(just to be safe)
Okay so after watching HTTYD3 6 times (and I cried every single one of them) I couldn't stop thinking about what happens between the wedding scene and the final scene where they all meet Toothless and the Light Fury and their kids.
I have to say I was kind of disappointed with the wedding because it was ?? too?? short?? but anyway, let's just pretend there was a huge party after Hiccstrid's kiss in the movie and they're all happy and whatever. So now, we saw that the wedding took place in winter? So my guess is at the beginning of December?
This one shot takes place the first Snoggletog the vikings spend without the dragons. Hiccup and Astrid are both almost 22 years old. Which means this takes place roughly three weeks after Hiccup and Astrid's wedding.
--------------------
The party wasn't as merry as it used to be, now that the Dragons left. Everyone knew it was for the better, given the fact that most humans just couldn't see how amazing those scaly creatures are. Of course, the Berkians had to pay the price, letting their Dragons go for them to disappear into the Hidden World and be safe until humans finally learned how to get along with them.
Music played and almost the whole village was gathered on the great plaza (think of it as the new great hall), Stoick's new statue looking over them. The villagers were sitting on benches, feasting on all sorts of foods and mead. Lots and lots of mead.. they were Vikings after all.
The mood wasn't as cheery as it should be, everyone noticed that, but there was nothing they could do about it.
Hiccup was sitting at the huge table at the front of the plaza, overlooking all the other people - his people, the very ones that followed him onto this crazy quest, abandoning their home of seven generations, trusting him to find a safe place where they could live with all their dragons in peace.
His hair was back into its crazy and windblown style and his brown chief cloak was resting on his shoulders. Next to him sat his wife, Astrid and his friends and mother. Astrid looked up from her plate to ghost him a smile, her white chieftess cloak also resting proudly on her shoulders. The young leader couldn't help but briefly smile back, still not quite believing that she actually agreed to marry him.
Their wedding was magical and so far the best day of his life. The only thing that would've made it better was if his best friend and father would have been there to witness it. Sadly, both were now gone and he may or may not only see one of them ever again, at least in the world of living.
Hiccup hoped his father was proud of the man he became. His father taught him valuable lessons throughout his life and in the past year, Hiccup came to appreciate them more and more.
'With love, comes loss son, it's part of the deal'
Those words rung around the auburn haired Viking's head in an almost endless loop.
How right he has been.
Hiccup looked down when he felt a warm hand ghost over his, turning his head to meet his wife's eyes, "you okay?"
Her voice was soft and quiet and sounded very concerned, something Hiccup rarely got to see from her. Hiccup smiled down at her lovingly and pressed a kiss to her temple.
"I'm alright," after a short pause he continued, "are you alright?"
That earned him a chuckle, and a playful punch to the shoulder, "yeah."
Hiccup raised an eyebrow, "are you sure? You've barely touched your food yet," he said and gestured to her plate.
The last few days Astrid had always felt bad in the morning. Hiccup was often woken up by her throwing up. The first time had been especially bad. Hiccup had to run downstairs half naked to get a bucket and run up again, just to arrive the moment Astrid threw up. Then he had to clean up the mess.
The next few days they had been prepared, having left the bucket by Astrid's bed side. Astrid insisted she was fine and throughout the day is seemed as if she was, it was only in the early morning hours where her body decided to throw everything she ate the day before back up again.
Hiccup wondered what it was? He had no idea.
As if to demonstrate that yes, she was indeed alright, Astrid took a mouthful of food and chewed on it, making the young chief chuckle, seeing her cheeks all puffed out like a small Hobgobbler.
An hour or so later, the party got a bit more intense. Some Vikings now drunk or at least tipsy from everything they drunk. But it was also time to hand out the gifts. Normally, Odin would be the one to deliver them, but it became kind of a tradition between the chiefly couple to give each other something before Snoggletog morning.
It was Hiccup who started it back when they were sixteen. He came walking towards her in the great hall that Snoggletog and handed her a small gift. The next year he did it again and she also had something for him in return.
Now, five years later they still did the same thing.
But this time, Astrid had a very special gift for him.
Hiccup turned to her and smiled, handing her a small box. Astrid gently took it and smiled back, opening it to reveal a bracelet with green and blue stones.
"They uhm.. kind of reminded me of your eyes," her husband murmured and pointed to the sapphires, giving her a shy smile. His green eyes - which looked like the emeralds in the bracelet - glowing in the low light of the torches around the great plaza. She noticed how his stubble was getting more and more the more weeks passed. Although the stubble was kind of scratchy when he kissed her, she still liked it. It made him look a little bit older and more mature.
"Did- did you make this one yourself?"
She received a shy nod as answer and smiled, lifting the bracelet and putting it around her wrist gently, "it's beautiful."
"Just like you."
That made the chieftess laugh a bit. She married this dork, she still couldn't believe it.
It was the right choice though, she loved him with all her heart and promised to always be there for him. He was the strongest person she knew, even though he was very keen on doubting himself and his abilities when he really shouldn't.
Astrid loved to think back to their wedding and also their wedding night. It always gave her this warm feeling inside her chest she couldn't quite describe. It was amazing.
Back to the present, it was now time for Astrid to hand Hiccup her gift. Well, she couldn't quite hand it to him, but she could tell him.
She took both of his hands into hers, "my gift for you this year is a little bit different than the last few," she began and smiled at him, ocean blue meeting forest green, "and it's going to take about 8 more months until it's finished..."
Astrid knew she was pregnant, having seen Gothi a few hours ago to confirm her suspicions. Hiccup seemed clueless, though, and even after the hint she just dropped, he still seemed to have no idea what she was talking about.
He smiled at her in his dorky manner, his slight tooth gap showing, "alright, I can wait."
The blonde looked at him with a bewildered expression for a second. He seriously didn't understand what she was hinting at. Alright then.
Hiccup leaned down and pressed a quick peck to her lips, then got up as some of his people called his name. Astrid watched him wander off and sit down next to Eret and Gobber, accepting a mug of mead and a heavy slap on the back.
--
About an hour later
"So.. what did Astrid get you for Snoggletog this year?" Asked Gobber and Hiccup looked up from his mug, which was still almost filled to the brim. He wasn't a great drinker.
The chief scratched his jaw, "well, she said it'll be finished in about 8 months so it has to be something big," he said and turned his head to look over to his wife.
Gobber snorted, "what?" he laughed, "you spent days in the forge to make that bracelet, travel hundreds of miles by boat across the ocean to get all those sparkling gems and she tells you to wait a few more months until her gift is finished?"
Hiccup looked back at Gobber and nodded, "yup, that sums it up," he said and took a small sip from his mead.
Eret raised an eyebrow, "what could possibly take that long to make?" He asked, his voice slightly slurred from the amount of mead he already drank.
"I don't know, maybe it's because she hasn't been feeling too well lately, and with everything that went wrong the past few months she might not have felt up to finishing it," the chief said and then it dawned on him.
Not feeling well in the morning? Takes about eight more months until it's finished?
His mouth formed into an O and he got up so abruptly that every eye on the table he sat at turned to him. Hiccup stumbled over the bench and clumsily made his way over to Astrid, who was currently standing in front of his father's statue, talking to her parents and his mother.
He walked up to her panting and gripped her shoulders, looking deep into her eyes. Their parents all raising their eyebrows at them confused at what he was suddenly doing.
"You-" Hiccup looked down at her and then back up into her eyes, "you're.. pregnant?"
There was a pause and Astrid smiled, "took you a while to figure that out, but, yes."
Astrid watched in amusement as her husband's mouth flew wide open, his green eyes suddenly shining with tears. "You-" he let out a laugh, "you're seriously pregnant?" He asked again, his eyes wandering down her body to rest on her belly and then back up to her eyes again.
"Yes."
And then she found herself being pulled into a tight hug, feeling his arms wrap around her waist and his whole body pressed tightly against hers. She wrapped her arms around his shape and buried her face in his shoulder.
They were going to be parents.
After a few minutes Hiccup pulled away and leaned down to kiss her passionately on the lips, "I can't believe it, I'm going to be a father!"
And then he turned around and announced it to the whole village. Everything fell quiet for a few seconds but then all Vikings erupted in cheers.
The evening went on with people congratulating them, telling them that everyone's so relieved to see that it didn't take them as long to have a child than it did to finally get married.
What the would-be parents noticed was how many people actually said that they can't wait for his arrival. As if they already knew their baby would be a boy..
A few hours later the party was over and everyone went back to their houses to get some rest.
Hiccup and Astrid parted panting, and Hiccup slumped down next his wife, his chest falling and rising with heavy breaths. He pulled the thick fur blanked over his and Astrid's naked bodies and felt her snuggle up close to him, leaning her head on his chest.
She chuckled, "what?" He asked confused, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and bringing her closer, their bodies pressed tightly against one another.
"It's kind of funny how everyone expects the baby to be a boy, don't you think?"
Hiccup looked up at the ceiling and chuckled too, scratching his jaw with his free hand, "well, they do have a point in thinking it's going to be a boy."
At Astrid's confused face he added, "every single Haddock's first born was a boy after all."
His wife drummed her fingers on his chest, "okay, true, but you've never been an ordinary Haddock so..."
Sitting up slightly in an offended manner, Hiccup looked down at his wife, "excuse me?"
Although Astrid could tell he wasn't seriously offended by the way his eyes were shining and his lips were turned upwards in that goofy smile of his, "I'm just saying..." she said and pushed him back down on his back, leaning over him a little, "that no Haddock has ever thought of actually training a dragon before, instead of killing it. No Haddock has ever thought about ending the war in another way than just killing all Dragons and destroy the Dragon's nest.
"No Haddock would've made the decisions you have, which makes you a non ordinary Haddock, and not just in my eyes, but pretty much everyone else's too." Trailing a finger down his chest and resting her hand on his stomach, she leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips, pulling away to smile at him.
"Yeah, you're right. But who knows, maybe I am an ordinary Haddock for once.."
He wasn't. Roughly eight months later their first child was born.
A girl, with the reddish-brown hair of her father and the ocean blue eyes of her mother.
They named her Zephyr, like the breeze from the west.
