have i talked about conflict yet? no? yes? idk anymore dude

Conflict is what drives your story. It what keeps your story fresh and not dumb and boring. Pretty much, theres three types:

PERSON VS PERSON

The typical hero vs bad guy situation. This is when a living being is defying your mc. The antagonist is a human (or whatever the equivalent is in your book)

PERSON VS SELF

This is when your character's adversary is themself. It can be nearly anything- daddy issues, anxiety, self esteem, depression, bigotry, etc. Anything thats in the character's head. This is really good for character development.

PERSON VS ENVIRONMENT

Similar to pvs, as the source of the conflict isn't tangible, but its much bigger than that. This is when the environment itself is causing conflict. Things like draught, famine, storms, etc. Anything relating to nature or their surroundings. Present in almost every survial flick ever.

You may think to yourself, "huh, thats easy. i just pick one for my story and im done" you are thinking wrong, hypothetical reader.

You see, just one conflict is boring. Sending your character on a one dimensional quest to slay a dragon is stupid. But what if our knight is trying to recover from a severe fear of dragons, and its preventing him from performing his job? And perhaps there's a big storm that's making his quest to the castle more difficult?

Guys, we're past the point of one dimensional fanfiction. You've gotta step it up. There's gotta be multiple conflicts of all different types going on. Not enough to be confusing, but enough to make everything feel richer.

For me, I like to use a person vs person as the 'main' conflict, and then have several internal conflicts thrown in there and slowly resolved. Though, i have done a book mainly focusing on internal conflict. That was fun.
