-"Dialogue that should end with with period should be ended with a comma when a dialogue tag is placed after it," fancy murmured, "And then you can end the sentence with either a period at the end of the dialogue tag or a period at the end of the next phrase, like this."
"This is not acceptable." fancy hissed. "You should only do that if the action between the dialogue is done separately. This example means I said the first sentence, hissed at you, and then continued, instead of me simply hissing the line. There's a big difference."
"But alas!" fancy cheered, "you only have to use that method with periods! Question marks and exclamation points can be used in tandem with quotation."
-"wow, a giant bear"
"thats a heavy load to bear"
"his skin was bare"
"this is the bare minimum"

-dashes--uh, typically speaking-- often represent a break in the sentence.
-semicolons combine two separate sentences; they are pretty pretentious, however.
-parentheses are for adding extra bits of info (however, i try to avoid using them. they appear unprofessional and slightly sarcastic in context).
-asterisks should not be used. at all. there are no exceptions. *action* is a cardinal sin and i will personally slap you into the next time zone if you give me this in narrative. be a man and describe the diddly darn action.
-an ellipse is "..." three periods. that is all.
