I see a lot more LGBT+ representation on Wattpad, and that's really really cool! However, I'm sad about how inaccurately trans characters are portrayed, so here's my little tips for writing a trans character!

- DON'T PORTRAY TRANS MEN AS BINDING WITH ACE BANDAGES! It can cause rib damage and internal damage in real life and it's a really bad idea! For similar reasons, don't portray trans women tucking with ace bandages either! But if you do, at least be sure to point out the consequences.

- Trans men aren't "girls who want to be boys" or "boys born in the wrong body", same for trans girls. (Reason behind the second: if someone is of a certain gender, their body is, by relation, also of that gender! So a male-aligning person has a male body, female has female, nonbinary has nonbinary... not from a biological standpoint, but when you write about them you want to avoid these things). A better term to use is AFAB (assigned female at birth) or AMAB (assigned male at birth)!

- Don't misgender your trans characters! If you have a trans man in your story, don't refer to him as "she". You (if you're a good person) wouldn't do that to a real life trans person, so why do it to your character? If you're trying to portray them as "pre-transition", "they" or similar gender-neutral pronouns like "xe" are always good options. Of course, you can have characters talk about them this way for character development / exposition, it just isn't a good idea to do it yourself. <3

- There's an app called Xe (I'll post the link here if I can find it) that's very good for practice in conjugating unconventional pronouns such as xe, ze, and fae, if you should ever need to use them. It also shows you pronunciations!

- Use Diversity Cross Check to get references on the gender you're portraying (if it's not your own) and on transphobia!

Now, remember, this is just my own guidelines for writing a trans character. If you wanna write it another way, go ahead! This is just what I do. Now go out and write, lovelies!
