been nearby, but Kacchan heard him, he always heard him.

Holding on to his little friend's hand tighter, Kacchan pulled on Deku as he said "I'll always be your number one hero, right? So, don't be afraid, I'll keep you safe, always."

Deku could only stare at those ruby red eyes full of so much confidence and determination. He sighed, knowing that he would be ok.

From then on, they made it a habit to tread through the forest. They conquered every tree they could climb, every small hill they could make it to the top of and Katsuki defended Izuku from every strange noise the small child ever heard, keeping his promise.

'What happened to us Kacchan?' he thought as he reached the school doors, any trace of a smile having disappeared.

Making his way into the school hallways, he decided to give it one more shot, decided to give them one more chance at becoming what they once had been.

Fixing a smile onto his lips, with renewed vigor and determination, Izuku pushed open the door to his homeroom class.

Walking into the classroom, he instantly heard his new best friend in the back speaking to her crush. Looking at her, he could see that she was clearly nervous as she was barely looking at her crush, she could also be seen playing with her fingers.

Reaching his desk and giving out a soft laugh at the way she was acting he called out to her "Morning Uraraka!"

Said girl, flustered because of the situation she was in, was thankful for the distraction her best friend had provided her with as she looked up to meet his gaze and smiled, returning the greeting. "Morning Deku!"

Turning to face the man of her dreams, Tenya Iida, she quickly excused herself and made her way towards Izuku. "You're here later than usual, everything alright?"

Her knowing gaze reached his eyes before he was able to respond, he sighed as he tried to explain "I've just not been sleeping well Uraraka, got a lot on my mind I guess."

"Is it about you know who?" she left the question hanging in the air slightly pointing at the seat in front of Deku's, knowing already part of what troubled her best friends mind.

"I don't really feel like talking about it today, if that's alright with you..." the lack of sleep catching up to him, instantly tiring him up, he laid his head on his crossed arms over his desk, keeping his eyes on his best friend.

"Don't worry hon, I get it." She took compassion for her friend, rubbing his back she continued "I know it's hard to face what troubles us, but sometimes it's exactly what we need, you know?"

She offered a kind genuine smile. "We gotta face our fears, fight our demons, that sort of stuff."

"I know, it's just that...no matter how much I keep trying I feel like there's this huge wall that he puts up and won't let me even come close to. It's as if he's trying to completely erase me from his life, but I'll think on it more later, I guess." he forced a smile back.

He was thankful for the comforting smile she gave him and for the little backrub he was receiving. If she kept this up, he might just fall asleep right then and there, kami knew he needed the rest.

Noticing the slightly fake smile he was displaying, fazed by his efforts to hide his pain she responded, "Okay Deku, but if you ever need anyone to speak to, you know I'm always gonna be there for you! Don't ever doubt that!"

She kneeled to his level, bringing her piercing gaze to his suffering one trying to figure him out.

'As if someone hasn't already promised me something similar and look where we're standing now' he thought as she spoke.

"Thanks, Uraraka, I'll keep that in mind." he decided to change the conversation, deeming it way too early to be sad, "How's it going with Iida? Made any progress?" he smirked at the bubbly girl, teasing her.

Slightly taken aback by Izuku's sudden change in attitude and blushing as she took in what he had just asked, she quickly stood up and nervously answered the boy.

"He's as dense as they come. It seems that no matter how obvious I am towards him; he just doesn't catch on." sighing as she shot a quick glance at her crush.

"Keep on trying then, I'm sure Iida must feel the same way towards you. He basically follows you around all day and drools at the sight of you smiling. Kinda reminds me of a p-" he was cut short as an ash blond teen entered the room. "Uraraka I'll get back to you on that."

Turning around to see what had caught Izuku's attention, she giggled once her eyes landed on Bakugo.

"Don't stare too much, he might catch on." she whispered into his ear and made her way back to her seat, deciding class was about to start soon.

Now, Ochaco was no idiot, she knew everything about Izuku, she knew the amount of admiration he held for Bakugo was enormous, and she could also tell by the amount of time the boy spent talking about him that he clearly felt something towards him.

'If he could only figure it out, I'm sure he'd be a lot happier' she thought as she took one final glance at Izuku, noticing the way he lit up as the handsome blond teen walked towards his seat.

"G-good morning K-Kacchan!" Izuku stuttered out as the blond took his seat. He heard a soft 'Tch!' and something else he didn't quite understand as Katsuki turned to face the front of the room.

Not put down by the older teens attitude, he started pulling out his notebook as his homeroom teacher, Aizawa sensei, made his way to the front.

"Morning class, this week we're going to put our focus on teamwork." He said taking out some things.

"In the world of pro heroes, we must understand that we aren't alone. We are constantly surrounded not only by villains and civilians, but we also have our comrades, many of who are ready to help out in a time of need," spoke out the sleepy looking teacher, who for some odd reason always showed up wrapped in a banana colored sleeping bag.

"So as future pro heroes, it is our duty to understand our comrades, what quirks they have, how and when they utilize them, and how we can use them in a way that could be beneficial to the mission at hand."

As he looked around the classroom at his students, his gaze lingered a fraction of a second on two particular teens close to the windows before he continued. "A clear example of this being a hero's sidekick. Who can name..."

As his teacher continued the lesson, mentioning the importance of sidekicks and how every good hero might need one, Izuku couldn't bring himself to stop staring at the back of Katsuki's head. 'What are you thinking about? Kami I wish I had a mind reading quirk, I'd be able to finally understand you' he thought.

"So, to start this week's assignment, I've split you all up into pairs." spoke the teacher, bringing Izuku's attention back to the class.

"The groups are on this list" he motioned to a piece of paper as he waved it at them, "come up three at a time and look for your name and partner, once that's done, I will continue with the instructions. Be quick and be quiet." He said as he laid the list on the front desk and sat down closing his eyes for a quick nap.

Three at a time, as instructed, they made their way to the front. Izuku could barely keep his excitement hidden as he considered the possibility of being paired up with Kacchan.

'This could be a perfect opportunity to get him to speak to me' he basically screamed in his head. Too lost in his thoughts, he barely had enough time to notice that someone was standing to his right calling out his name.

"Midoriya?" called out a bicolored haired teen, a worried look on his face. "Are you alright?"

"Huh?" answered Izuku, snapping out of his thoughts. "Oh, Todoroki, it's you. Is something the matter?"

"I think I asked you first." said Todoroki, laughing at his friend's aloofness. "But to answer your question, nothing's the matter, I just came up to tell you that we're partners for this assignment."

A tad bit sad at having lost an opportunity to speak with Kacchan, though he didn't show it, Izuku kindly look at his friend and said "Really? That's awesome, I can't wait to see what we come up with!"

Considering that Izuku wasn't really looking at him to begin with, he didn't catch the small blush that came over Todoroki's face.

Considering that Todoroki was too caught up in Midoriya's energetic outburst about their assignment, he didn't catch the intense glare directed at him from a certain blond sitting towards the back with his partner.

"Hello? Earth to Bakugo!" a redheaded teen said waving his hands in front of the blond teen trying to get his attention, "Are you paying attention to me?"

Turning to face the person he somewhat considered a friend, "What do you want Kiri?" said Katsuki, still too caught up in what he had just observed playing out on the other side of the classroom.

'Stupid half-n-half bastard getting all fucking stupid with shitty Deku' he thought groaning a tad bit.

"Dude, you weren't paying attention to me! That's not very manly of you!" reprimanded Kirishima, "I said, aren't you happy we get to work as a team?"

"Tch! Yeah, whatever, just don't slow me down shitty hair!" He grumbled out, scowling at his friend, not being able to stop thinking about a certain dumb green haired nerd.

'Fucking day just keeps on getting worse!' he thought as he finally directed all his attention towards Kirishima.

So there's the second chapter, not much development, kind of taking things slowly. I'm not much for making people fall in love instantly, nor do I like rushing through things. I'll get to the good stuff eventually, just have a little patience. Thanks for reading.

As I said in the previous chapter, I'd really enjoy some feedback: am I dragging it out? is it boring? does my writing suck? should I continue this or just give it up? Let me know please. <3
