-------------------
They landed back on Berk in the very early morning hours, the sun still had to rise and the whole village was pretty much still asleep. The gang always went for raids late at night, it was way easier to rescue dragons in the cover of darkness. Their rescue missions usually lasted into the early morning hours, giving the gang enough time to catch some sleep before starting their work in the village.
They usually only went for raids once or twice a week, but this week it's already been 5 raids and everyone was exhausted from a lack of sleep. Especially Hiccup, given the fact that he wasn't able to sleep in after a raid. Rising with all the other villagers at dawn was something the Chief was expected to do, and Hiccup was no exception.
The dragons touched down on the ground, the rescued ones landing next to Toothless - the alpha. Hiccup jumped off Toothless and jerked the mask off of his face throwing it to the ground, stomping angrily over to Astrid.
"What were you thinking?" He almost yelled at her, as she jumped off of her dragon and took off her own mask, rolling her eyes.
"I was rescuing a dragon, Hiccup. Isn't that what we do on these raids!?" She said, turning to Hiccup and jabbing her finger into his chest - not that it hurt much, given the fact that Hiccup was wearing his armor.
Hiccup grabbed her hand and put it down, leaning close, "yes, but not like that! You could've gotten yourself killed!" He stepped back and glared at her.
Astrid huffed, "I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself! And Stormfly was there anyway, quit being overprotective!" She almost yelled back at him, turning around to distract her hands with the attachments of Stormfly's saddle.
The young chief exhaled sharply and turned around ,picking up his mask, "yeah, right..." and then he walked off, gesturing Toothless to follow him. The black dragon grumbled and followed his best friend, nudging Astrid gently on his way.
Astrid glared at the retreating figure of her boyfriend, unable to believe him. She was a warrior, perfectly able to take care of herself and not to get killed in a battle. She didn't need him to be all overprotective of her.
The other riders and Valka, who had watched the short but very heated argument, slowly started unsaddling their own dragons, no one daring to utter a word.
...
Astrid walked into the great hall, still angry about what happened earlier. She and Hiccup didn't talk all day, pretty much ignoring each other and busying themselves with work. She saw him sitting in the big chair - the one his father used to sit in until almost a year ago - talking to Gobber and Spitelout, while stroking his jaw.
The young blonde took her time and let her eyes linger on his shape a little bit longer. She still can't believe she's fell for him as hard as she did. She never thought the awkward, shy and clumsy Hiccup would transform into the young man she now knew. Sure, he was still awkward, shy and on occasion also very clumsy, but he also got more confident and definitely more handsome.
She looked away quickly when she saw him lift his gaze just slightly, walking over to the huge pot of steaming soup and taking a bowl, pouring some of it inside. Astrid got herself a spoon and made her way over to the other riders, who were all already eagerly eating their hot soup while talking about the events of the day. She sat down opposite of the twins and Snotlout between and next to Fishlegs and began to eat.
After a few minutes Astrid noticed that the conversation her friends were having had died down completely and she looked up, pausing what she was doing and raising a brow at her friends in confusion.
It was Tuffnut who cleared his throat after a few awkward seconds, "so.. uh.. there's still trouble in paradise, I suppose?"
The blonde warrior rolled her eyes, "what's that supposed to mean?" She said and took another mouthful of soup.
"Well, normally you, young lady, would be sitting with Chiefcup over there.. or he'd be sitting with us." Tuffnut explained, using his spoon to point at her and then over to Hiccup, who was still talking to Gobber and Spitelout and apparently now also his mother.
Astrid scoffed, "I don't know what you're talking about."
The others exchanged some looks, "I'm surprised actually," Ruffnut began, "when you two have a disagreement you normally make up by dinner, but here we are..."
"I honestly don't even want to talk to him or about him at the moment so could we drop this, please?"
"And why's that, young lady?"
Astrid drew in a sharp breath and let her spoon fall into the bowl, "because I'm still angry at him for treating me like a little girl! I don't need him to be all overprotective, I can take care of myself and I thought he'd know that by now."
She heard Ruffnut sigh and glared at her, "you don't get it, do you?"
"Get what?"
"Gods, woman, are you really that oblivious?"
Astrid's glare hardened, "well, I apparently am! Care to explain?"
Fishlegs then paused eating for the first time and turned to her, placing both his hands on the tabletop, fingers picking at the wooden table, "look Astrid," he began, "you almost got blasted by a dragon today.. right?"
The blonde woman nodded, "yeah, so? Stormfly was there to protect me anyway."
The husky man shook his head, "no, no, you're missing the point again!" He said, looking her in the eye.
Ruffnut let out a loud sigh when she saw her friend's confused expression. How can someone usually that smart be this stupid?
The female Thorston twin folded her hands in front of her face, "look Astrid," she said and started gesturing to her with her hands, "I don't need to remind you what happened the last time someone Hiccup loved was blasted by a dragon, do I?" She said and watched Astrid's mouth form into an 'O'.
It took Astrid a few seconds to realize what her friend actually meant. Of course, how could she have been so stupid?!
"Gods..."
...
Astrid walked through the quiet village, the sun had set by now and the only people outside were those who were on watch and her. She was on her way to Hiccup's house, since she hasn't talked to him yet and highly doubted that he would be the one to start a conversation this time.
Whenever they had a fight or a disagreement Hiccup would be the one to actually step forward first and talk to her about it, given the fact that he knew how stubborn Astrid was. But this time Astrid was aware of the fact that it should be her starting a conversation this time, since she was the one that overreacted greatly.
She walked past the closed down forge, but she saw some low light burning in the back of it, a clear sign that someone was in the small workshop and Astrid already knew who it was. She knocked at the door and opened it when she heard the slightly nasal voice of her boyfriend mutter 'come in'.
Hiccup looked up from his sketch when he saw her, a small smile lifting his lips, his tired looking forest green eyes lighting up a little bit at the sight of her.
"Oh, hey."
"Hey, whatcha doing?"
Astrid walked forward and perched on the edge of Hiccup's desk, curiously looking at his sketches, which she recognized to be the very first rough sketch of her armor. She frowned.
"Just uh.. trying to improve the armor, I guess," he replied, putting the charcoal pen down and running a hand through the auburn mess that was his hair.
Astrid's frown deepened, "how?" She asked, "I mean it's already thick leather coated with crushed Night Fury scales mixed with Night Fury saliva, not to forget it's covered in fireproof dragon scales!" She exclaimed loudly.
The young chief rubbed his eyes and picked up his pen again, "that doesn't mean there's no more room for improvement, does it?" He asked, his jaw set and brows drawn together. His voice sounded a little bit irritated to her ears, too.
The blonde scoffed, "Hiccup, if you keep adding more stuff the armor is gonna be so heavy that we won't even be able to move anymore!"
Hiccup drew in a deep breath, "no, it will not!"
"Oh yes it will!"
Something inside him snapped then, he was up on his feet, pushing the chair he was sat on back so abruptly it fell to the ground with a loud bang. His head was hung low, his hands resting on the tabletop and his breathing rapid.
It shocked her a bit.
After a few seconds Astrid sighed and turned away from him, "Hiccup we all know the risks when we go on these raids," she said calmly, it would be no use if she was to snap as well, "there's no armor in the world that can prevent death, you know that as well as I do!"
Hiccup's rapid breathing calmed down a little bit, but he still didn't move nor did he say anything. He just stood there, bent over his desk, weight on both his arms and eyes squeezed shut.
"Look I- I'm sorry for today alright? I didn't think my rescue maneuver through, I see that now," she took a deep breath and turned to look at him, "and I'm also sorry for snapping at you in the morning, we're all tired and exhausted and it's been a crazy week with all those raids..."
His breathing now calm, Hiccup turned his head to her and in his tired eyes Astrid could see unshed tears, "I-" he broke off and swallowed hard, his adam's apple bobbing visibly, "I can't lose anyone else, Astrid."
His voice sounded small and broken. Astrid jumped off her spot on the desk and placed a hand on his, "you won't."
Straightening up, he let out a dry humorless chuckle, looking down at their hands and turning his so they could intertwine their fingers. Her smaller hand fit into his perfectly as if the gods themselves always wanted them to be together. Hiccup felt Astrid's thumb draw small circles on the back of his hand, "I almost lost you today," he whispered so quietly Astrid almost missed it, "and I don't know if I would've been able to take it."
Letting go of his hand, the blonde wrapped her arms around him, holding him as close as possible and feeling him bury his head in the crook of her neck. Sobs shook him as they stood there in each other's embrace and neither wanted to let go of the other.
They've been through so much, have fought so many battles, faced so many enemies and through all of it they were there for each other.
"We've always looked out for each other, Hiccup," Astrid whispered, slightly pulling away to be able to look him into the eyes, wiping away his tears with her thumbs and leaning up to brush her lips against his, "and that won't change anytime soon."
And then she leaned up again, Hiccup meeting her halfway. Their lips met for the first time that day and everything around them was forgotten as the completely lost themselves in each other.
