Chapter 3
While Adrien was defying his father, the entire village population was in the Great Hall, all of them there to talk about a strategy to take down the dragon raids. The Great Hall itself was a large room carved out of the mountain peak that loomed over the village, with wooden columns; with thick metal bands wrapped around them at different heights of them; holding up the ceiling, the stone walls of the mountain, smoothed over and engraved with intricate dragon carvings; wooden benches and tables surrounding a large fire pit; with a thick stone rim; topped off with wooden planks to make up a tabletop; that took most of the space the fire pit took up; underneath a giant gold statue of a dragon being impaled by a sword through its chest, hanging underneath a large skylight; letting in natural light so the fire pit wasn't the only thing lighting up the space; that could be opened and closed at any time, while viking totems lined the pathway from the giant oak doors towards the fire pit, adding a foreboding feeling to those who walk past them. All of the villagers were surrounding the fire pit while Gabriel stood at the head of the round 'table' as he addressed the village.
"Either we finish them, or they'll finish us! It's the only way we will be rid of them." Gabriel said as he unrolls a map on the tabletop, and placed a dagger on the right side of it to hold it down. The map showed their island, as well as a fair amount of the ocean too, but at the top left corner of it had a group of clouds; right in front of a small island tucked in the corner of the map; with drawings of dragons on top of them. That represented the dragon's nest the raiding dragons resided in and the topic of the meeting that was currently taking place.
"If we find the nest and destroy it, the dragons will leave," Gabriel said as he grabbed the dagger on top of the map.
"They'll find another home!" he said, right before he plunged the dagger right into the table, sitting right in the middle of the clouds in front of the island where the nest is.
"One more search, before the ice sets in," Gabriel said as he let go of the dagger and looks around the hall at the other vikings there.
"Those ships never come back." A viking in the back of the hall said, feeling very cautious about what Gabriel was proposing.
"We're vikings. It's an occupational hazard." Gabriel said, trying to convince the others to join him on his search.
"Now who's with me?!" He said, asking the vikings in the hall who would join him. But nobody stepped up and muttered to themselves about being opposed to the idea. But then Gabriel decided to pull the strategy he always used to get them to change their minds
"All right. Those who stay will look after Adrien." Gabriel said slyly. Immediately everyone raised their hands in agreement with his plan, ready to join him
"Aye. That's more like it." Gabriel said to himself. After that matter was settled, everyone starts filing out of the Great Hall, leaving only Gorilla sitting on one of the wooden benches, drinking out of his tanker arm attachment, filled with ale. But after a swig, he wipes his mouth and turned to Gabriel
"Right. I'll pack my undies." Gorilla said as he stood up from his seat. But then Gabriel started to walk towards him.
"No, I need you to stay and train some new recruits," Gabriel said as Gorilla went to sit back down, quickly followed by Gabriel as he sat down on the bench, right next to him.
"Oh, perfect. And while I am busy, Adrien can cover the stall." Gorilla said as he turned to face Gabriel while the chief looked down at the floor as he spoke, while the other villagers walked out.
"Molten steel, razor-sharp blades, lots of time to himself. What could possibly go wrong?" Gorilla rhetorically asked Gabriel, while he turned back to take another swig of ale, as the doors to the Great Hall closed shut, with a loud thud, echoing through the large room. After the others had left Gabriel sighs in exhaustion.
"What am I going to do with him, Gorilla?" Gabriel groans out as he faced his friend. A second later, Gorilla swallowed the swig he took and turned back to face Gabriel while he stares at the floor, contemplating.
"Put him in training with the others," Gorilla said, answering his question. But that wasn't what Gabriel wanted to hear. At the mention of dragon training, he raises his head to face Gorilla and denies the idea right away.
"No, I am serious," Gabriel said, not wanting to have Adrien getting hurt during training.
"So am I," Gorilla said, trying to get Gabriel to allow it.
"He'd be killed before you let the first dragon out of its cage," Gabriel said, trying to think of a good reason to not let Adrien go through dragon training
"Oh, you don't know that," Gorilla said, dismissing Gabriel's excuse with a wave of his right arm, before turning back to his tanker
"I do know that, actually," Gabriel said, disagreeing with Gorilla, and stating a soft-spoken disagreement between the two of them.
"No, you don't," Gorilla said, arguing with Gabriel, while not taking his gaze from his ale
"No, actually, I do know that," Gabriel said, still disagreeing with Gorilla.
"No, you don't," Gorilla said, finally taking his gaze off of his ale and turning to face Gabriel, trying to get him to see reason. But it doesn't work.
"Listen, you know what he's like," Gabriel said as he got up from the bench and stands up.
"From the time he could crawl, he's been... different," Gabriel said as he starts to walk around the area where the bench is, while Gorilla turns back to his tanker, while still listening to Gabriel as he talked.
"He doesn't listen. He has the attention span of a sparrow." Said Gabriel as he reached the wall behind the bench Gorilla was sitting on. Meanwhile, Gorilla was taking another swig of ale, when a piece of metal; acting in the role of one of his front teeth; pops out of his gum line, and into his tanker. Right after it pops out, he poked to the empty area with his tongue, right before using his left eye to peek into the tanker to see if it fell into it.
"I take him fishing and he goes hunting for... for Kwami's!" Gabriel said, adding emphasis to the word 'Kwami's'.
"Kwami's exist!" Gorilla said; taking his focus from retrieving his metal tooth; and using his tanker to point at Gabriel while he turned to face him; adding emphasis to his claim.
"They steal your food," Gorilla said as he continues; pulling his tanker towards his chest.
"But only cookies and camembert. What's with that?" Gorilla continues, looking up at the ceiling, while wondering why Kwami's only stolen certain types of food, before turning back to lean his arm onto the benchtop to retrieve his tooth from the tanker
"When I was a boy..." Gabriel started, recollecting about his boyhood while leaning his hand against one of the pillars holding up the ceiling as he stares at the floor beneath him.
"Oh, here we go," Gorilla said, exasperated by the story Gabriel was about to tell for probably the millionth time, while he reaches into his tanker to try and get his tooth out, but fails on the account of his hand being too big.
"...my father told me to bang my head against a rock and I did it," Gabriel said, as he stopped leaning against the pillar, curled his hand into a fist and gently banged it against the pillar as he told his story, while Gorilla was still trying to get his tooth out by taking another swing of ale from the tanker.
"I thought it was crazy, but I didn't question him." Gabriel continues as he starts walking towards another wall near them. Meanwhile, Gorilla finally got his tooth out of the tanker by catching it in his mouth before pulling the tanker away from him. He then plucked it from his lips and held it between his fingers to inspect it for damage
"And do you know what happened?" Gabriel asked Gorilla, turning in his direction as he asked his friend.
"You got a headache," Gorilla said; even though he knew the answer from the previous times Gabriel told this story; while he looked up at the ceiling in exasperation.
"That rock split in two," Gabriel said as he walked behind Gorilla, walking past him, while the blacksmith; happy to see his tooth had no damage; placed his metal tooth back into its previous spot and used the bottom of his tanker to tap it in further into his gum line, and rolled his jaw a few times to make it settle in.
"It taught me what a viking could do, Gorilla," Gabriel said as he reached the wall he was walking towards and turns left to avoid it, but continues walking along the wall as he continues.
"He could crush mountains, level forests, tame seas," Gabriel said, turning to face Gorilla; as he was still sitting on the bench; excitement filling his voice. But it dulls down a bit, and he walked back to the bench Gorilla was sit on.
"Even as a boy, I knew what I was..." Gabriel said as he sat in the same place he had before he started his venting.
"...what I had to become." Gabriel continues, staring at the floor as he spoke
"Adrien is not that boy." He said as he turned to face Gorilla, while he was still looking at his tanker
"You can't stop him, Gabriel," Gorilla said, looking away from his tanker, and facing his friend.
"You can only prepare him." He continues while Gabriel sighed at the thought, and slightly turned to face Gorilla better.
"I know it seems hopeless," Gorilla said, trying to get Gabriel to see reason.
"But the truth is that you aren't always going to be around to protect him." The blacksmith said as he turned to face the chief, as he continues.
"He's going to get out there again." He said as he pointer his tanker in front of him to convey his point
"And he's probably out there now," Gorilla said; not knowing how right he was; while Gabriel finally made his decision.
