Chapter 4

While the vikings in the village were at the meeting, Adrien made it past the mountain towering over the village, and to the rest of the island behind it, looking for the Cat Noir Fury. He had brought his journal with him as well, to help his search. He had drawn up a map of the island, mainly of the village, the point where Adrien shot down the dragon, and of the area of where it could have landed. But Adrien had been out in, and near Kwami Point for a while now, and most of the areas in the dense forest he looked in were unsuccessful. At the moment, Adrien ghosted his charcoal pencil over an area on the map he drew up that he hadn't searched yet; which was right where he was now; and hoped for the best as he closed his eyes; taking a deep breath; before looking up from his map. But when he opened his eyes, he only saw a sloping area of land he was standing on top of. With a loud exhale, Adrien's shoulders slumped forward and he turned to his left and walked away from the bowl-like area. Adrien drew another X on the map, but then it turned into scribbling out the map in frustration. He placed his pencil into the book, closed it and put it away in his white vest with a sigh as he starts to walk down a gently sloping hill with large boulders and lots of foliage on it, creating lots of obstacles.

"Oh, the gods hate me," Adrien said as he continues walking down the hill.

"Some people lose their knife or their mug." He said to himself as he climbed over a large boulder in his path, and kicked away some loose gravel on the top of it before stepping off of it and continuing to walk down the hill till it levelled out a bit.

"No, not me. I managed to lose an ENTIRE DRAGON." Adrien said, frustrated with himself. He continues to walk, before seeing a tree branch in his way. As Adrien continues walking, he swats the branch out of his way, but it came back a second after and hits him on the right side of his face.

"OW!" Adrien cries out in pain, clutching his right eye as it throbbed with pain. When the pain became a little bearable, Adrien looks up at the bush where the branch was attached, wondering where the branch had come from, when he noticed the state of the tree next to it. The top part of the tree next to the bush housing the offending branch was spilt away from the base of the tree, the wood in sharp splinter-like points as it was curving from the weight it was carrying. Adrien stares at in shock as he followed the direction of the top of the tree, and saw it was pointing to a large, deep groove in the ground leading in front of him; while he stood right at the start of it; and ended at the edge of the end of the plateau he was on, with small trees going along the sides of it; all of which were missing their tops, being forcibly torn in half with sharp points the top of where the rest of the tree used to be. Adrien hops off of the small ledge hanging over the groove and starts to walk towards where it ended. Along the way, he avoids rocks, and roots that had been unearthed and glances at the rut behind him as he walked, trying to assume what caused it. After his glance over, he turned to face forward again as he neared the end of the rut at the edge of the plateau. The rut curved up then went over the edge before the plateau going down below, so Adrien had to crawl up it to continue his search as he looked around to see if there was any other evidence of what caused the destruction around him. But when he reaches the top of the curve he finally looked below the plateau and saw it... The Cat Noir Fury. A second after he sees it, Adrien panics, and quickly ducks down, out of the dragon's sight, in case it saw him. After waiting for a few seconds; and not being eaten; Adrien slowly creeps back to peer over the edge, and sees the dragons; trapped in the bolas that Adrien shot it with; laying on the ground past two large boulders. Panicking, Adrien reached into his vest and grabbed his knife; holding it in front of him as he tries to take soothing breaths to calm himself. Once he calms down a bit, Adrien made his way towards the dragon on the ground. He slides down the slope past the plateau he was previously on, and races to hide behind one of the boulders in front of the dragon, holding his knife like a sword in front of him; fear laced in his every move. Adrien creeps around the side of the boulder; exhaling out of stress, and finally made it to the front of the bolder. Once he was past the boulder, he stares at the unmoving dragon; with its tail curled at the middle, and held by the rope of the bolas at its tail fins, its left front leg pressed into its stomach, with the bolas wrapped around its body, around and at the joint of its left-wing; making it stick out in the air; and holding it in place; in shock... He brought down a Cat Noir Fury

"Oh, wow. I did it." Adrien said in shock as he took a few steps towards the dragon before stopping in front of it.

"Ohh, I did it!" He said; excitement flooding his voice as he took a few more steps towards the dragon, crouching a bit in the process.

"This... This fixes everything!" Adrien said as he placed his left hand on the side of his head, thinking that he was dreaming.

"YES!" He shouts out, jumping up into the air while punching his fist into the air in excitement.

"I have brought down this mighty beast." Adrien bragged to himself as he walked towards the seemingly dead dragon and placed his foot on the left front leg of the dragon. But a second after, the leg moved, pushing Adrien's foot off of it with a groan. Taken aback, Adrien quickly back peddles into the boulder he had previously hidden behind; heavily breathing to calm himself; shocked, that the dragon in front of him was still breathing. For a few seconds, Adrien doesn't move from the boulder as he watched the dragon breathe in and out deeply like it was asleep. Gaining a bit of confidence at the thought of the dragon sleeping, Adrien creeps towards it; shakily holding his knife out in front of him; looking down its body to see it softly struggling in the ropes of the bolas. Adrien continues looking down the body of the Cat Noir Fury when he looked past the wing and saw its electric green eyes staring at him. Adrien was shocked to see the dragon's eye staring at him, reflecting how much fear it was feeling at the moment. Even though he was having second thoughts as he stared at the dragon's eye, Adrien just turned his gaze away from it and points his knife at the dragon's chest. But the dragon released a soft guttural growl, pulling Adrien's attention away from his task; his knife still pointed at the dragon's chest; and back at the dragons unwavering stare, as it tries to get Adrien to have mercy on it. But while Adrien's nerves were even more shot, he inhaled and exhaled, gathering himself before turning back to the dragon's chest, determined to finish the job.

"I am going to kill you, dragon," Adrien said in a gravelly tone as he glanced back at the dragon's eye for a second, before turning back to its chest, adjusting his grip on his knife.

"Then I'll cut out your heart and take it to my father." He said as he rolled his shoulder in anticipation, while he readjusted his grip; his right wrapped around the handle of the knife, while his left was clasped on the pommel of it; as he started to breathe in and out to calm himself.

"I am a viking. I AM A VIKING!" Adrien said to the dragon as he quickly turned back to glance at the dragon; taking his left hand off of the top of his knife in the process. But he says the fact to himself rather than the dragon, trying to get himself to kill the dragon. Adrien quickly placed his hand back on the pommel of the knife and was prepared to kill the defenceless dragon. But the dragon groans in protest, making Adrien glance back at it for a second, before turning back to his task. Looking ahead of him, he takes a deep breath through pursed lips and exhales as he raised his knife above his head with his eyes shut tight, really to kill it. But before he lowered his knife from the air, Adrien risked one last glance at the dragon, and then looked into its eyes. Suddenly Adrien saw the large amount of fear in the dragon's eyes,  begging the boy to not kill it. Immediately, Adrien started to feel bad for the dragon, as he kept staring at it. But then he quickly looks away, trying to avoid the guilt he was feeling, and shut his eyes as he turned his gaze away from the dragon. With a moan, the dragon put its head down and expected its fate. But while Adrien tried to make himself plunge the knife into the dragon's heart, he couldn't do it. With a sigh, he lowered his arms, letting the knife rest on his head; pointing out in front of his head; and shakes his head in regret. His father was right... he wasn't a dragon killer. Adrien released the grip his left hand had on the knife and drags his arms back to his side as he continues to stare at the dragon. A second after, he looked at the dagger in his hand, and then back at the dragon wrapped in the bolas ropes in regret.

"I did this," Adrien said in regret as he back away from the dragon. He was about to leave, but then looked back at the defenceless dragon as it lay on its side, eyes still closed as it waited for its fate. Then Adrien looked at the ropes wrapped around its body, and with a groan, he thought of doing something incredibly stupid. With the idea in his head, Adrien went back to the dragon and quickly started cutting the ropes, unaware of the dragon opening his eyes at the sound of the knife cutting through the ropes. The dragon glanced at Adrien as it felt the tension of the rope go slack, and waited until the last rope was cut to lung at him, its front right foot on Adrien's chest while he was pinned to the boulder from before. Adrien started breathing heavily, freaking out as the dragon looked him dead in the eye, while Adrien tried to get away. The dragon continues to stare at him, while Adrien stops trying to get away, and his eyes widen as he waited for what the dragons as going to do. After a few seconds of the dragons staring down, it raised its head into the air, much to Adrien's panic, as he thought he was about to die. But to his surprise, the dragon took its foot off of Adrien's chest, and roared a high pitch yet very deep roar into his face; pushing him to the ground at the amount of force from the roar; and ran away, flying into the forest. But during its escape, the dragon kept roaring, and knocked into a large pillar of stone, started to go down to the ground, and seemed like it crashed in the process. Meanwhile, Adrien was freaking out about his near-death experience, leaning against the boulder behind him as he clutched his heart while he dropped his knife. Breathing heavily, he regained his wits, grabbed his discarded knife and got up to his feet to see the wailing dragon in the gaps of the tree line in front of him as it flew away. Still in shock, Adrien turned to go back to the village, and started to walk away, but after two seconds, his knife slipped from his hand and then he fainted out of shock as the dragon's roars got fainter.

A couple of hours later, after Adrien got up from his fainting spell, he made his way home. But to his surprise, when he quietly opens the door, Gabriel was at the fireplace; his helmet on a table near him; as he placed a new log into the flames. Once Adrien quietly closed the door behind him, as quickly and quietly as he could, he snuck over to the stairs behind Gabriel and quickly crawled up them. But much to Adrien's hope Gabriel wouldn't notice him, as he was about to reach the top, his dad had already acknowledged his presence.

"Adrien," Gabriel said, stopping Adrien before he reached the last step of the stairs.

"Dad, uh..." Adrien began, still in his crawling position as he glances at his father, slowly bringing his right arm from the top of the steps as he regretted telling his dad about what happened in the woods.

"...I need to talk to you, Dad," Adrien said as he got up from his crouch and stood on one of the steps while Gabriel turned around from the fireplace to face him,

"I need to speak with you, too, son," Gabriel said, his hands clasped together as he was about to say what he needed to. Both father and son took a deep breath and spoke.

"I've decided I don't want to fight dragons." "It's time you learn to fight dragons." Adrien and Gabriel both said at the same time, much to the confusion of the other.

"What?" they both said as they glanced at each other in confusion. But considering that they spoke at the same time, it meant that they didn't hear all that the other had to say.

"Uh, you go first," Gabriel said gesturing to Adrien as he starts to climb back down the stairs.

"No, you go first," Adrien said as he got to the bottom of the stairs and stood at the bottom step as Gabriel took the floor

"Alright," Gabriel said before he exhaled; and clasped his hands together again out of nerves; preparing himself for what he was about to say.

"You get your wish. Dragon training... you start in the morning." Gabriel said, as placed his hands on his hips. But unfortunately, that was the last thing Adrien wanted to hear

"Oh, man, I should have gone first. Uh..." Adrien said, panicking at the thought of training to kill dragons, which he couldn't do at all. He had to find a way out of this.

"...Cause, I was thinking, you know, we have a surplus of dragon fighting vikings," Adrien said, his hands moving around as he talked, and tried to get out of this.

"But do we have enough bread-making vikings or small-home-repair vikings?" Adrien asked, trying to find another profession he could do. But Gabriel doesn't listen to him and pulls up a large axe at the foot of the stairs.

"You'll need this," Gabriel said as he drops the heavy axe into Adrien's arms; the blade of it on his left; much to his displeasure as he tries to talk his dad out of this.

"I don't want to fight dragons," Adrien said, nervousness filling his voice as he faced his dad; holding the axe to his chest with both of his arms.

"Come on. Yes, you do." Gabriel said with a chuckle as he turned to face the fireplace again and walked towards a table full of food next to it, while Adrien hops off of the foot of the stairs, and onto the floor while he still faced his dad

"Rephrase. Dad, I can't kill dragons." Adrien said, desperate to get his dad to change his mind. But unfortunately, it doesn't work

"But you will kill dragons," Gabriel said as he turned to face his son to cement his claim before he turned back to the table of food.

"No, I'm really, very extra-sure that I won't," Adrien said, still trying to convince his dad while the axe starts to lean to the left before he readjusted his grip on it.

"It's time, Adrien," Gabriel said, turning around fully to face his son, his voice grave and serious.

"Can you not hear me?" Adrien desperately asked, genuinely curious if his dad was deft to what he was saying, as Gabriel walked towards him.

"THIS IS SERIOUS, SON!" Gabriel said when he was at least a foot's distance away from Adrien before he grabs the axe from him and holds in the air in front of Adrien

"When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you," Gabriel said, right before he gave it back to Adrien before he continues with his lecture. But unfortunately, Adrien's upper body strength was lacking and meant that he could barely hold the axe in the air like his dad had done, letting it go to the ground, much to Gabriel's slight displeasure.

"Which means you walk like us..." Gabriel said as he grabs the top of the axe Adrien was holding, bringing it back up into the air.

"You talk like us..." Gabriel continues as he grabs Adrien's shoulders and straightens his stance while Adrien continues to hold the axe.

"You think like us," Gabriel said as he point to his head with his left pointer finger before he continues with his lecture.

"No more of... this." He said as he gestured to Adrien, much to his son's annoyance.

"You just gestured to all of me," Adrien said, annoyed that he was once again, thought of as everything a viking wasn't. Unfortunately, Gabriel didn't really care how he felt about the comment.

"Deal?" Gabriel asked, not leaving Adrien any other choice.

"This conversation is feeling very one-sided," Adrien said, still trying to get out of this arrangement.

"DEAL?!" Gabriel asked, much more serious than before. Adrien sighs, realising that he didn't have a choice.

"Deal," Adrien said, much to his displeasure. But Gabriel was glad that he was going to go through with it, as he grabbed a basket that was filled with food, that was leaning next to the table he was facing before, turned towards the door and then faced Adrien again.

"Good. Train hard." Gabriel said right before he started to walk to the door, grabbing his helmet on the way.

"I'll be back. Probably." He said as he placed his helmet back onto his head, and then opened the door to leave for the search party for the Dragons Nest, that was about to leave the docks.

"And I'll be here. Maybe." Adrien said, still holding the axe in his hands, as the door closed behind Gabriel, leaving Adrien alone in the house. Once he was sure he was alone, Adrien sighs and made his way to bed, worry filling his head. After he made his way up the stairs, he made his way to his bedroom at the end of a short hallway and flanked by two other rooms, one was his dads, and one was a guest room. After walking to his room, he opens the door and walked in. His room a small, yet cosy, with his bed a couple of feet away from the door, facing the other wall, while a desk full of unfinished invention projects and drawn-up plans for other ideas was on the opposite side of the room. When Adrien walked in, he placed the axe his dad gave him against the end of his bed, took off his boots, and went to bed, with one thought in his head.

"I am going to get killed in the morning" Adrien muttered to himself as he fell into a restless night sleep
