Not Your Fault
"Hiccup Haddock, the mayors son, was found dead in his house."
This sentence still echoed in seventeen year old Astrid Hofferson's head. It's been four days since one of her close friends, Hiccup Haddock, has been found dead in his house and today was his funeral.
Astrid was dressed in a black skirt, black blouse and a black jacket, as she and her family were on their way to the cemetery, to honor Astrids dead friend.
Why did Hiccup die you ask? Well, Hiccup committed suicide. In an interview his father, the mayor, said, "Hiccup... Hiccup never showed any signs of depression or self harm. I... I just don't understand why, why he.... did this.." Stoick the Vast was heartbroken about his sons death. So were Astrid and her friends. Hiccup never showed any signs of depression to anyone, he always was this cheery dork and it seemed like he couldn't be happier.
But he obviously wasn't happy. He never told anyone about his depression, even Astrid who's always been there for him.
Astrid blamed herself, she thought she should have helped him, ask him if anything was wrong. But she didn't and she regretted it.
As Astrid and her family arrived at the cemetery, the others were already there. Snotlout, Fishlegs, Heather, Ruffnut and Tuffnut were all dressed in black clothes and walked slowly to the chapel, where they would say their last goodbyes to their friend.
Astrid walked over to them and was greeted with hugs and sad faces.
Heather, her best friend knew that she blamed herself for his death, "it wasn't your fault, Astrid, you know that." She said and placed a hand on her friends shoulder, "he wouldn't want you to blame yourself, believe me." Astrid just nodded in response and they continued walking to the chapel.
Stoick was already there and greeted Astrid with a huge hug, he knew his son and Astrid had been very close friends. She must feel the same pain as he did.
The ceremony was as sad as everyone expected and Astrid was happy when it was over. After the ceremony they went to the mayors house to talk about all the events that went on. Astrid didn't know what to do, there were so many memories that she didn't want to remember.
--
"Hiccup stop," a ten year old Astrid said while Hiccup was tickling her, she laughed, "please... stop!" Astrid said between her laughter, trying to push the auburn haired boy away from her.
"I didn't know you were ticklish, Astrid," he said as he stood up and laughed, Astrid got up too and punched the boys shoulder.
"Don't ever do that again, Haddock!"
--
Astrid felt a tear roll down her cheek as she tried to fight the memories.
The next day at school was rather happy, everyone was sad and it was quieter as usual on the hallways.
The students were all standing in front of Hiccups locker, placing letters and flowers down on the table that was placed in front of it. Astrids locker was next to Hiccup and another memory hit her...
--
"HICCUP WHAT IN THE NAME OF THOR ARE YOU DOING?!" A sixteen year old Astrid exclaimed, hand on her chest and breathing hard. Hiccup just scared her to death and she glared at the auburn haired boy who was laughing very hard.
"You.... you sh-should have seen your face," he said between his laughter and Astrid glared at him.
"Not funny, Hiccup," she said and raised her fist, but Hiccup held her fist before she could punch him and put it back down, trying to calm his friend down.
"I wanted to ask you something Astrid," he started and Astrid rose a brow in confusion, "you know, since I am pretty much a screw up and I won't be able to get a date for the prom," he said and trailed off, "wo-would you like to go to prom with me?" He asked and Astrid widened her eyes in surprise, but nodded afterwards.
Hiccup smiled widely and let go of her hand, "great!"
--
Astrid opened her locker and took the books she needed for her classes. As the bell rang, she ran to class and slumped down on her chair.
It was now lunch break and Astrid and her friends sat at their usual table. The seat next to Astrid wasn't occupied anymore, since it was Hiccup's. Astrid felt a stinging pain in her heart and opened her favorite book to distract herself.
As she opened it, a small letter fell out and Astrid got confused. She picked it up and read the words that were written on the envelope, 'To Astrid'. Astrid got curious and opened it, her heart skipped a beat once she saw a beautiful familiar handwriting. It was Hiccup's.
Astrid slowly started reading the letter...
Hey Astrid,
I don't really know what to say anymore except thank you. You've always been there for me, even if I said you don't need to. You've always been at my side and I really appreciate everything you've done for me M'lady. I am sorry for everything I've done wrong and I'm sorry for letting you down. I wish I could turn back time to undo my mistakes, but sadly I can't.
Let me just say I mean everything I say in this letter, everything I say about.
Astrid Hofferson, you are a beautiful, caring, amazing and talented young woman. Thank you for everything you have done for me, I love you. Please don't blame yourself for what happened, it's not your fault and it will never be, just
follow your dreams and your heart, and don't let anything take you down M'lady.
~Hiccup
Astrid didn't notice, but she started to cry. She pressed the letter against her chest not caring about her friends worried looks, "I love you too..." she whispered as more tears slowly ran down her face.
—————
I'm not crying, you are. :')
Well, sorry for this depressing chapter...
