Chapter 4

While the village was at the meeting, Adrien had made it past the mountain towering over the village, and to the rest of the island behind it, looking for the Chat Noir Fury. He had brought his journal with him to help his search, after he had drawn up a map of the island. It mainly displayed the village, but it also showed the point where Adrien had shot down the dragon and of the area of where it could have landed. But Adrien had been out in and near Raven Point for a while now, finding most of the areas in the dense forest he looked in to be unhelpful. After a while of searching, Adrien ghosted his charcoal pencil over an unsearched area on the map he drew, which just happened to be right where he was at the moment.

Hoping for the best, Adrien closed his eyes and took a deep breath, before looking up from his map and at the area he was in. But when he opened his eyes, he only saw the sloping area of land he was standing on top of and nothing out of the ordinary... once again. With a loud exhale, Adrien's shoulders slumped in disappointment before he turned to his left and walked away from the bowl-like area and drew another X on the map. It suddenly turned into scribbling out the map in frustration, before he placed his pencil into the book and closed it to put it away in his white vest. With a sigh as he started to walk down a gentle sloping hill with large boulders and lots of foliage on it that created lots of obstacles for Adrien to avoid.

"Oh, the gods hate me," Adrien vented as he continued walking down the hill.

"Some people lose their knife or their mug," He complained to himself as he climbed over a large boulder in his path. Kicking away some loose gravel on the top of the boulder, Adrien then stepped off of the obstacle and continued to walk down the hill until it levelled out a bit.

"No, not me. I managed to lose an ENTIRE DRAGON!" Adrien exclaimed, frustrated with himself as he continued to walk down the hill, before he saw a tree branch in his way. As Adrien kept walking, he swatted the branch out of his way, but it came back a second after and hit him on the right side of his face.

"OW!" the blonde shouted before clutching his right eye as it throbbed with pain. When the pain became bearable, Adrien looked up at the bush where the branch was attached, wondering where the branch had come from. But then he noticed the state of the tree next to it.The top part of the tree that sat next to the bush, was what housed the offending branch as it split away from the base of the tree, leaving the wood in sharp splinter-like points as it curved from the weight it was carrying.

Adrien stared at the destruction in shock as his gaze followed the direction of the tree top, and saw it was pointing to a large and deep groove in the ground leading in front of him and ended at the edge of the plateau he was on. The small trees going along the sides of it were missing their tops after being forcibly torn in half, and were turned into sharp points where the rest of the tree used to be. The boy hopped off of the small ledge that was hanging over the groove and started to walk towards where it ended. Along the way, he avoids rocks and roots that had been unearthed in the destruction before he glanced at the rut he already walked past as he tried to figure out what caused it.

After his glance over, he turned to face forward again as he neared the end of the rut at the edge of the plateau, where it curved up before it went over the edge and continued down below. Because of that, Adrien had to crawl up to the edge to continue his search, still looking around to see if there was any other evidence of what caused the destruction around him. But when he reached the top of the curve, he finally looked below the plateau and saw it... the Chat Noir Fury.

A second after he saw it, Adrien panicked and quickly ducked down to keep out of the dragon's sight, just in case it was feeling vengeful. After waiting for a few seconds and not being eaten, Adrien slowly creeped back up to the edge to peer over it and saw the dragon, trapped in the bolas that Adrien shot it with and laying on the ground past two large boulders. Panicking even more, Adrien reached into his vest and grabbed his knife to hold it in front of him in defence as he tried to take soothing breaths to calm himself. Once he calmed down a bit, Adrien made his way towards the downed dragon laying on the ground, sliding down the slope past the plateau he was on and raced to hide behind one of the boulders in front of the dragon. Holding his knife in front of him like a sword, fear laced in his every move, Adrien creeped around the side of the boulder as he exhaled out of stress and finally made it to the front of the boulder.

Once he was past the boulder, he stared at the unmoving dragon. Its tail was curled up into its underside and held there by the rope of the bolas at its tail fins. Its left front leg was pressed into its stomach as the bolas wrapped around its body and ended up going around the joint of its left-wing, making it stick out in the air as it held the limb in place. Adrien was left in shock... he brought down a Chat Noir Fury.

"Oh, wow. I did it," Adrien uttered to himself in shock as he took a few steps towards the dragon, and stopped just in front of it.

"Ohh, I did it!" He exclaimed as excitement flooded his voice, taking a few more steps towards the dragon and crouching a bit in the process.

"This... This fixes everything!" Adrien proclaimed as he placed his left hand on the side of his head, thinking that he was dreaming.

"YES!" He shouted out, jumping up while punching his fist into the air in excitement.

"I have brought down this mighty beast." Adrien bragged out loud as he walked towards the seemingly dead dragon and placed his foot onto the dragon. But a second after he did so, the leg moved and pushed Adrien's foot off of itself with a groan. Taken aback, Adrien quickly back peddled into the boulder he had previously hidden behind, breathing heavily to calm himself from his shock. The dragon in front of him was still alive!

For a few seconds, Adrien didn't move from the boulder as he watched the dragon breathing deeply like it was asleep. Gaining a bit of confidence at the thought of the dragon sleeping, Adrien creeped towards it as he shakily held his knife out in front of him and looked down the dragon's body to see it softly struggling in the ropes of the bolas. Adrien continued analysing the body of the Chat Noir Fury, until he looked past the wing in front of him and saw its open electric green eyes staring at him. Shocked to see the dragon's eye staring at him, reflecting how much fear it was feeling at the moment, Adrien began to have second thoughts about killing it as he stared at the dragon's eye.

With his nerves flying all over the place, Adrien just turned his gaze away from it and pointed his knife at the dragon's chest. But the dragon released a soft guttural growl that pulled Adrien's attention away from his task, knife still pointed at the dragon's chest, and back at the dragon's unwavering stare. One look in the dragon's eye, Adrien could see that it was silently pleading to Adrien that he have mercy on it. Unfortunately, it didn't work fast enough as Adrien steeled his nerves with a calming inhale and exhale and gathered himself before turning back to the dragon's chest, determined to finish the job.

"I am going to kill you, dragon," Adrien admitted in a gravelly tone as he glanced back at the dragon's eye for a second, before turning back to its chest and adjusting his grip on the knife.

"Then I'll cut out your heart and take it to my father," He continued as he rolled his shoulders in anticipation as he started to breathe in and out to calm himself. In his anticipation, Adrien readjusted his grip on the knife again so that his right wrapped around the handle of the knife, with his left clasped on the pommel of it.

"I am a viking. I AM A VIKING!" Adrien exclaimed to the dragon as he quickly turned back to glance at the dragon, taking his left hand off of the top of his knife in the process. Unbeknownst to the dragon, Adrien only said that last bit more to himself than to the dragon, trying to push himself to go through with killing the beast. After he placed his left hand back on the pommel of the knife, and ready to plunge it into the defenceless dragon's chest, the dragon groaned in protest, making Adrien glance back at it for a second before turning back to his task.

Looking ahead of him, he took a deep breath and exhaled as he raised his knife above his head with his eyes shut tight, really to kill it. Before he could lower his knife however, Adrien risked one last glance at the dragon and then looked right into its eyes, immediately seeing the large amount of fear in the dragon's eyes. It silently begged the boy to not kill it, to which Adrien started to feel bad for the dragon, as he kept staring at it. But then he quickly looks away, trying to avoid the guilt he was feeling as he shut his eyes and turned his gaze away from the dragon. With a moan, the dragon put its head down and expected its fate.

Luckily for the dragon, as Adrien tried to make himself plunge the knife into the dragon's heart, he couldn't do it. With a sigh, he lowered his arms and dropped the knife before placing his hands on the top of his head, shaking his head in regret. His father was right... he wasn't a dragon killer. Adrien then dragged his arms back to his sides as he stared at the dragon again, looking at the dagger on the ground before he glanced back at the dragon wrapped in the bolas ropes in regret.

"I did this," the boy sighed in regret as he backed away from the dragon. He knew that he needed to do something as he looked at the defenceless dragon as it lay on its side, eyes still closed as it waited for its fate. Then Adrien looked at the ropes wrapped around its body and at the knife on the ground, the gears in his mind coming up with an idea. After going through it in his head, with a silent groan, Adrien immediately began to do something incredibly stupid.

With the idea in mind, Adrien went back to the dragon after picking up his knife and quickly started cutting the ropes, unaware that the dragon opened its eyes at the sound of the knife cutting through the ropes. The dragon glanced at Adrien as it felt the tension of the rope go slack, and waited until the last rope was cut before it lunged at him, its front right foot on Adrien's chest while he was pinned to the boulder he had hid behind earlier. Adrien started freaking out as the dragon looked him dead in the eye, prompting the boy to try and get away as the dragon continued glaring daggers at him. At the dragon's staring, Adrien stopped trying to get away and his eyes widened as he waited for what the dragon was going to do to him in its revenge.

After a few seconds of the dragon's stare down, it raised its head into the air causing Adrien to panic as he began to think he was about to die. But to his surprise, the dragon took its foot off of Adrien's chest, and roared a high pitch yet very deep roar into his face that pushed him to the ground at the amount of force from the roar, before it ran away and began flying into the forest. During its escape, the dragon kept roaring and knocked into a large pillar of stone and started to go down to the ground, seeming like it crashed in the process.

Meanwhile, Adrien was freaking out about his near-death experience as he leaned against the boulder behind him, clutching his heart while he dropped his knife. Breathing heavily, he regained his wits and grabbed his discarded knife as he got up to his feet, seeing the wailing dragon in the gaps of the tree line in front of him as it flew away. Still in shock, Adrien turned to go back to the village and started to walk away. But after two seconds, his knife slipped from his hand and then he fainted out of shock as the dragon's roars became fainter.

(Time Skip)

A couple of hours later, Adrien got up from his fainting spell and made his way home. To his surprise as he quietly opened the door, Gabriel was at the fireplace as his helmet rested on a table near him while he placed a new log into the flames. Once Adrien quietly closed the door behind him, he quickly and quietly snuck over to the stairs behind Gabriel and quickly crawled up them. But much to Adrien's disappointment, his hope that Gabriel wouldn't notice him as he was about to reach the top was dashed away when his dad acknowledged his presence.

"Adrien," Gabriel greeted, stopping Adrien in his tracks before he reached the last step of the stairs.

"Dad, uh..." Adrien began, still in his crawling position as he glanced at his father and slowly brought his right arm from the top of the steps. As he did so, Adrien instantly thought of telling his dad about what happened in the woods.

"...I need to talk to you, Dad," the boy admitted as he got up from his crouch and stood on one of the steps while Gabriel turned around from the fireplace to face his son.

"I need to speak with you too, son," Gabriel agreed as he clasped his hands together before both father and son took a deep breath and spoke.

"I've decided I don't want to fight dragons." "It's time you learn to fight dragons." Adrien and Gabriel both spoke at the same time, much to the confusion of the other after their conjoined confession.

"What?" they both exclaimed as they glanced at each other in confusion. Considering that they spoke at the same time, it meant that they didn't hear all that the other had to say.

"Uh, you go first," Gabriel offered, gesturing to Adrien as he started to climb back down the stairs.

"No, you go first," Adrien requested as he climbed to the bottom of the stairs, standing at the bottom step as Gabriel took the floor.

"Alright," Gabriel sighed before he exhaled, clasping his hands together again out of nerves as he prepared himself for what he was about to say.

"You get your wish. Dragon training... you start in the morning," the chief announced as placed his hands on his hips. But unfortunately for Adrien, that was the last thing he wanted to hear.

"Oh, man, I should have gone first. Uh..." Adrien panicked once he heard the mention of dragon training. He just learned that he couldn't do it at all! So now, he had to find a way out of this new predicament.

"...Cause, I was thinking, you know, we have a surplus of dragon fighting vikings," the boy fibbed as his hands moved around as he talked and tried to find a way out of this.

"But do we have enough bread-making vikings or small-home-repair vikings?" Adrien asked, trying to find another profession he could do that avoided killing dragons. But Gabriel didn't listen to him and pulled up a large axe that was sitting at the foot of the stairs.

"You'll need this," Gabriel declared as he dropped the heavy axe into Adrien's arms, with the blade of it landing on his left, much to his displeasure as he tried to talk to his dad.

"I don't want to fight dragons," Adrien nervously admitted as he faced his dad, holding the axe to his chest with both of his arms.

"Oh, come on. Yes, you do," Gabriel chuckled as he turned to face the fireplace again and walked towards a table full of food next to it. As he did, Adrien hopped off the foot of the stairs and walked onto the ground floor of the house as he still faced his dad.

"Rephrase. Dad, I can't kill dragons," Adrien repeated, desperate to get his dad to change his mind. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

"But you will kill dragons," Gabriel claimed as he turned to face his son to cement his words, only to turn back to the table of food.

"No, I'm really, very extra-sure that I won't," Adrien assured, still trying to convince his dad while the axe started to lean to the left which caused him to readjust his grip on it.

"It's time, Adrien," Gabriel said in a serious tone as he turned around fully to face his son.

"Can you not hear me?" Adrien asked in desperation, genuinely curious if his dad was deft to what he was saying, as Gabriel walked towards him.

"THIS IS SERIOUS, SON!" Gabriel exclaimed when he was at least a foot's distance away from Adrien. He then grabbed the axe from him and held it in front of Adrien.

"When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you," the chief began to explain, right before he gave it back to Adrien and continued with his lecture. Unfortunately for Adrien, his upper body strength was lacking which meant he couldn't hold the axe in the air like his dad had done and let it drop to the ground, much to Gabriel's slight displeasure.

"Which means you walk like us..." Gabriel listed as he grabbed the top of the axe Adrien was holding and brought it back up.

"You talk like us..." the chief continued as he grabbed Adrien's shoulders and straightened his stance while the boy kept holding the axe.

"You think like us," Gabriel finished as he pointed to his head with his pointer finger, and continued with his lecture.

"No more of... this," He ordered as he gestured to Adrien, much to his son's annoyance.

"You just gestured to all of me," Adrien groaned in annoyance at the mention of everyone thinking that he was everything a viking wasn't. Unfortunately, Gabriel didn't really care how he felt about the comment.

"Deal?" Gabriel asked, not leaving Adrien any other choice.

"This conversation is feeling very one-sided," Adrien remarked as he still tried to get out of this arrangement.

"DEAL?!" Gabriel asked much more forcefully than before. Adrien sighed in acceptance, realising that he didn't have a choice.

"Deal," Adrien agreed in displeasure, leaving Gabriel glad that he was going to go through with it. He then grabbed a basket that was filled with food that was leaning next to the table, and turned towards the door before facing Adrien again.

"Good. Train hard," Gabriel encouraged before he started to walk to the door and grabbed a sword on the way.

"I'll be back. Probably," He admitted as he strapped his sword to his belt, and then opened the door to leave for the search party for the Dragons Nest that was about to leave the docks.

"And I'll be here. Maybe," Adrien replied, still holding the axe in his hands as the door closed behind Gabriel and left Adrien alone in the house. Once he was sure he was alone, Adrien sighed and made his way to bed, worriedness filling his thoughts. After he made his way up the stairs, Adrien made his way to his bedroom at the end of a short hallway that was flanked by two other rooms, one was his dads and one was a guest room. He then walked to his room, opened the door and walked in.

His room was small yet cosy, with his bed a couple of feet away from the door and facing the other wall. His desk; full of unfinished invention projects and drawn-up plans for other ideas, also sat on the opposite side of the room. The final touch was a skylight on the roof that was blocked off by a wooden door, which could be opened by a crank next to his desk. When Adrien walked to his bed, he placed the axe his dad gave him against the end of it, took off his boots, and went to bed with one thought in his head.

"I am going to get killed in the morning," Adrien muttered to himself as he fell into a restless night sleep.
