Chapter 7

After Adrien left the arena, he raced to the village and grabbed a shield from the blacksmith shop, before heading to the local cheese vendor to pick up a wheel of camembert. He heard a rumour from an older viking that Cat Noir Furies liked to eat the stuff. After he got a wheel of the stinky cheese, he headed to the cove. Once he reached the hidden cove, he explored the area and found a lower entrance into the cove. Managing to find a small passage in the rocks of the cove walls, Adrien took a tentative few steps towards the opening as he held the shield in front of his body to protect himself. Adrien then walked towards the opening in the rock, stopping just two steps away from it before peeking from behind his shield. Seeing that the coast was clear, the boy threw the wheel of camembert out into the cove, waiting for something to happen as it landed on the ground a few feet away.

When nothing happened after a few seconds, Adrien decided to venture into the cove. Unfortunately for him, Adrien's shield got stuck in between the crawl space as he tried to enter the cove. After that, he tried to pull it back towards him, but it failed to budge. So he crawled underneath the shield and tried to pull it towards himself again, subsequently entering the cove, but still couldn't get it out. In the end, Adrien just gave up, walked up to where the camembert had landed, and picked up the cheese before hesitantly walking around to look for the dragon trapped in the hidden cove. But unknown to him, the Chat Noir Fury was watching him walk around from its perch on a raised rock near the entrance Adrien had used.

The dragon kept watching the boy, its tail moving side to side in anticipation, while Adrien continued to look around for the dragon. Having grown confident, the Chat Noir Fury rolled its shoulders while extending its wings out into the air as it raised itself to its feet, and growled to bring Adrien's attention to him. Adrien heard the growl and turned to his left to gasp in surprise as he watched the dragon climb down from its perch and crawl a few feet away from the raised rock. As Adrien kept turning his body to keep the dragon in his line of sight, the Chat Noir Fury settled in front of the boy, sniffing the air around them with a growl as a show of being unsure if it could trust Adrien. Scared for his life, Adrien held out the cheese to the dragon, hoping the dragon wouldn't see it as an act of aggression.

Tentatively, the dragon slowly came closer to him, sniffing the camembert and keeping its eyes on it as it softly growled, and made its way over to Adrien. But when it was about to take the cheese, the dragon glanced back at Adrien's waist and snarled at him before it recoiled from the boy. At the sight of the dragon's behaviour, Adrien retracted his arm and held the cheese with his left arm as he realised that it knew that he had his dagger on him. Deciding to test his theory, Adrien pulled back his vest to show the weapon to the dragon, causing it to softly growl at him. To further test his theory, Adrien tried to go for the knife and in response, the dragon snarled even louder at him and bunched up its body in response, causing the boy to back off a bit more. But to show he meant the dragon no harm, Adrien took the dagger from his belt and dropped it on the ground next to his foot.

Still hesitant to trust Adrien, the dragon snarled at him again and moved its head to the side to order Adrien to further get rid of the dagger. Knowing that he couldn't get closer until he earned the dragon's trust, Adrien used his foot to pick up the dagger and tossed it into the lake. Once the blade splashed into the water, the dragon calmed right down and sat down while staring at the boy with big eyes. When he was satisfied with the dragon's response, Adrien once again held out the cheese to the beast, allowing the dragon to tentatively come toward him. The dragon then creeped over, and once it was in front of Adrien's out-stretched arm, it opened its mouth and showed off its toothless mouth, much to Adrien's surprise.

"Huh, toothless." Adrien remarked out loud, confused as the dragon grew closer to the cheese in his palms

"I could have sworn you had..." the blonde continued, before his musings were interrupted by the dragon's teeth coming out of its gums, and quickly took the cheese out of Adrien's hand. Adrien gasped in surprise as the dragon gobbled down the cheese in two seconds flat. Once it finished the cheese, the Chat Noir Fury licked its chops while Adrien held his hands close to his chest, nervously staring at the dragon.

"...teeth." Adrien softly finished as he tried to corral his shock. But after the dragon finished licking its mouth clean, it came towards the boy and made Adrien back up away from it.

"Uh..." he tried to say as he backed away from the dragon, tripping over his left foot and falling to the ground, and continued to scoot away from the dragon as it got closer.

"No, no, no." Adrien spoke up, trying to get the dragon's attention away from him as he backed up into a rock behind him. Trapped between a literal rock and a hard place, the dragon reached Adrien and caused him to lean further into the rock as the dragon stopped a few inches away from him.

"I... I don't have any more!" the boy worriedly revealed as the dragon leaned in so close into his personal space, that he could smell his breath as it stared at the boy. But to Adrien's surprise, the dragon didn't attack him and instead regurgitated some of the camembert he ate onto Adrien's lap, much to his disgust.

"Ugh!" Adrien groaned as he looked down at the slimy cheese in his lap. The dragon then backed away from Adrien, and sat on his hind legs as it looked at the boy expectantly. Adrien just stared at the dragon in confusion and shock as he straightened up against the rock, the Chat Noir Fury merely continuing to stare at him instead of attacking him. Soon, it became a little awkward for the boy, still not believing that he is sitting right in front of supposedly the world's deadliest dragon. Taking a look back at the dragon as it continued looking at him expectantly, the dragon thankfully stopped staring at Adrien, and nodded his head at the camembert in Adrien's lap. That simple gesture made the boy realise that the Chat Noir Fury wanted him to eat the disgusting cheese. With a sigh, Adrien raised the cheese to his mouth.

"Uh..." the blonde began before he took a bite, letting it sit in his mouth after he did.

"Mmm!" Adrien exclaimed while his mouth was full of the foul-tasting camembert, much to the dragon's amusement as it softly growled with a curious tilt of its head.

"Mm-hmm." the boy said as he held the barely eaten cheese out to the dragon, a forced smile and watering eyes painted on his face. But unfortunately for Adrien, the dragon didn't make him stop there and mimicked a swallowing gesture, telling Adrien that he had to fully eat what he had in his mouth. Adrien moaned in exasperation and dropped the camembert to the ground. Realising that he had no choice, Adrien attempted to swallow the mouthful he had, retching in the process. Eventually, he fully swallowed it with a gulp and a shudder, making the dragon then slurp its tongue and smack its lips at the boy once he finished the cheese. Happy that his displeasure amused the Chat Noir Fury, Adrien smiled a toothy grin at the dragon. In response, the dragon tilted its head and soon smiled at Adrien without its retractable teeth and showing off its adorable toothless smile.

Seeing that as a sign of trust, Adrien got up from the ground, and reached out to the dragon. But when he was about to touch the dragon's nose, it immediately saw it as an act of aggression and extended its teeth as it snarled at the boy. In addition to snarling, the Chat Noir Fury ran away from Adrien and in the process, tried to fly to the other side of the cove with a growl. But it still couldn't fly properly, which led to it falling to the ground on the opposite end of the cove. The dragon soon found a spot on the ground near the tree roots that spilled into the cove from the forest, and spun along the ground as it used its fire to make a hot spot on the ground. After patting down the larger fire bits, it laid down and set its head down to the ground with a sigh of content.

A second after the dragon got comfy, a bird that was nesting in a tree above the dragon started chirping. It then flew away, making the Cat Noir Fury look up at it and follow the bird's flight direction, its ears raised in the air to listen. But when the dragon looked away, it was met with Adrien sitting cross-legged in front of the lake, a few feet away from the Chat Noir Fury. Seeing that he was discovered, Adrien smiled awkwardly at the dragon and waved at it, much to its annoyance as it lowered its ears and narrowed its eyes. Ignoring him, the Chat Noir Fury sleepily growled and used its wings and tail to wrap around himself to fall asleep. But Adrien then took the opportunity to scoot over closer to the dragon, his legs still crossed underneath him as he tried to get a better look at its tail. Once he was a foot away from the Chat Noir Fury, he leaned out to touch the dragon's tail. But just before his fingers can even graze over the tail, the dragon lifts its appendage to catch Adrien in the act. Knowing that he was caught, the boy walked away, pretending that trying to touch the dragon didn't happen. Meanwhile, the dragon tiredly got to its feet, and walked away from its spot.

A while later, the sun was beginning to set, and the dragon woke up from its nap as it hung upside down from a tree branch near its previous spot. As it moved its tail from resting in front of its face, wings wrapped around him like a blanket, the dragon looked around and spotted Adrien sitting on a rock near the lake. Meanwhile, Adrien was resting his head on his arm as it rested on his knee, while absentmindedly using a stick to draw the Chat Noir Fury in the dirt. He had just finished outlining the dragon, and was about to start drawing its head when he heard a purr next to him. Confused, he glanced to his right and was surprised that the dragon was sitting next to him. But he just continued drawing, seeing that the dragon seemed to like what he was doing and didn't want to scare it off again.

The Chat Noir Fury watched in captivation as Adrien drew the dragon's eyes, following the stick's strokes as it purred in wonder. But just when Adrien was about to start on the dragon's body, the dragon suddenly got an idea. It then walked away from Adrien in a series of thundering steps, catching the boy's attention from his drawing and directing it to the dragon. The Chat Noir then went to a tree, and snapped a branch off, before coming back over to Adrien and starting to draw too, using its mouth to hold onto the branch as it did so. Adrien could only stare at the dragon in confusion as it starts spinning and swirling around the boy sitting on a rock. The dragon seemed to be in a world of its own as it became invested in the lines and strokes it made, seemingly dancing as it drew, much to Adrien's wonder as he watched.

It was a little bit later when the Chat Noir Fury was finished with its 'drawing'. But once it was, it purred in satisfaction at his handy work... a maze made out of a single line, with different sized loops and large unoccupied areas. A confessed Adrien looked around at the 'art' the dragon had made and started to walk away to get a better look. As he did, he accidentally stepped on one of the groves in the ground that made up the line of the drawing in front of him. In response, the dragon snarled at him, making Adrien wince as he looked at the Chat Noir Fury, and took his foot from the line. Balancing on his left foot as the right one hovered in the air, the dragon responded to the action with a purr. Catching on to what the dragon had in mind, Adrien continued looking at the dragon as he put his foot back down onto the line, making the dragon snarl at him again. He then lifted it again, to which the dragon purred once more. To further test his theory, Adrien repeated the same action a few more times. Each time, the Chat Noir Fury responded the same way; foot on the line: angry, foot off the line: happy. With his theory proven, Adrien put his foot on the other side of the line in front of him, allowing the dragon to purr in satisfaction, much to Adrien's joy as he looked at the Chat Noir Fury with a smile. From there, he began to weave his way out of the maze the dragon had created. He avoided the lines and kept the dragon happy as it watched Adrien move through the maze, almost like a dance.

It wasn't long before Adrien made it out of the maze. But once he was, only then did he realise that his back was right in front of the Chat Noir Fury. He felt the dragon exhale onto him in order to catch his attention, causing Adrien to turn around to face the dragon as it loomed over him. The boy stepped back a little, and the Chat Noir Fury bowed his head at the boy, to which Adrien realised that the maze the dragon drew up... was a test. A test to see if it could trust him.

Taking the opportunity Adrien raised his hand toward the dragon. It then tilted its head to its bottom right, narrowing its eyes as it snarled in warning at him. Adrien pulled his hand back, causing the dragon to stop growling, which gave Adrien an idea. The boy looked away and closed his eyes, lowered his head and raised his hand in front of him again. The dragon tilted its head back to where it was before, and widened its eyes while looking at Adrien's outstretched hand as it hovered a few inches away from it. Unsure at first, the dragon edged its nose forward, and then finally rested its nose into Adrien's hand, its own eyes closed as well. As soon as the dragon's nose made contact with Adrien's hand... he expected to be eaten. But after a second, Adrien finally opened his eyes and stared at the dragon with surprise, which softened into a smile.

"I think you and I are going to be good friends. But you need a name." Adrien noted as the dragon leaned into his hand more. The boy pursed his lips as he thought about a good name for his new dragon friend, before he glanced at the neon green scales on its body and face. Immediately, his mind thought of his favourite legend. It told of a kwami that had the power over destruction, and was said to have been a co-creator of the Chat Noir Fury, along with Hel; the goddess of death. Seeing as he was touching said dragon, Adrien thought it was an appropriate name.

"How about I call you Plagg? After the kwami of destruction?" the blonde asked, to which the dragon, now named Plagg, purrs in response as it seemed to like the name. But Plagg pulled away from the boy's hand and ran away from Adrien, leaving him to process what had just happened.

Later that night, Adrien had arrived back in the village. But when he went to go get dinner, he was surprised to find himself with his class, plus Gorilla and Nathalie, as they sat around a fire pit on one of the catapult towers that were near the blacksmith stall. As the group was roasting their chicken; while Adrien had chosen a fish, they listened to a story from Gorilla as they ate their dinner.

"And with one twist, he took my hand, and swallowed it whole!" Gorilla regaled as he waved a large chicken that was speared by his fork hand attachment into the air. In response, the students listened with rapt attention, save for Adrien as he was caught up in his thoughts.

"I saw the look on his face... I was delicious." the blacksmith proclaimed as he pointed at the amazed students with his chicken hand, before lifting it back up into the air as he finished speaking.

"He must have passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one of them took his leg." Nathalie commented before Gorilla lifted his peg leg to show the students, who were in awe of their teacher.

"Isn't it weird to think your hand was inside a dragon?" Nino asked while he held a chicken leg in each hand, as he sat next to Alya and Max. But when Nino asked his question, Alya saw some merit to his question.

"Like your mind was still in control of it! You could have killed the dragon from the inside by crushing his heart or something." Alya pointed out as she continued to roast her chicken on a metal pole over the fire, while sitting on Marinette's right. At the resident nerds's remark, the rest of the group focused on Alya and Nino as they explained the idea.

"I swear, I am so angry right now." Kim growled out as he raised his chicken from the fire, seeming very invested in Gorilla's story, much to the other student's surprise.

"I will avenge your hand and your beautiful foot." the muscle head announced as he glanced over at his teacher, before turning back to the other students.

"I will chop off the legs of every dragon I fight, with my face." Kim proclaimed as he swung his roasting pole at the other students, his chicken still on it as he pointed to his face. But as Gorilla bit into his chicken, Nathalie shook her head at the boy and glanced at the students.

"No. It's the wings and the tails you really want." Nathalie revealed as Gorilla swallowed his mouth full, using the opportunity for a valuable lesson. Once she finished, Gorilla pulled a wing from his chicken, and raised it in the air as an example for the students.

"She's right. If it can't fly, it can't get away." Gorilla agreed as he looked around the group, waving the chicken wing in front of them.

"A downed dragon, is a dead dragon." Nathalie recited, bringing Adrien out of his thoughts and realised the devastating truth in his teacher's statement. But while he was in his musings, the other students soaked up the lesson like sponges before Gorilla stretched out his arms as he yawned.

"Alright, I'm off to bed." Gorilla announced as he got to his feet, Nathalie following in suit.

"I am as well. And you all should be too." Nathalie said as she pointed at the students, while Gorilla finished off his chicken.

"Tomorrow we get to the big boys." Gorilla announced after he swallowed his chicken. At his words, all of the student's interests were spiked, save for Adrien as they all forgo their dinners and leaned closer to their teachers in anticipation.

"Slowly, but surely, making our way up to the Hawkmoth Nightmare." Nathalie continued, the students listening to every word.

"But who will win the honour of killing it?" Gorilla rhetorically questioned before Luka put his rotating stick down against the fire pit, his nearly finished chicken still on it.

"It's going to be me." Luka proclaimed as he leaned back and put his arms up behind his head, smirking at the others in slight cockiness.

"It's my destiny. See?" the blue-haired twin continued, before he lifted his right sleeve to show off a cool looking mark, surprising Nino.

"(Gasp) Your mom let you get a tattoo?" Nino gasped in amazement.

"It's not a tattoo, it's a birthmark." Luka admitted, just as Marinette noticed that Adrien wasn't where he was sitting before, his smoking fish the only evidence that he was even there.

"Ok, I have been stuck with you since birth, and that was never there before." Juleka remarked, much to Luka's annoyance, while Marinette got up and went over to the stairs just in time to see Adrien going down to the village.

"Yes, it was. You've just never seen me from the left side until now." Luka argued, while Marinette concluded that Adrien was going home, and she rejoined the other kids.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A while later after the class had left the catapult, the fire extinguished and left the area pitch black... but the blacksmith shop was brightly lit. While everyone was asleep, Adrien was in the blacksmith shop's private back room where he would get to work on his inventions, and tonight was no exception. Thinking about what Gorilla and Nathalie had said earlier, he pulled out his notebook and placed it on his desk before opening it up to the drawing of the Chat Noir Fury. Once he had the drawing in front of him, Adrien grabbed a pencil and remade the drawing of the left tail fin. After he did, Adiren thought of a plan as he drew up the idea he had on a separate sheet of paper, until he was pleased with the end design.

Immediately he started up the forge, using the giant fire pump to heat the largest sword he could find so he could use the material for his invention. Once the metal was hot enough, Adrien broke up the blazing hot metal and used it to make up the components that he needed. Starting with a metal rod, the top part was flat with two holes on top of each other in the middle of it while the bottom half was rounded like a bolt; he hammered it to make sure it was just right. Once it was to Adrien's preferences, he blew on the rod to remove any metal shavings that could have attached themselves to the hot metal, and dunks it in the cooling bucket, making the metal sizzle as it cools down.

After the rod cooled down, Adrien put it on his table for later and then moved on to the next part. He then quickly took a broken shield and used a pair of tongs to pry off the bolts off of the shield, before he heated them up and used a detailing hammer to make them smaller. When those were done and cooled, Adrien grabbed a few ball bearings from a barrel, and weighed them for the perfect weight. Satisfied with their weight, Adrien placed the ball bearings into little holders and put them into the holes of the rod. He then used a wrench to tighten them, and started to connect the pieces of his invention together.

As soon as he connected the pieces of the skeleton to the invention, Adrien took out some dark grey cloth and placed it on the inventions skeleton. Sewing the fabric around the frame of the invention, Adrien began putting the finishing touches on it. Once it was done, Adrien raised it to his eye level and softly smiled at his invention... a new tail fin for Plagg. Quickly and quietly, the boy folded it up and hid it so Gorilla and Nathalie wouldn't find it. After that, Adrien went home, and crawled into bed, nervous of what would happen the very next day.
