Stray

If Toothless isn't a dragon, he's a cat. So let's go;

--------------------

A 21 year old young man was just walking home as he heard a faint sound coming out of one of the many dark alleys around him. He stopped dead in his tracks as he heard it again, a little bit louder this time.

It sounded like a cat.

Strays weren't really uncommon in big cities like Berk, but that didn't mean that Hiccup Haddock's heart didn't ache every time he saw a poor stray out on the streets, with no place to go and no one to love. Especially in the cold winter months Hiccup would rather not be outside, especially not as a small cat or dog.

The cat made another noise, and before Hiccup could think about any possible consequences of his next actions, he slowly walked inside the dark alley, pushing aside some trashcans and cardboard boxes people left here. There were also a lot of bags with rubbish, which didn't fill the alley with a pleasant smell at all.

Hiccup hated big cities. Berk was a huge island, part of it was a huge city with an even bigger haven, and the other part was the province. Hiccup was born in a smaller village in the province, but he moved to Berk city for college, and hasn't moved back since, even though he was already done with college and was now working as an artist who mostly designed Dragons for video games or toy companies. He loved his job, it was his dream.

Back to the present, the auburn haired male made his way into the alley, following the sounds of the cat. When he was closest to them, he started looking around, trying to find the cat. He spotted it then, it was hiding in a cardboard box, all alone. Hiccup slowly crouched down, as to not scare it, and extended a shaky hand. It was below freezing in Berk, and it had just recently snowed again. Hiccup saw the cat was shaking a lot and as he took a closer look, he could see that it was still really small, probably just a few days or weeks old.

"Hey, buddy," the young man said shakily, moving a little closer to the small cat, which cringed further back into the box it was in, "I'm not gonna hurt you," he whispered, "I promise."

The cat looked at him with wide, green eyes and then slowly started sniffing his extended hand. It then started licking Hiccup's hand and the young man couldn't help but smile, "see? You can trust me, bud," he then slowly moved to carefully lift the small cat up in his arms, the cat not even fighting back against him. The small feline was shaking a lot, indicating that if Hiccup would've showed up a little bit later, it may have died.

The auburn haired male then cradled the small cat in his arms, trying to warm it. He stood like that for a few minutes, completely forgetting where he was and how cold he himself actually felt. "I have to get you to a vet," he whispered to the cat, and opened his jacket to put the small cat closer to his body, so it'd be warmer.

He made his way out of the alley and looked up the closest vet on his phone. It was already 5pm so it took a few minutes until he found one that was still open, when he found it he quickly jogged home and hopped into his car. 20 minutes later he arrived at the veterinarian and got in, taking a seat in the waiting area.

He looked around, noticing that he was the only one waiting, probably because the vet would close in about 10 minutes. The young man looked down at the cat inside his jacket, now warm, but still scared and probably also in pain.

It didn't take long until Hiccup got called into the office by a beautiful young woman, which looked around his age. He got up and followed her inside, carefully placing the cat on the table.

The young woman looked at him, "what happened to him?" She asked, petting the cat's small head. She looked at Hiccup with an expression filled with a little bit of hatred, probably assuming that Hiccup didn't treat the cat well.

"I..I uh, found him in an alley a few minutes ago," he explained, gesturing to the cat, "I heard him and....yeah."

The vet hummed and continued stroking the little cat's fur, the little cat yawned, showing that it didn't have any teeth yet. "Huh, toothless.." Hiccup murmured to himself, but the young woman next to him heard it.

"Yeah, he seems to be only a few days old," she said and started checking the cat's little paws for any injuries, "he's lucky you found him, he wouldn't have survived the night," the vet told him, feeling the cat's ribcage for any broken ribs.

The door then opened and another woman walked in. She kind of looked like an older version of the young vet currently checking on the cat, probably her mother. Hiccup then noticed the young blonde had a name tag on her shirt, the tag reading, 'Astrid Hofferson'. He looked at the older woman, she also had a name tag which read 'Doctor Hofferson'.

Doctor Hofferson went and grabbed some gloves, then stood next to her daughter and started checking the cat, "where'd you get him?" She asked Hiccup, not taking her eyes off the cat in front of her.

"He found him in an alley a few minutes ago," that was Astrid that replied, and the young man nodded yes. "He only seems to be a few days old, I'd say 3 or 4," the young blonde continued.

The doctor hummed, "can you prepare a bottle with milk, please?" She asked as her daughter nodded and went to make a bottle to feed the cat. "And you really found him in an alley?" The doctor was looking directly at Hiccup now, her grey-blue eyes boring into Hiccup's green ones.

The young man stuttered, "y-yeah, I was on my way home and I heard him.. why?"

"There's already been people that hurt their cats and then bring them to us, saying the found them on the streets and that they can't really take care of them because they're so 'busy', of course they only do that to get rid of their cats," the doctor explained, shaking her head.

Before Hiccup could reply, Astrid came back with a bottle filled with milk. Both women then fed the cat, Hiccup just standing there, feeling useless. The stray drank the milk within a few minutes, making the auburn haired male aware of the fact that he had no idea how to care for a little cat. He would have to learn how, though, since he was pretty sure he would have to take care of it from now on.

"I'll make an X-Ray to check for any other injuries real quick, Astrid, you can fill in the forms with this young man," the doctor said after a few minutes, she then carefully picked the cat up and carried it into another room, closing the door behind her.

Astrid walked over to the desk and gestured Hiccup to follow her, she sat down on the chair and told Hiccup to sit down on the chair opposite of hers, which he did. "Okay, so you'll have to tell me your full name first," she said, picking up a pen and a piece of paper.

"Uhm, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III," the young man said, scratching his neck. The young girl looked at him with a raised eyebrow, "I know, it's very weird."

She chuckled and started writing, "I've had worse, don't worry."

"Sorry, but I'm not buying it."

She looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with amusement, "your birthday?"

"29th February 1997."

"Which day do you celebrate your birthday when it isn't a leap year?" She asked, smiling at him.

Hiccup laughed, somehow he was on ease talking to her, "I prefer not celebrating at all," he said, "not much of a party person," he gestured to himself, smiling lopsidedly.

In that moment Astrid decided that she liked him already, "I'm not buying that," she told him, her bright blue eyes still sparkling with amusement.

The filled in the rest of the form together, until they were almost done a few minutes later, still waiting for Doctor Hofferson to return with the cat. "You'll keep the cat, right?" Astrid asked, looking directly into Hiccup's green eyes.

"I, uh, yeah I planned to," he replied.

"Okay, but taking care of a young cat like him is hard work and takes a lot of time, you'll have to feed him three times a day, clean up after him, and so on, can you spare enough time to do that?" The friendly and light tone of their conversation changed to something much more serious now.

Astrid Hofferson was really taking her job as a vet seriously.

Hiccup nodded, "I work from home so I'll be able to take care of him."

The blonde nodded, "okay, what do you want to name him?"

"Toothless."

Chuckling, Astrid wrote it down, "okay then, Toothless it is."

She smiled up at Hiccup when she was done, and before Hiccup could stop himself he said, "your name really suits you, by the way."

He really had to refrain himself from facepalming, as to not make him look even more stupid. Luckily, Astrid didn't seem to understand the compliment, "oh?" Was all she managed to say, before Doctor Hofferson emerged with Toothless in her arms.

Hiccup and Astrid both got up, "Astrid, you'll need to help me put his leg into a cast," she said, noticing Hiccup's concerned expression she added, "he has a broken leg, nothing too bad, don't worry."

The young man stood aside as both women worked around the cat - his cat - again. A few minutes later they were done, and Hiccup and Toothless were good to go.

The doctor gave him instructions, feed Toothless three times a day, one painkiller each day and so on. Hiccup smiled and politely thanked the Hofferson's for taking care of his new cat, he paid the bill and they made another appointment in a week.

They bid their goodbyes and Hiccup made his way to his car, Toothless in his arms. The small cat looked at him happily and Hiccup smiled down at him.

"I'll take care of you, bud, I promise."

Astrid and her mother were cleaning up inside the office after closing for the day, Astrid's mind still all over the good looking stranger who goes by Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. He was a nice young man, in her opinion. There had already been a lot of guys her age in their office, all of them had been trying to hit on Astrid, bragging about the cool dog or whatever.

Not Hiccup, he seemed to be a nice, kind and also an understanding guy. He also made her a compliment, one she didn't quite understand, if she's very honest.

"What's that dreamy smile on your face all about?" She heard her mother ask.

Astrid snapped out of her thoughts and looked at her mom, "nothing."

Ingrid Hofferson chuckled, "come on, I know you're thinking about that cute auburn haired man, am I right?" She asked, nudging her daughter with her elbow.

Damn it, how is it her mother always read her mind? "Yeah..." the younger Hofferson admitted, then a thought hit her. "Mom?"

"Hmm?"

"What does my name mean?"

Ingrid looked at her with a raised eyebrow, "Astrid? Astrid means divine beauty, my dear."

Divine beauty was the nicest compliment she's ever gotten and she didn't even know it until a few seconds ago. What she did know was that she was looking forward to see Hiccup again next week.

Crazy how a stray can bring people together.
