Get To Know You

"Come on Hiccup, just talk to her!" I heard my cousin say, he was waving a hand annoyingly in front of my face, trying to gain my attention. I groaned and slammed his hand down on the table.

"No way," I said and took a sip from my coffee, "I can't just go and talk to her all of a sudden!" I exclaimed and slammed the cup back down on the table, hiding my face in my hands afterwards.

Fishlegs, who was sitting next to me, closed his book and rose a brow, "why not? Staring doesn't help you making progress with any girl," he explained and I rolled my eyes.

We were currently at Starbucks, having some coffee, talking about school and more important, girls. It was right after school so there were many students here, some were working on their laptops, others were taking selfies and some were just talking like normal people. One of those normal, just talking, girls was Astrid Hofferson. She was here with her friends, the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut and one of her other friends Heather.
Astrid's my crush since I first met her, which was in Kindergarten. Well met is kind of the wrong word, we never talked to each other for eighteen years. I mean we went to the same elementary school, middle school and high school, and we still haven't talked a word. It's pretty weird if you ask me. And I just don't have the courage to ask her to just drink a coffee with me or something like that. How can it be that hard to ask your crush to hang out after school?

"It's just," I started "what when I go to her, talk to her, and she doesn't even recognize me?" I asked my two friends who were both rolling their eyes.

Snotlout punched my shoulder, I was used to it and didn't really bother, "you're an idiot," he stated and I sighed, "you have a crush on her ever since Kindergarten, how can it be so hard to just go to her and ask her to hang out after school?" He said and I sighed again.

"I was asking myself the same question tho," I said and took another sip of my coffee. Fishlegs placed down his cup and looked at me, "come on Hiccup, just talk to her."

I sighed, "give me five more minutes guys, and I'll talk to her."

—Astrid—

I caught myself staring at an auburn haired boy with mesmerizing, green eyes. Hiccup Haddock, the mayors son and the only boy who stole my heart without even talking to me. It was weird, we never shared a word and I still love him. How is that even possible to fall in love with an almost stranger? I mean yeah, we go to the same school and have many classes together but we never talk. Heather, my best friend noticed me staring at Hiccup and smirked, she knew that I had a crush on him and kept telling me to just talk to him, but it wasn't that easy.

"Come on Astrid," she said and I looked at her, "it's not that hard, just stand up, walk over to him, tell him that you love him, and boom, you'll have a make out session with the boy of your dreams," she smirked and I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah as if," I groaned and took a sip of my coffee, the twins were arguing about tea at the moment and didn't really care about my conversation with Heather. Why are those two even my friends? "I can't just talk to him, that would be weird," I stated and it was Heather who groaned this time.

"Why not?" She asked and I shrugged. I didn't know why to be honest, I guess I just want him to make the first step. But I don't even know if he likes me back, ugh it's all just messed up. "You know what, I'll go talk to him for ya," Heather said firmly and got up walking towards Hiccups table before I could do anything. I watched her talk to him and hid my face in my hands once she pointed a finger at me while talking to Hiccup.

—Hiccup—

I was about to get up and walk to Astrid when Heather made her way towards us, "Hey," she greeted and I looked at her confused.

"Hey..?" I managed and she chuckled.

Heather placed a hand on our table, "do you see this blonde girl over there?" She asked and gestured to Astrid, I nodded dumbly. "I'm here because she doesn't have the courage to talk to you," she said and I nodded again, "you know, I might be stupid for asking you this but what do you think of her?"

My brain stopped working once she asked me this. What do I think of Astrid Hofferson? Well, I think she's an amazing and beautiful girl which is my crush for about eighteen years now. But I couldn't say that to Heather, she's one of Astrid's friends after all. So I just shrugged and Heather sighed.

"How about you go talk to her now?" I heard Snotlout say and I turned around to glare at him.

"Great idea," Heather and Fishlegs exclaimed at the same time and smiled at each other, which confused me since they have never spoken a word to each other either.

"Okay, okay," I said holding my hands up in defeat, "I'll talk to her," I got up from my seat and walked slowly towards the divine beauty figuring out what to say to her. Heather stayed at our table and watched me along with my cousin and Fishlegs.

Once I was at her table my heart sank to my boots, she then looked up and I felt like running away, but there was no turning back this time. "H-hey," I spoke up stuttering.

"Hey," came her reply and I felt like running away again, I totally must have lost it for considering talking to her, what was I thinking?!

"Sooo, do you m-maybe want to drink a coffee with me..?" I asked her warily, Gods above please help me now. She still has not answered my question, oh Thor.

—Astrid—

He was stuttering, oh Gods above he's even cuter when he's stuttering! And he just asked me if I want to drink a coffee with him, but the fact that made this whole conversation awkward was that Heather had to tell him to talk to me.

I nodded, "sure, why not," and Hiccup smiled widely, while sighing in relief.

"That's great," he said, "how about now but in another Starbucks because I don't want my friends to stare at us the whole time," he said, blushing a little bit and gesturing to his friends, I understood what he meant and nodded seeing Heather smirk at me. "Okay, I'll grab my bag real quick," he told me and walked back to his table to get his bag. I saw that Heather, Fishlegs and Snotlout talked to him, and then he came back with his blue back slung over his shoulder, "ready?" He asked me friendly and I nodded, following him outside.

"So.." I said trying to start a conversation with him and he looked at me and smiled, which made my heart melt. "We never really talked to each other," I said recalling that we had many classes together, without even saying a word to each other for years. Hiccup looked at me and nodded while we walked along the street.

"Yeah, I don't really know why tho. I mean we went to the same Kindergarten, Elementary school, Middle school and High school and have never really talked to each other," he chuckled and I smiled at him and nodded, "it was about time," he added silently and I laughed, punching his shoulder slightly. He didn't seem to bother since he continued his walk to the next Starbucks which was only about 300 meters away from the one we sat in before, since there are Starbucks' everywhere in big cities. We arrived at the Starbucks and Hiccup opened the door for me, I entered and was instantly greeted by the smell of coffee, cupcakes and bagels.

We made our way to one of the unoccupied benches and I sat down on it. Hiccup sat down opposite of me and we gazed into each others eyes for a moment, until he spoke up, "what do you want to drink?" He asked me and I shrugged, Hiccup chuckled, "you have to tell me," he said and fiddled his wallet out of his pocket.

I thought about it for a moment, "a small Iced Coffee please," I told him, Hiccup smiled and nodded, then got up to buy the coffee. He came back a few minutes later holding a coffee and a Frappuccino in his hands. He placed my coffee down in front of me and took his seat again. We smiled at each other and started talking about our lives and other stuff to get to know each other better. We talked about our parents and he told me that he lost his mother when he was 15, because of a horrible car crash.

"I still think it's my fault," he sighed and placed his drink down on the table, "I mean, I could have walked home that night, so she would not have to come to pick me up, but I was so selfish that I wanted her to pick me up, instead of walking those two kilometers," he said and I could feel my heart break at his words.

The accident happened in a cold berkien night, where Hiccup was at a friends place and called his mother to pick him up. Valka drove to Hiccups friends place and they drove back home, but on the way they crossed an intersection, their traffic light was green and nothing should have happened but a heavy truck that was way too fast for the icy road wasn't able to break anymore and crashed right into Hiccups and his mothers car.

"The only thing I can remember, was the impact and my mother screaming my name," he told her and a tear slid down his cheek, "the doctor said that she didn't feel any pain before dying, but I still miss her and I still feel guilty," he sighed again, "I barely survived the accident and my dad and I don't really get along well," he admitted and my heart broke even more, he sounded so pained and sad. "Sometimes, I wish I could have just died with her to escape my problems, it would have been better, for everyone," I was so shocked at what he said that I placed my hand slowly on his own, he looked up at me and I smiled at him.

"I'm glad you survived the accident," I told him and his lips lifted into a small smile, "otherwise we would never have talked to each other," I said and smiled at him, Hiccup just smiled back and we continued to talk about something less depressing. It got later by every topic we finished talking about and it was about 7 pm when he walked me home.
We stood in front of my house and I turned to him, "thanks for everything, I had a really nice day, Hiccup," he just smiled at me.

"Me too, it was nice to get to know you better M'lady," he said and I rose a brow at his nickname for me. A boy never called me any nicknames when we 'first' met and I would normally punch the guy who called me a nickname, but this was Hiccup, he was different from every other guy I ever met, so I just smiled and placed a brief kiss on his lips.

"I'll see you in school I guess," I smiled and he nodded dumbly, staring straight into my eyes, I laughed and opened the front door, vanishing inside. Once I closed the door behind me, I sighed and made my way to my room, this was one of the best days I had in a long time, and now that we actually talked to each other, who knows what will await us in the future?
