Christmas Festivities

"I'm all unpacked." Marinette clapped her hands together to make herself known, "What did you want to do?" Thirty minutes after she'd left for her room, Marinette returned to the lounge, changed and ready to explore.

She'd swapped out her 'warm' clothes for 'extra warm' clothes in addition to her favourite winter boots ready to go sightseeing in the local town. She wasn't quite sure what Adrien had planned but she was excited all the same. The snow coating the area, plus the Christmas lights made her feel more festive than she had in years.

"Woah," Adrien turned around from where he was putting on his own winter warmers and looked down at her feet. "Why did you kill a muppet?"

Marinette followed his eyes down to her feet, and realised what he was talking about. How dare he insult her boots! The furry pink edge suited the pink leather that was modelled to make the shoe shape. They had tie up laces and Marinette had saved for months to be able to buy them, a Gucci special and her first big purchase. She was proud to say they were still in pristine condition.

"They're fashion, Adrien!"

"Fashion? What did poor 'Animal' ever do to you? He was my most favourite muppet, RIP oh crazy one!" He joined his hands together in his chest and looked down at the floor. "Gone," he sniffed, "but never forgotten."

Marinette started giggling, for such a random conversation she couldn't help but find it immensely funny. Adrien studied her and she couldn't help but grow a couple of inches taller from his look. Did that guy make everyone feel so important?

"Come on, Dupain-Cheng," he zipped up his jacket and placed his gloves on, "bring those foot muppets with you and let's go."

"Foot muppets?" She gasped in shock, "how dare you?" She laughed again, heading out the cabin and watching as Adrien locked the door behind them. He turned to face her and she could see the amusement dancing in his eyes. It was a wonderful sight to see, carefree and happy suited him well.

She instinctively wrapped her arms around herself, shielding what she could from the harsh breeze. Even with multiple layers, the cold air was sharp on her face and unshielded areas. She grabbed the earmuffs hung over her bag and slipped them on her ears. It couldn't be much warmer than freezing point.

"Are you going to be able to hear me with those on?" Adrien asked, looking at the fuzzy balls either side of Marinette's face. She smiled at the wild expression he was making. For an ex-fashion model, he wasn't exactly fashionable himself.

"Pardon?" Marinette said, unable to keep the smirk off her face. It was a proper old school dad joke and one her own papa had made numerous times in the past, but still it was something she found funny.

Adrien went to answer back and then realised the nature of her comment. His eyes glistened before he started to laugh again. She loved hearing him laugh, it was becoming one of her most desired sounds.

"You almost got me there. That's a c'old' joke."

"Aw, don't be too frosty about it," she dropped him a wink and made her way to the car, opening the door only for it to be slammed shut again. A long fingered, masculine hand above her own, pressed firmly on the window. She was sure that was going to leave a greasy mark.

"Please, allow me."

Marinette watched as Adrien moved his hand away and placed it on the handle, maneuvering himself to open the car door for Marinette.

"Well, aren't you just a gentleman?" She said, curtseying at Adrien before sliding into the car, already warm and cosy from many previous journey's that morning.

Feeling herself melt into the warmth of the seat, (were these heated?) she slipped her earmuffs and gloves off, placing them on her lap as she gave the car a once over. She hadn't seen the make before stepping in. She just noticed it was sleek black and very well polished. She guessed from the interior that it was more on the luxurious side. Maybe a BMW or a Mercedes.

Suddenly the door across from her swung open and Adrien slid inside, blowing on his hands and rubbing them together. Finally she took notice of what he was wearing. He'd changed from his usual expensive Gabriel clothing to something Marinette thought might be Zara or Hollister, and as attractive as he was in his 'work' clothing, when he was in his 'normal' civilian clothing he was glorious.

The thick bomber jacket was matched with black jeans, his beanie, along with a thick grey scarf tucked into his jacket collar and he'd opted for sunglasses. To be fair, she wished she'd packed her own. The sun reflecting off the white snow was dazzling and she had to be careful not to look at it directly.

As if sensing what Marinette wanted to know, Adrien filled her in.

"It's a Mercedes, but don't worry, all cars in this area are four drive instead of rear. We're pretty safe."

"That's good to know." A sudden array of nerves fluttered around her stomach. She'd spent quite a bit of time with Adrien recently but this felt substantial, like it meant more than just friends on an outing. It felt like a date.

But it wasn't a date, because Adrien wasn't interested in her that way and because she wasn't allowed to date. The order of the thoughts scared her. Why was she thinking about whether Adrien liked her or not first? It was her guardianship that was the issue. It didn't matter if Adrien liked her or not. It didn't matter at all.

Apart from, at that moment, it did.

It did matter if he liked her, and the thought was unsettling. She didn't know if she wanted him to like her for her own confidence and self esteem, or if she wanted him to like her because she liked him. But she couldn't like him? Could she? There were too many obstacles and too many obligations. It would never work out.

Marinette wouldn't deny Adrien had an effect on her. One she hadn't experienced since those first few months with Chat Noir. He was the only other one that sent her into a tiz like this, a tiz which could end up in the destruction of Paris.

She pulled out her phone and quickly sent a message to the group chat.

The Bug
All ok on the Parisian front?

She sat tapping her phone, waiting for Alya or, even, Luka to message back. She needed to know Paris is safe.

The Fox
All fine. No sign of Sir Fluffy.

Marinette covered her nose to suppress the snort. Sir Fluffy he'd get a kick out of that. She made a mental note to call him that when they were next on patrol.

"You ok?"

Marinette hid her phone on her lap as she turned to face Adrien.

"Yeah, all fine," her voice was breathy, like she'd just ran 10k. "My friend Alya, the girl from the expo, just told me a joke. It was pretty funny."

"Really?" Marinette watched Adrien's eyes twinkle, of course he'd be a guy who liked jokes. "What was it?"

"Oh - uh - are you sure you want to know? It's stupid, really."

Marinette began to dig around in her mind for a joke. She needed to think of one quickly as she was fairly sure Adrien wasn't going to let this go.

Oh God! Her mind was running to the ones Kim would tell, and there was no way she was telling Adrien Agreste an explicit joke.

"I don't mind. Go ahead."

Of course, you wouldn't mind, Marinette thought. He was staring at her intently waiting ... waiting for a joke which made her snort ... oh no, oh no ...

Without realising she told the first one that came into her head.

"What do you call a cat in the desert? Sandy Claws." She tried to hold a smile knowing full well she'd just told the worst joke in history. Even a cracker wouldn't get away with that as an inside joke. She knew that any respect Adrien had for her was about to be lost.

She watched as his eyes crinkled up, and a heart filled laugh sounded out in the car. Oh great he was laughing at her. Laughing at the girl who can't even tell a decent joke. He was laughing like a maniac, wiping under his eyes at the tears dripping down. Oh dear Lord, she'd broken him.

"I like that, that's funny. Tell Alya I'd like to hear more."

Marinette let out a fake little laugh before turning back to her phone. This time texting the friend in question, privately.

Marinette
I've just made an ass out myself in front of Adrien. If you ever meet him again please remember you like cat Christmas jokes. Don't ask any questions, just learn some!

"You like cat jokes then?" Adrien asked.

"They're paws-itively the best," Marinette replied as her phone signalled a reply from Alya.

Alya
Learn 'cat' jokes? M, what the hell?

Marinette pressed the button to close the screen, rapidly stuffing her phone into her bag alongside Tikki and turning her attention back to Adrien.

"So, where are we going?" She asked, trying to change the subject and calm down her embarrassment.

"There's this small town a few miles away, I found it when I came here a couple of years ago. It's really cute and Christmassy." Adrien looked like a toddler hyped up on sugar cookies.

"Sounds great," Marinette answered, not helping but to be caught up in the joy of her fellow passenger. Every moment with Adrien was a new experience of his character, he was so fun and full of life, nothing like she'd ever thought.

She'd always pictured Adrien as suave and manly, a gentleman, sure but with a slight arrogance around him. Someone who would treat you like a Queen, and to be fair she wasn't that far off. That was only half of him though, half of his personality. He was fun, and joyful, innocent and naive in the sweetest of ways. He was caring and kind, and could take a joke at his expense. He was so much more than the pretty face she believed him as, so much more than just a model.

"We're here."

At Adrien's words, Marinette looked out the window and gasped. It was similar to what she'd heard Praugue looks like around this time of year. Little chateaus and cabins all dressed up in their Christmas finest. Light's twinkling in the garlands wrapped around old fashioned lamp posts, Christmas trees in every spare orifice. The town was like a child on Christmas Eve, so full of life and waiting for the big day. She'd never seen anything more wonderful in her life.

"Oh, Adrien." The words came out as a gasp, her face glued to the car window.

"It's a good job the windows are blacked out, or the passers by would be getting a good view up your nose."

Marinette laughed, turning towards him and smacking him on the arm. He was right though, she was only millimetres away from a starfish stuck on the window, but she couldn't move away, she couldn't miss a thing. She turned back to the window, not baring the thought that she was missing something. Candy canes, garlands, lights, wreaths, perfection!

I want to come back here every year.

"Just say the word and I'll bring you," her head snapped to Adrien, watching the amusement dance around his eyes.

"I said that out loud didn't I?" she said, scrunching up her nose. How embarrassing.

"You did, but it's cute."

Cute! He called her cute! Her heart was swelling before quickly deflating. She can flirt but that's it. Nothing more. But that wasn't fair on him, butAdrien Agreste didn't date girls like her ... he dated famous 'wow' girls like Clara Nightingale, or Taylor Swift, or Ladybug ... Ladybug?

Her internal conversation had taken her attention so much that she'd missed the car stopping, Adrien vacating his side and opening the door out wide on her own. She gaped up at him and the hand he was offering to her. Attempting to get out of the car, Marinette moved forward only to be thrown back in her seat. Could this day get anymore embarrassing?

The wonderful sound of Adrien's laugh was suddenly joined by his wonderful smell as he leaned over her and disconnected the seatbelt.

"I think you might want to undo this?"

The clicking sound was joined with the fakest laugh Marinette had ever done. Oh my God! She looked up and noticed the giant that was driving them covering his mouth. It was obvious he was laughing.

Well, laugh it up big fella, she thought, I'm glad I could be your entertainment for the day.

She noticed Adrien had placed a hand out again for her, and this time, free from her protective strap, she took his hand and allowed him to pull her up.

"Thank y-" she misjudged the ice patches covering the pavement, her feet flying out in front of her as her butt beelined for the ground. There was only one thing to do, close her eyes and wait for the impact. She'd fallen before, she'd fall again, she was madly clumsy after all. It just so happened this time in front of Paris' number one sexiest male for the past five years.

"I've got you, Princess." He wrapped his arms around her waist, and saved her from living the day with a wet tush. Cradled in his arms, and way too close to his chest to be able to breath. Was he made of lead?

"Sorry, I'm so madly clumsy."

He attempted to recoil back in shock, forgetting he still had his arms around her and taking her with him. They hit the car door, Adrien quickly grabbing the roof with one hand, keeping the other around Marinette to steady themselves.

"I am so sorry." He said, his hot breath hitting her face. His breath was minty. Who can have such wonderful breath without chewing gum?

"You're amazing - I mean - that was amazing. Great catch."

"That you are," the words shocked her into movement, taking a couple of steps away from him and coughing as he scratched the back of his neck and closed the car door. "Um - we want to be going this way." He started walking to the right, only to stop and sharply turn in the opposite direction. "No sorry, left, yeah, left." He stormed off in front of her and she swore her face was hot enough to melt the surrounding ice.

Following him, Marinette struggled to keep up; he was walking like a man possessed.

"Adrien?" She called out. "Adrien?" She tried again but he still continued to march on. She was never going to catch up at this speed. Her clumsiness with the added issue of ice was not a winning combination. "Adrien?" Her voice was harsher this time and it did the job.

He stopped and turned around. "Yes?"

"I can't keep up with you," she answered, her arms waving around as she attempted to keep balance.

"Oh, sorry, I just got into my own head a little."

"I have no problems with that," she laughed, "but can you please do it at a reasonable speed. I look like a fan girl chasing after you." She continued to laugh as she made her way towards him.

"I wouldn't mind," he slapped himself in the forehead and turned around. She was quite sure he was whispering expletives to himself, rubbing his hand aggressively over his mouth. Before Marinette had a chance to ask him what was wrong, the blonde fencer turned back around, a smile plastered on his face.

"Ok, what did you want to do first? Hot chocolate or tree maze?"

"Tree maze?" Marinette queried.

"Yeah, a maze of Christmas trees. I've always wanted to do it but I'm quite sure if I went in alone I'd get lost."

She couldn't help but smile at that. He really was a kid at heart, just how much had this man missed out on in his childhood?

"What about the Gorilla?"

"Gorilla?"

"Yeah, your beefy bodyguard over there. Couldn't he have gone in with you?"

Adrien laughed. "Naa, he's more of an observer. Quiet but deadly."

"I better watch out then," Marinette joined in. "How about we get the hot chocolate to take into the maze?"

"Genius idea," Adrien placed one hand on the small of her back and led her over to the little kiosk near the tree maze. The woman serving the beverages and taking payment looked exactly as you'd expect Mrs Claus to. White hair tied back in the bun, red dress with white frills and a white holly embroidered apron.

Date four - Christmas Festivities

"Two for the maze, and two hot chocolates -"

"With all the trimmings."

Marinette interrupted Adrien's order much to the amusement of the lady at the kiosk. Adrien rolled his eyes at Marinette then turned back to 'Mrs Claus'.

"With all the trimmings," he repeated, turning to Marinette, "not like I need to keep my model body or anything?" He patted his incredibly flat stomach in jest and Marinette snickered behind her mittened hand.

"You're a strapping young man, a bit of cream and some marshmallows won't hurt you." The lady began to make the drinks while conversing with the two heroes. "You're a very lucky girl, though she's a stunner herself." She handed the drinks out to both the heroes. "Such a beautiful, young couple."

"Oh, no. We're just friends." Adrien said with a smile. Marinette felt like her stomach dropped, what was she expecting? A heartfelt declaration from a guy she'd known for a week or so. "But I have to agree. She is a stunner." Adrien dropped Marinette a wink as he paid 'Mrs Claus' and began to make his way towards the maze.

"Don't worry dear," Mrs Claus turned her attention to Marinette, pulling her out of her retrieve. "The way he looks at you, you'll be more than just a friend in no time."

Marinette smiled at the older lady unsure how she should respond. Instead, she said a quick thank you and headed off in the same direction as Adrien. In the direction of the Christmas Tree maze.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket and absentmindedly she pulled it out. Unsure who would be messaging her. Her parents knew she had arrived safely, and she'd spoken to Alya already.

When you get chance check out the link below ;)

Clicking on the link Marinette froze on the spot before looking around the area. There were pictures, many, many pictures of herself and Adrien. Pictures of them at the airport, on the plane, dancing in the resort's lobby, Adrien catching her when she slipped on the ice and most recently the two of them getting hot chocolate. Each picture had the same hashtag.
