Northern Lights

YUP IN A LEAP OF INSPIRATION I ACTUALLY FINISHED THIS! :D

So this takes place a few years after HTTYD 2. Meaning our boi Hiccup is chief, him and Astrid are married and have a daughter that is about 6 years old. Hiccup is 29 and Astrid about 28 in case you're wondering idk.

ALSO PLEASE MIND that I started writing this long before we had so much information about the third movie, so all of this won't line up with the third movie's story line at all!

--------------------------------

"Dad, wake up!" Hiccup woke to the sound of his daughter bouncing up and down on his and his wife's bed. The chief groaned as the girl kept jumping, trying to wake her father up. Hiccup's daughter, Luna, a 6 year old girl with blue eyes, which looked just like her mother's, and brown-blonde hair was staring at him with wide eyes.

Hiccup's been chief for 9 years now, he's been handling his responsibilities well, but it wouldn't be that way without his wife supporting him in everything he's done so far. Astrid has always been by his side during those past nine years and Hiccup couldn't be happier at the moment. It really was the most fulfilling feeling to see his daughter grow older every day.

Back to the present, Luna was still bouncing up on the bed and Hiccup slowly sat up.
"Why are you up?" He asked, while rubbing his tired eyes.

Hiccup yawned and stretched, his spine popping, which made his daughter laugh a little.
"Dad, get up! We're missing it!" She exclaimed, she then grabbed his hand and tried to drag him out of the bed.

Hiccup remained in bed though, a puzzled expression on his face, "miss what?" He asked confused, watching his daughter roll her eyes, he raised a brow.

"The northern lights, of course," she said loudly. Hiccup put a finger to his lips and shushed her, gesturing to Astrid who was still peacefully sleeping next to him. The girl ducked down and nodded, then continued whispering, "get up, dad!" The girl tried to drag him out of bed, but Hiccup resisted.

He couldn't just step out of bed now, he wasn't really wearing anything at the moment because he and his wife had some adult time together before going to sleep (THE CRINGE). They rarely got to do it the past few months, both busy with handling their responsibilities and being parents. It was nice though, being close to Astrid in another way again after so long.

Anyway, Hiccup shooed his daughter out of the room while he gathered his clothes from the ground. A few minutes later he was fully dressed and was just about to follow Luna outside, when someone grabbed his hand. He looked down to see Astrid awake, "where are you going?" She mumbled, rubbing her sleepy eyes.

Hiccup chuckled and kneeled down next to the bed, stroking his wife's hair lovingly. He tugged a strand of hair behind her ear, "your daughter wants to watch the northern lights with her old man, sorry if I woke you up" he said, smiling.

Astrid laughed and took his hand, pressing her soft lips to his knuckles, "I wouldn't really call you and old man just yet, babe..." she said, and leaned up to whisper in his ear, "...at least not after your incredible performance a few hours ago," she whispered, pulling back to smirk at him.

The chief blushed heavily, "we're almost 30 Astrid, don't you think we're a little too old for all this dirty talk?" He asked playfully, ducking down to capture the blonde's lips with his.

The woman hummed happily, then pulled back to rest her forehead against her husband's, "not yet, babe," she whispered seductively, brushing her lips against his again. Hiccup breathed out a laugh and opened his eyes to look at his wife, once again not able to believe that he was able to call her his wife and the mother of his child.

After his father died Hiccup got kind of quiet, trying to deal with his grief and trying to handle his new duties as chief all at once. The outcome wasn't really good, it left the young man depressed and sad. But only until Astrid started to talk to him about everything, making him comfortable to open up to her again. She took him on flights with Toothless and Stormfly to take his mind off things and it helped Hiccup a lot. It seemed to make him feel free again.

Hiccup's mother and Gobber took over the village when they were gone, and they were able to handle everything just fine, giving Hiccup the chance to spend some time with his betrothed and his dragon and to breathe freely again. Two years after Hiccup's father died, Hiccup and Astrid married. It was literally one of the best days of their lives, a day filled with family and happiness. And although Astrid knew Hiccup missed his father that day, he didn't let it get his good mood down.

Pretty much 9 months later their daughter was born, completing the Haddock family.. at least for now. The chiefly couple talked about having a second child, but for now both of them were happy with Luna. The girl was as stubborn, smart and creative as her father, and as strong, fierce and fearless as her mother. And if you couldn't tell by her personality that she was Hiccup's and Astrid's daughter, then you could certainly tell by her looks.

Luna was a slender built girl with eyes like her mothers, freckles scattered across her face and brown-blonde-ish hair, making her look exactly like the daughter of Hiccup and Astrid Hadddock.

Hiccup was so lost in thought - and in his wife's blue eyes - that he didn't notice Luna show up at the door again, tapping her foot impatiently on the ground. "Dad, come on! We're missing it!" She exclaimed, gesturing wildly with her small hands.

Yeah, she got that from her father too, the gesturing stuff.

Astrid chuckled, and looked up at her husband's eyes, "you should probably go."

"Yeah, probably," he replied, his voice sounding dreamy.

Luna huffed and walked into the room, grabbing her father's gloved hand, dragging him out of the room, "don't stay out too long!" Astrid called after them, hearing Hiccup reply with a distant 'yeah' before she heard the front door shut.
The blonde smiled to herself and closed her eyes, slowly drifting off to sleep again.

Hiccup and his daughter made their way up to their spot. It was about 15 minutes away from their house. You were able to overlook the whole village from it, since it was pretty high up. Hiccup and Toothless discovered this spot back when Hiccup was 15, they spent lots of time there together, and it was still one of the places Hiccup came to whenever he needed to think or when he needed a break from being chief. Only Astrid, his daughter and Toothless knew about this spot, and he planned to keep it that way.

They sat down on the ground, but not before Hiccup put down a blanket for them to sit on. It was winter after all and sitting on snow for a long time isn't really healthy.

Crazy to think that it's been almost 15 years since Hiccup's discovered this spot with his loyal dragon. Time went by faster than he ever wanted it to. He sighed and shifted a little, feeling his daughter crawl into his lap and snuggle close to his chest. The chief close his arms around her, and placed his head atop of hers and they both sat in silence while watching the beautiful and colorful lights dance across the dark night sky.

"Do you think grandpa is watching us right now?"

Hiccup exhaled, "yeah, I'm sure he is."

"Can you tell me about him?"

"Mhhh," he hummed, "what do you want to know?"

Hiccup has told his daughter about Stoick already, he knew she would've loved to get to know her grandfather as much as Hiccup would've loved to see his father's eyes light up when he tells him that he's gonna be a grandad. Sadly, Hiccup never got the chance to do so, and Luna never got the chance to meet her grandfather.

"Everything."

Hiccup chuckled, "well everything would take way too long and mom wants you to go back to sleep soon, but I can tell you about something your grandfather used to tell me back when I was young," he said. He's never told her about that before, he noticed.

Luna turned her head to look at him, a smile lifting her lips, "yes, please."

"Okay then, back when I was younger, grandpa used to tell me a lot about a Hidden World," he started, "it's supposed to be a safe place for all kinds of dragons and it's nothing more than a myth, but he believed it really existed and his dream was to seal it shut," he told her, closing his arms a little bit more around her, holding her closer to shield her from the cold winter air.

"Why did he want to seal it shut? I thought dragons are our friends," his daughter questioned and Hiccup smiled.

"Well, back when I was younger, dragons and Vikings were still at war and grandpa wanted nothing but to free his village from the dragons, it was his dream," he explained.

"But then you came and changed everything, right?"

"Yeah exactly, I befriended Toothless 15 years ago and grandpa saw that dragons aren't our enemies, but our friends and allies," Hiccup said, watching the northern lights dance across his vision. He found them fascinating to say the very least. They also reminded him of his first flight with Astrid. That flight was the beginning of their relationship, and if Hiccup would tell his 15 year old self that he would marry Astrid and have a daughter with her one day, he was sure he wouldn't believe himself.

Luna laughed, "and then you lost your leg!" She exclaimed, reaching down to touch Hiccup's prothesis.

Hiccup also laughed, "yeah, that too," he said. Then his smile faded a little, "you know Luna, one day you'll going to be leading this village, and I want you to know that whatever decisions you'll make, your mother and I will always be there to support you. If you want to discover the world before taking your role as leader, that's fine with me, as long as you're always careful and as long as you know that you belong here and that you have a family that will always support you," he said, feeling tears well up in his eyes.

Somehow, the thought of having to pass on the burden of being chief to his daughter made him feel bad. Hiccup knew how much work it was to keep a village running, and he also knew that it wasn't an easy task, especially when you're still young and want to go out to discover the unknown on your dragon. Sure, Hiccup himself had taken over the role of being chief because his father died way too soon, and he wasn't properly prepared, but that didn't change the fact that being chief was still a lot of hard work.

Hiccup may be chief, but he was also a caring and loving father and when Astrid told him she was pregnant he promised himself that he wouldn't let his child step into the world of being chief unprepared.

Luna snuggled closer, "yeah, I know," she said, "and I'm kind of looking forward to it, I mean, I love seeing you as chief because everyone trusts you and I want that too," she told him, "one day, I want to be just like you, dad."

That was enough for Hiccup to let a few tears slip, he himself has always been afraid of being like his father because he simply thought he couldn't be like him, he wasn't as brave and selfless as Stoick the Vast, but hearing that his daughter wanted to be just like him, wanted to lead the village after his example, made him feel so happy he couldn't even describe it.

"You will be so much more Luna, believe me," he said quietly, tightening his arms even more around her.

The two Haddocks sat like that for a few more minutes, until Hiccup noticed that Luna's breaths had become quiet and even. He looked down at her face and saw her fast asleep. Smiling to himself, he got up, picked up the blanket, wrapped Luna in it and carried her back home, careful not to slip down the steep climb. (Which wasn't that easy on a peg leg)

Back home, Hiccup placed his daughter in her bed, unwrapping the blanket and wrapping her in a proper one. He sat down at the edge of the bed and started stroking her hair. He really loved to see her asleep, she was so peaceful and it kind of reminded him of when he and the gang were still living on the Edge.

There were times when Astrid fell asleep in his arms and he loved to play with her soft, blonde hair. Luna's hair was as soft as Astrid's, if not softer, and he could spend hours of just stroking it.

After a few more minutes, Hiccup placed a soft kiss on his daughter's temple and got up, tucking Luna into bed one last time before leaving the room and walking over to his bedroom. He stripped out of his clothes and laid back down next to his wife, who instantly snuggled close to his chest, absorbing the warmth. Hiccup smiled to himself and put an arm securely around her shoulder, pulling her as close as possible.

He would do anything for his family, he loved them with all his heart and nothing could ever change that.
