42| A Blood Curling Scream

Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?

-Robin Williams

AN:

In case it wasn't clear in the previous chapter, Madhan had ordered the Quintet, the doubly alcoholic one and not the nonalcoholic one, which was Quinter. And I made those names up. So... :P

Chapter 42: A Blood Curling Scream

   Madhan didn't kiss her.

Madhan finally managed to put her back in the seat. She kept holding him tight, so he had to get out of the car and walk around. It was hard to balance her, making sure her head didn't hit the top. Her continuous nibbling on his ear didn't help at all.

He strapped her seatbelt and was startled when Riya kissed him on the cheek.

She giggled when Madhan patted her on the head.

It took another two minutes for him to close the door because Riya wouldn't just let his hand go.

Under normal circumstances, he would have been thrilled at a chance like this. But she was drunk. He and Armaan were going to have a long talk.

The ride back was quite dangerous.

Riya kept touching him inappropriately. Madhan had to shove her hand away when it got too inappropriate. Two near miss accidents happened and he had to park the car to calm himself down.

Getting her out of the car was a cakewalk. It was easy since he scooped her bridal style, and Riya clung onto him like it was her dear life. He locked the car doors, and trudged upstairs, gazing at Riya.

She was so beautiful. It was a terrific journey having got to know her. Five months ago, he couldn't have imagined he would be where he was. He was carrying a Riya who wanted to kiss him, and he was dodging her. A few months ago, it was the other way around.

Madhan unlocked the door and kicked the door open. He tried to drop Riya onto the sofa, but she wouldn't let go again. She was drawing circles on his bare chest. Somewhere during the ride she had managed to unbutton a few buttons.

With less difficulty, he locked the house door and walked to Riya's room. He winced when he looked around the room.

"Riya, let me go. I have OCD. I need to get out." There were clothes everywhere, and he couldn't stand it.

"Nope. If you're going, then take me with you."

Madhan yelled out of frustration. He was too tired, and not to mention horny. He wanted to take a nice warm shower and get to bed. Looks like Riya had no plans of letting him relax.

   "What do you want?"

"I told you," she pouted. "Kiss me."

"And if I do, you'll let go of me?"

   Riya nodded.

   Madhan kissed her left cheek.

"Hey, not fair," Riya pouted again.

Madhan chuckled. "A deal is a deal. Now, go sleep." He laid her down, and thankfully she had let go.

Madhan heaved a huge sigh and left the room as quickly as possible. He took a night dress and started to shower.

However, his shower was cut short when he heard someone wailing at his door. In frantic worry, he got dressed into his night clothes and opened the door.

Riya was on the floor, still in her Ghagra Choli. But she had tears rolling down her face. Madhan kneeled down.

   "Riya, sweetheart, what's wrong?"

"I miss my family," she sobbed. She crawled into his lap and sobbed in his chest.

Madhan stroked her hair. He was sitting in the bathroom, with Riya on his lap. "It's okay," he whispered. "I'm there." He kissed her forehead.

Riya's sobs reduced slowly, and once he surmised that she was feeling a little better, he lifted her up.

"Let's get you dressed into your night dress?"

Riya nodded and let Madhan guide her to her room. He managed to find a fresh pair of pajamas and asked her to take her dress off.

   "Turn around," she ordered.

Madhan laughed. That was a total change in mood. He waited patiently outside her door.

Once Riya got dressed, he tucked her in bed.

"Good night, darling," he said and kissed her forehead. He turned to leave, but Riya caught his hand.

"Madhan, I don't want to sleep alone tonight."

Madhan didn't know what to do. Should he listen to her? He knew he was going to get an earful the next morning because she wouldn't remember anything that happened tonight.

   "Riya, you'll regret this. No."

Riya's tears started pouring again. Madhan's heart ached. He didn't care if she would shout at him the next morning. There was no way he was going to let her sleep alone. He didn't want her to cry to sleep.

   "Okay, come."

Riya smiled gleefully and then whined. "Lift me," she said stubbornly.

Madhan smiled a tiny bit. He lifted her up bridal style and brought her to his bed.

"This wasn't what I had in mind for my first night with you," he mumbled.

Riya's eyes were closed, but she still heard him. "What did you have in mind?"

   "Not now, Riya."

Riya punched him on the shoulder, but she didn't let go of him when he laid her on the bed.

"I'm not going anywhere. Let me switch off the lights."

Riya hesitatingly lets him go, but Madhan came as quickly as possible. The moment he got onto the bed, Riya scrambled to him and hugged him tightly.

Madhan adjusted himself onto the bed and laid Riya on top of him. He covered her with the blanket and listened to her heart beats.

He had never felt so peaceful.

Right when she was about to sleep, Riya mumbled. "Madhan, you're making me confused. I don't know if I want to only be your friend anymore."

Madhan slept with a smile on his lips. When Riya was sure she wanted him, that was when he would kiss her.

Riya stirred in her sleep but squinted when she couldn't move freely. She felt as though someone was holding her. She tried tossing to the other side but something was wrapped around her waist tightly. She brought her hands to her waist to move it but was startled when she felt another hand.

   She opened her eyes.

Madhan woke up to a blood curling scream as he predicted.

"MADHAN, WHAT AM I DOING ON YOUR BED? OW OW OWWW," Riya shouted and brought her hands to massage her head.

She peeped into the bed covers, relieved that she was wearing her clothes. Thankfully, Madhan was dressed as well.

Madhan groggily looked at her. "What do you remember of last night?"

Riya racked her brains a bit. "I don't know. Leaving in the car with you back home? I think we went to some club. You did, I mean. Wait a minute. Does this mean I got drunk?"

When Madhan made no comment, Riya straddled him, wringing his neck.

"You are so irresponsible. That was not what I meant by surprising me!"

Madhan held her wrists, looking at her apologetically. "It was Armaan's fault. I asked him for a nonalcoholic drink and he recommended a strong one."

   "Tell me everything," she demanded.

"After breakfast," Madhan said, lifting her off of him. "What you need right now is a killer breakfast to cure that headache of yours."

Riya groaned. "Yeah, it does hurt a lot." Riya plopped back onto the bed as Madhan got up. She watched him while he freshened up. Why couldn't she remember anything?

   "Madhan?"

Madhan had taken his shirt off when she called him. "Yeah?" he asked, turning around to look at her.

   "Did I do anything embarrassing?"

"No," he said, answering a bit too quickly.

Riya narrowed her eyes at him. "Really? What's embarrassing for you?"

"Do you want me to say yes, Riya?" he asked, exasperatedly. If Riya didn't remember anything, there was no way he was going to tell her about it. He decided to lie and tell her about the romantic plan he had had and be truthful about the previous night.

Riya jumped off the bed in a jiffy, and punched him lightly in the stomach. "That was for showing me attitude when it was absolutely your fault," she said and stomped out of the room.

Since it was a Saturday morning, Madhan didn't need to rush to work. He planned to drop by at Armaan's for a quick word. But Riya had beat him to it.

"He gave you the Quintet, didn't he?" Armaan laughed, as Riya stormed inside.

Madhan was standing at the door, scowling. "Laugh all you want. I'm the one in trouble."

Armaan chuckled. "Can't say I didn't warn you, bro. I told you that Quintet was the doubly alcoholic one, and the Quinters is the nonalcoholic drink."

Madhan had no recollection of that. "You are lying," he accused. Armaan raised his eyebrow.

"Oh my god, I drank the whole bottle," Riya slapped a hand to her forehead.

Armaan whistled. "Wonder what the wild cat in her did," he said, looking at Madhan.

"You have no id-" Madhan started, but stopped when Riya looked at him, horrified.

"What did I do?" she whispered.

Madhan glared at Armaan, but looked at Riya and said gently, "After breakfast."

Riya zipped past him and whipped up some breakfast. It wasn't anything special. Just peanut butter and jelly sandwich, since she was dying to know what she did.

She slammed the plate on the table and demanded he tell her right that instant.

Madhan took a bite of his sandwich. "I had this really romantic surprise planned. We were supposed to go the fields, sit on a blanket, and gaze at the stars. But then you drank the whole bottle and slumped. When we reached home, you started crying. You wouldn't tell me why, just that you didn't want to be alone. So I let you sleep in my bed."

"Thank god. I thought I did something so mortifying," Riya grinned, showing her teeth.

Madhan didn't want to tell Riya about her missing her parents since he had a surprise in his sleeves for her.

Once they finished eating, Riya hit the books, while Madhan overlooked her studying session. He was sure she was ready to take up the certification any day next week.

Riya noticed Madhan gazing at her adoringly. It worried her. She didn't want to hurt Madhan, but she didn't love him. Yet. She loved him as a friend. The whole incident that happened the previous evening was all out of attraction and lust.

She was still in love with Aakash, and now the guilt was eating her up. Guilt, that six years of their relationship would have almost been nullified in a few months. It wasn't fair that she would move on, and he didn't. She had no idea what he was doing, how he was doing, whether he was happy, or really sad.

Riya started to tear up. Before she rushed to her room, she made Madhan understand their current status of their relationship.

"Whatever happened yesterday is to never be mentioned again, got it?" she said, her voice choking with emotion. "It meant absolutely nothing. I don't want to ruin the friendship we have right now."

She looked away as Madhan's face fell, ran to her room, locked the door, and slumped to the floor, distraught.

Madhan could hear her crying from the hall. What had he done? Everything was going so smoothly and perfectly.

An incoming message lit up his phone. It was a confirmation of the tickets he had booked. Riya's and his mom were coming to visit them. He had called Mrs. Sharma two days before.

"Madhan, how are you?" Mrs. Sharma said, gaily.

Madhan swallowed. He didn't know how to bring it up without making her worried.

"I'm good, Aunty. How's everyone at home?" he asked, politely.

After a little bit of small talk, she said, "Good good. I'll give it to uncle."

The phone made rounds to the entire family for another thirty minutes before it was handed back to Mrs. Sharma.

"It must be getting late for you, so I'll keep the phone down now," she said.

"No no! Riya needs you," he blurted out.

Mrs. Sharma paused. "She needs me? Why would she need me?"

"Aunty, can you come here for a few days? I'll book the tickets for you."

Was this his way of telling her that Riya was ...?

"Don't worry about the money. I can pay for it. Just tell me when you want me there."

"I insist that I pay for it. Please? It's the least I can do for Riya."

"Alright, if you say so then. Just let me know the dates."

Madhan had kept the phone down with a trace of a smile on his lips. What he didn't know was that the moment Mrs. Sharma kept her phone down, the news of Riya's pregnancy was being spread.

Ten minutes later, Madhan got another phone call. He was worried Mrs. Sharma was backing out but was relieved when it was his mom who had called.

"So, when were you going to tell me?"

"Tell you what?" Madhan asked, puzzled.

"Okay, if you're going to be like that, I'll play along. But book me a ticket. I'm coming home too."

Madhan was speechless. "But this is for Riya!" he exclaimed. What was there to tell her about that? He already knew Riya would be mad when she finds out that he told her mom. What would she think when she found out about his mom knowing as well?

"So what? Am I not like her mom too?"

Madhan groaned inwardly. This was going out of hands. "Okay," he said, sighing. "I'll book you tickets too."

"Ahh, that's my beta," she said, smiling through the phone. She exchanged some pleasantries with him and kept the phone.

The message had reminded that tickets were booked that night. They would be here two days from now. Their return flight was a week after that. His heart ached as he listened to Riya's sobs. Little did he know the real reason for them.
