Romance

I'm not strong with romance. Seeing as I rarely experience romantic attraction to people, and never have had sexual attraction to anyone at all, writing romance is hard for me. I kinda have to wing it, and assume I know how to describe the feeling. Have I ever been in love? No not really. I'm a seventeen year old boy with no social life who spend his time writing and drawing rather than actually talk and engage with girls. Because that is the one thing I really, really suck at.

So obviously I'm the best person to dish out advice on writing romance.

So I've heard, writing from experience is good for romantic feeling within a character. But, I do not know what that feeling is. Describing a crush is easy, but I have no idea what falling in love is like.

-Does character A struggling keeping or making eye contact with character B? Does character B find it easy to look into A's eyes?

-When one character finds the romantic interest looking at them, do they get flustered? Blushing isn't the only way to get flustered. I don't blush, because of my skin tone. Keep in mind, if your character has darker skin tones, the less visible blushing will be.

-Do the characters mimic each other?

-Do they get nervous? Don't just make them blush and stutter. Make it hard for them to make eye contact. Or maybe they start tapping their foot/bouncing a leg due to anxiousness. Do they pick their skin? What are their nervous habits?

-Character A remembers tiny details about B. Details like their favorite color, how they refuse to use blue ink, hidden birthmarks, how their eyes change color in the sunlight, etc.

-uncomfortable laughter or smiles

-Love confessions... in another language

-Make them agree to everything the other says

-Always sitting close to each other or leaning in the other's direction.

-Finding ways to touch (not sexual). Bumping shoulders, brushing hands, "you have food on your face, let me get that for you", brushing hair out of the other's face, etc.

Kiss scenes:
I've never kissed a person. Why am I writing this.

I've kissed my cat.

That's it.

-The eyes will dart from the lips to the eyes as if anxious.

-Changing the pitch of their voice lower or higher.

-Eye contact!

-Touching the other's arm.

-Pressing foreheads together or cupping the cheeks.

-Very close proximity.

-Make em nervous if it's the first kiss.

When I've written kiss scenes... which I haven't really... I try to make them short and sweet. I find it awkward when the characters add detail to the kiss and it lasts forever. The description drones on and on and it makes me uncomfortable. Why do that when you could make it cute?

I'm my book, Land of Armonia, I have yet to make an official kiss scene between the two MCs. However, there's a scene towards the end where the boy kissed the girl's cheek. They're in a tough situation, and it's a way to say goodbye to her as he's not sure he'll ever see her again. And because she's a stubborn character, she literally doesn't think anything of it.

The scene is short, and sweet. You wouldn't notice it if you were skimming, which makes it all the more precious in my mind. A short lived treasure if you will.

Romantic scenes are hard to write without making them awkward or cheesy. There's a certain art to perfecting romance it seems. Think about your favorite canon ships between characters in franchises you've seen. How did their relationship develop and why do you like it? What did the creator do to make the ship work? If your readers don't ship your characters, then obviously you did something wrong. You want your readers to root for something, so don't make it happen to fast. Slow burns are great. Tease and torture your readers. Be evil. Do crime.

What are some examples of great canon ships in the media? Here's a list of them of my opinion:
MJ x Peter (Tom Holland) is great because it Carrie's out all the awkward teen romance stuff, while remaining wholesome and sweet. The movies don't focus on their relationship either, which is perfect for the spiderman series to thrive.
Todoroki x Momo (My Hero Academia) These two only ever have sweet moments together. An important part of their relationship is that Todoroki respects Momo as an individual, while she's used to being treated like an object. When they're paired together, he lets her lead. He doesn't believe that because he's a man, he's any better than her. And I think it's perfect representation.
Sokka x Suki (Avatar; The Last Airbender) Like todomomo, Sokka and Suki perfectly balanced each other out, and feed you with the respect women juice. They're both strong, and break gender roles together. She's a strong warrior, and when he realizes that, Sokka's character development begins.
Jim x Claire (Trollhunters) Also teenage romance. It's so well done and let's Claire be powerful despite Jim being the MC. And what's great is that they have ups and downs. They argue. It's a believable relationship.
Steve x Aja (Trollhunters) Same as Jim and Claire honestly. Except Steve, despite being a jock, almost acts like the "female" in their relationship. The show took that a step further and... as weird as it is... made him pregnant through weird alien stuff and it has scarred me for life.
Kappa x Siren (Castle Swimmer) it's wholesome ok. And it's perfect representation too! The boys just vibe together, and when they reunited, I'm sure that had everyone smiling.

Now for bad cannon ships in my opinion:
Peeta x Katniss (The Hunger Games) oh god. I hate Peeta so much because of this ship. He's so weak, yet somehow manipulated everything to his will. You could argue he did it to protect Katniss, but it obviously made her uncomfortable.
Adora x Catra (She Ra and the Princesses of Power) I love this ship, but I don't like the way it came out. Catra was awful to Adora throughout the series. And it just felt like Adora forgave her for that to easily. They both had a lot of angst with each other which never got resolved. The truth is, Catra was an asshole, and she didn't get redeemed. She never truly apologized to anyone except Adora which... isn't really a healthy balance.
Allura x Lance (Voltron Legendary Defender) I don't think anyone in the fandom shipped them. I couldn't get through the last season because of it. Never in the show did it look like Allura liked Lance. She was rude to him. She seemed to have attraction to other people such as Lotor and Shiro, but never Lance. And the whole date episode was a disaster from start to finish.
Katara x Aang (Avatar; tla) "I'm saying I'd rather kiss you than die! ThAtS a CoMpLiMeNt" ok it's great haha- Aang crushing on Katara was adorable but she seemed to much like a mother over him so it was really weird when it happened.
Uraraka x Midoriya (My Hero Academia) you can't just put a cinnamon roll with a cinnamon roll- it's not supposed to work. While it is cute, YOU CANT PUT A CINNAMON ROLL WITH A CINNAMON ROLL-
Mikasa x Eren (Attack on Titan) why is Mikasa only powerful when Eren is in danger but becomes useless for everything else?

Ships that should be cannon because the romance written between the characters was too good for them not to be cannon, in my opinion:
Entrapta x Hordak (SheRa) "Imperfection is beautiful! At least to me." Why would she say this to him- why- you can't tell me they're just friends because I refuse to hear it.
Kieth x Lance (Voltron) I have the whole fandom to back me up here.
Midoriya x Hospital bed (My hero Academia)

Non canon ships are ok but for your story, you want as many as your readers as possible to ship what's cannon. Voltron made the mistake of pairing Allura and Lance together, when a slim amount of their fans rioted for that. When it happened, the fans weren't happy. How do you avoid making that mistake?

-Avoid springing the romance in your reader so suddenly.
-Don't include it for the sake of representation only. (If it's a homo relationship)
-Don't throw it at your readers immediately.
-Add teasers for it.
"We had a bonding moment! I cradled you in my arms!" "Nope, don't remember it." -The whole reason Voltron fans ship Keith and Lance.
-Slow burn the heck out of it but don't wait till the end to make it happen.
-Make sure their relationship is healthy and stable, but not unrealistic. It's ok for characters to argue.

I don't have much more. Feel free to add to it or ask questions in the comments.

My friend ships two of my characters, Corvan and Rona, and dubbed their ship name "Corona". Put me out of my misery.
