Crash
Once again a modern One-Shot
As always, some important information to begin with:
In this one-shot Hiccup is 18 and Astrid is 17. It's set in late Autumn.
Astrid's parents are very famous models/actors which is why Astrid's family is very wealthy.
Hiccup's an orphan. His mother died shortly after he was born and his father (who was also a famous person), died in an accident. Hiccup works a lot (every day after school) but still has almost no money.
He can't get his father's heritage (is that the word? idk lmao I mean like the money he left behind after he died) since something went wrong and they didn't give him access to it yet, which is why he has to work a lot to try to stay alive in the big city Berk.
He used to live in an orphanage but they threw him out when he turned 18. He also isn't popular at school or anything else, unlike Astrid, she's very popular.
I guess that's about everything (the rest will hopefully explain itself) so let's begin
(also I watched lots of motorcycle videos the past few days - mostly because I will get my license tomorrow - so this one-shot is inspired by those videos)
--------------------
It was 2pm on a beautiful Autumn day in Berk. Astrid Hofferson and her mother were in their car - a big SUV - on their way home. They were driving with about 110 kmh (or 68 mph). Ingrid Hofferson, a famous model and actress, was steering the car while some water got splashed on the car's windshield.
It had rained a little bit, which is why the road was wet and the car in front of the Hofferson car was whirling up some water.
Ingrid just picked her daughter, a beautiful, young woman, which looked almost exactly like her with blonde hair an beautiful blue eyes, from school and they now were on their way home.
Astrid had, thanks to her famous parents, a really good life. She had lots of friends - though you never knew how many of those actually were real friends, since a lot of them were probably just her friends because of her famous parents - but she still had 4 friends she's known since kindergarten friends Ingrid knew would always support her.
They were just normally driving on the highway, on the right, slower lane, when suddenly they heard a crash behind them. Ingrid instantly looked in her side mirror, seeing a motorcyclist fall from his bike and slide down the road. It seemed like he's been driving on the left, faster lane, and someone pushed him into the guardrail. The biker flew off of his bike, crashing hard down onto the road again. His bike got squeeze between a car and the guardrail, scratching the car, but not doing anymore damage than that. They have been able to hear the bikers scream through their closed windows.
Ingrid watched in shock as the biker just lay still in the middle of the road. Astrid also witnessed the whole scene and stared in shock at her mother. She then said, "mom, pull over, we have to help him!"
The blonde woman pulled over and got out of the car, her daughter doing the same. The car that caused the biker to crash was already gone, leaving the poor man and his motorcycle damaged, without even trying to offer help or anything else.
Ingrid and Astrid rushed over to the biker, who was still laying motionless on the ground. As they got closer they were able to see that his clothing - which seemed like leather motorcycle clothing - was completely ripped and damaged. His helmet had several scratches and his gloves were also ripped, blood slowly oozing out of a deep gash in his right hand.
Several other drivers had also stopped, trying to help too. Some of them were removing parts from the bikers motorcycle off the road, others were trying to handle the traffic.
Astrid kneeled down to the bikers right side, while her mother kneeled down on his left side.
"Sir, can you hear me?" She asked, but the biker only responded with a very pained groan.
He then moved his hand, trying to open the very scratched visor of his helmet. Astrid's mother told her to take care of him for a minute, while she called 911. Not knowing what to do, Astrid helped the biker to open the visor of his helmet.
After opening the visor, she found herself staring into beautiful and mesmerizing, but also very pained looking emerald green eyes. Astrid gasped, realizing who the young man in front of her was. She didn't know him well, but she would notice his eyes anywhere, since she's never seen eyes that shone as bright like his.
In front of her, pained, bruised and groaning, was no other than one of her classmates Hiccup Haddock.
Her hands flew to her mouth as she gasped. She's never seen an accident like this, and knowing that this young man in front of her was one of her classmates, and not just anyone she didn't know, made it worse.
What if the ambulance won't arrive in time? What if he dies here, right in front of her eyes?
After telling herself to stop panicking for several times, Astrid tried to talk to him.
"Hiccup?" She asked, as a reply she got a pained groan. Hiccup then tried to move, but Astrid slowly rested her hands on his shoulders, holding him down.
"Don't move, you're hurt."
Hiccup let his head drop back on the ground, letting out another groan.
Astrid's mother then kneeled back down next to her daughter, "police and ambulance are on their way," she said calmly. She then carefully took his left hand and slid off his glove, Astrid doing the same with his right hand.
"I memorized the car's license plate," a man that was standing beside them the whole time said, handing Ingrid his phone where he had typed the license plate out. Ingrid thanked him and copied the note on the phone so she could give the police the information they needed to catch the driver that endangered this bikers life.
They then were able to hear the sirens of the ambulance and police, but they were still very far away.
Astrid turned to her mother, "mom, I know him. He's one of my classmates," she informed her mother and Ingrid nodded.
Hiccup then moved again, trying to sit up. Astrid's mother looked at him, concern written all over her face. "Are you sure you can sit up like that?" She asked carefully, receiving another groan and a nod from the biker. She then helped him sit up.
The young biker then looked around, obviously searching for something. "W-what about my bike?" He asked, his voice sounding pained and rough, "is it okay?"
Astrid's jaw dropped at that question, was he seriously more concerned about his bike than about his own safety? Wow.
Ingrid shook her head, once Hiccup saw that, he just dropped back down again, now laying flat on his back again. Astrid saw a single tear slide down his cheek and a lot of questions started to fill her head then.
Why was he so concerned about his bike? Why was it so important to him?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the ambulance that pulled ob right beside them. Two people stormed out of the van and Astrid and her mother made way for them. Ingrid went to talk to the police that had also just arrived, while Astrid stayed by her classmate's side. Answering questions of the paramedics if necessary.
She watched as the paramedics carefully removed Hiccup's helmet, checked him for any injuries and asked him a few questions.
"Where does it hurt the most?" One of them asked, while the other carefully removed Hiccup's motorcycle gear, revealing a red sweatshirt underneath.
"My r-ribs."
The paramedic then carefully slid her fingers up his torso, feeling his ribs.
She looked at her colleague in concern, then back to the young man in front of her, "your ribs are broken, but only the ones on the left side," she said.
"That's where he hit the guardrail," Astrid confirmed, receiving a nod of acknowledgement from the paramedic.
Then a policeman walked over to them, kneeling down next to Hiccup too, "is there anyone we can call for you?" He asked gently.
Hiccup shook his head as response.
"Parents? Grandparents? Maybe a good friend? Anyone?" He asked again, but got the same answer, the policeman gave a nod of acknowledgement and left again, talking to Astrid's mother again.
The paramedics then started putting Hiccup into the ambulance. They then went to Astrid's mother asking her if she knew anything about Hiccup. Ingrid shook her head, "but my daughter knows him," she told them.
Astrid and Ingrid then gave the paramedics their personal information. Then they followed the ambulance to the hospital, since they were the only ones that knew Hiccup, they had to be there when he woke up again.
The two Hoffersons waited in the hospital's waiting area for two long hours.
"Are you here with Hiccup Haddock?" they both looked up at that question, seeing a man, obviously a doctor, standing right in front of them.
They both nodded, "well, the boy has suffered a few injuries, his left leg is broken, also some of his ribs, a light concussion and he has lots of bruises all over his body," the doctor said, listing Hiccup's injuries one by one.
Ingrid told Astrid to go see him while she sorted some things with the doctor out. Astrid went to Hiccup's room, carefully knocking at the door. She waited a bit and then entered the room, seeing Hiccup on the hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown. His left leg was in a cast an there were stitches on his right hand.
Hiccup was looking out of the window, seeming completely zoned out. Astrid walked into the room and stood at his bed. Hiccup noticed her and slowly turned his head towards her.
"Hey," the blonde girl greeted, unsure what else to say.
Hiccup chuckled, "hey, to what do I owe the pleasure?" He asked her, confusing Astrid a little bit. Maybe he didn't remember that she and her mother were the ones to help him when the accident happened? The doctor didn't say anything about memory loss or anything though.
"Don't you remember? My mother and I were the first ones to help you after you had the accident a few hours back," Astrid replied, taking a seat in the chair next to Hiccup's bed.
Hiccup snorted, "I do remember that," he said, "but I don't quite understand why you're here in the hospital with me now, sitting next to my bed, you know."
Astrid looked at his face, studying his facial expressions, seeing a few freckles all over his face, a light stubble growing along his sharp jaw, and of course, his mesmerizing green eyes.
"Well," she began, "the paramedics asked us to follow them to the hospital, since they didn't know who else to call."
Hiccup then let his head fall back on the pillow, letting out a sigh, "yeah," was the only thing he said, making Astrid wonder why he didn't want his parents informed about his current situation.
Astrid didn't know anything about Hiccup, the only thing she knew was that he was driving a motorcycle, that he's smart and kind of a nerd, that his best friend is Fishlegs Ingerman, who now was also one of her friends since he started dating her best friend Heather, and that's about it. She didn't know anything about his family or where he lived.
So she decided to ask him about his family, "why didn't you want your parents called?" She asked, and instantly regretted it since the boy on the bed flinched visibly.
Hiccup then looked at her, "it's none of your business, Astrid," he said, his voice ice cold all of a sudden. Astrid then knew that he didn't want to talk about it at all, which she kind of understood though. They didn't know each other at all, so why would he suddenly tell her about his family problems?
"I understand."
"Thank you," he said. His phone, which was laying on the bedside table all along, then started ringing. Hiccup looked at it and picked it up, accepting the call.
"Yeah?"
The person on the other side of the line then said something, which Astrid didn't understand since she couldn't really hear it. It didn't seem to be good new though, since Hiccup's eyes went wide, "no, no! You can't fire me, come on, I was on my way to work and then some stupid dude in his car hit me and my motorcycle off the road!" He argued, "I'm in the hospital right now, I have a broken leg and broken ribs!" He said, his voice growing louder by any passing second.
Through the phone Astrid could hear the other person say something like, "it doesn't matter, you're fired," and then, the other person hung up.
Hiccup started at his phone, like he couldn't believe what just happened to him. He then slammed it on the bedside table, "F*CK!"
Astrid didn't know what to say or do so she just asked, "are you okay?"
Definitely the wrong choice of words.
"Do I look okay to you?!" Hiccup snapped, he then took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. "Look, you should probably leave, you don't deserve being snapped at by me just because I have a bad day," he said, as calm as possible.
The blonde girl looked at him baffled, then she nodded and got up, making her way to the door. She then opened it and before she walked out she said, "get well soon."
"I'll try my best."
Monday
Astrid arrived at school, once she entered the hallway she was swarmed by students (as always). She found it really annoying and was glad when she spotted her friends, all waiting for her by her locker. Astrid quickly made her way to them, "hey guys," she greeted, receiving a hug from Heather and hey's from the other guys.
Astrid then got her stuff out of her locker and closed it again. She and her friends Snotlout, Heather and Ruffnut and Tuffnut then started talking about what they did during their weekends. They didn't notice the auburn haired boy with crutches limping up beside them, at least not until he cleared his throat.
"You guys are standing in front of my locker," he said as polite as possible. Balancing on his crutches and his right foot.
Astrid quickly made way, as did her friends, "sorry," she said quietly.
Hiccup smiled at her faintly, "don't worry about it."
The bell then rang, signaling the students that the classes are going to start soon, Astrid and her friends rushed to their math class, because you didn't want to be late when your math teacher is Mr. Mildew. Mr Mildew was an old grumpy man who was doing his job since at least 40 years now.
Astrid and her friends sat down at their usual seats, and waited for the lesson to start.
A few minutes into the lesson, a knock sounded at the door.
Mildew grumbled and opened it, revealing Hiccup.
"Why are you late?" He asked, his voice angry.
Hiccup smiled innocently, "sorry Mr. Mildew, but I'm not really fast on those things yet, and climbing stairs with them isn't really easy, especially when no one helps you," he said.
The grumpy old man glared at him, "well, maybe you should get some friends then," he spat, making Hiccup roll his eyes.
"Probably, can I come in now? Or are you going to have me stand here on my crutches forever?" Hiccup asked sarcastically, raising a brow at his math teacher.
The teacher growled, "no! I don't want you in my class anymore, you're expelled! Go see the principal boy," he snapped, face red with anger all of a sudden.
The auburn haired boy snorted, "you're gonna throw me out of your class because I'm five minutes late? Doesn't seem fair, does it?" He asked, making Mildew even angrier than before.
"NO!" He shouted, "I am expelling you because you're being a disrespectful, little shit! Didn't your useless parents teach you any manners, boy?!" He snapped, grabbing Hiccup by the collar of his hoodie, almost knocking the boy off his crutches while doing so.
Hiccup struggled in his hold, "let me go, you vicious old man!"
Mildew did so, making Hiccup lose his balance on his crutches and with a loud groan the boy landed on the ground. "Look at you, can't even stand on your own. Now get out of my sight," the teacher snapped, slamming the door and turning back to his class. Every student was staring at him, mouths hanging open in disbelief.
Astrid couldn't believe what she just witnessed, and even worse, that she didn't even try to help Hiccup, who seemed so desperately in need of help at the moment.
Wednesday
The past few days were absolutely horrible for Hiccup. No one in- or school outside of school ever offered him help if he needed it, he always had to walk to school and back, on crutches, and he still hadn't found a new job. He was running low on money and wasn't able to pay for his rent anymore.
Hiccup was living in a very small flat at the far end of Berk. Most people call it the Berk Ghetto, and the name suited quite well. There were junkies and drunk people everywhere, the criminal rate was high and there were people murdered almost every day. Hiccup himself had also been attacked once, suffering from a stab wound when some mugger tried to rob him. Luckily, the boy didn't have any money with him that day.
Well, now he was on crutches and he was lucky that no one tried to attack him yet, since he wouldn't be able to defend himself at all. Nor was he able to run.
Hiccup's place was about 10km away from school. Hiccup was driving most of the route with the bus, but he still had to walk like 1km and that took forever on crutches, especially during Berk autumn, where it gets really cold outside.
Hiccup arrived at his apartment building, an old building which seemed like it was very close to falling apart already. But it was the only thing the young man was able to afford and so he made his way to his flat. It took a while to get up the stairs since the building didn't have an elevator, but once Hiccup was at the door to his flat, he heard the door behind him open.
"Where's the money you owe me, boy?" An unfriendly voice asked, his voice was cold.
Hiccup turned around, looking at the man that stepped out of his flat.
Once Hiccup realized who it was, he cursed under his breath.
"I don't have enough yet, sir," he replied turning back to the door, and getting out his keys to open it.
The man behind him snorted, "you have to pay your rent boy, no rent, no flat!"
"I don't have enough money, I got fired from my job recently and have to find a new one first, please, give me more time!" Hiccup begged, turning back to the man. "Please, I will give you the money as soon as possible."
The man shook his head, "I want you out by Friday," he said, his voice even cooler than before.
Hiccup tried to protest, "but-"
"You're lucky I give you until Friday, boy!" The man spat, "if you're not gone until Friday 7am, I will make you leave, and it won't be a nice visit," he threatened and then turned around, vanishing back into his apartment.
Hiccup exhaled shakily, "what am I supposed to do now?"
And just like the building he was currently standing in, he was close to falling apart.
Thursday
Back in school, Hiccup limped up to his best friend, Fishlegs Ingerman, who was currently with his girlfriend, Heather, and Snotlout. They were talking to each other, so Hiccup had to clear his throat to get their attention.
"H-hey Fish, can we talk for a second?" The auburn haired boy asked, receiving a nod from the blonde boy.
They then walked over to Hiccup's locker so the others wouldn't overhear their conversation.
"So, what's up?"
Hiccup sighed, "can you do me a favor?" He asked.
"Depends," Fishlegs replied.
"C-can I live with you for a few days?"
The husky boy's mouth hung open for a bit after that question, but he quickly caught himself again and said, "I-I don't think so, mom said she didn't want you over that much anymore, since she thinks you're bad influence," he replied, shifting nervously from one foot to another.
"Please Fishlegs, I really need your help," Hiccup begged, he was ready to fall on his knees to keep begging at that very moment. If Fishlegs also turned him down, where could he go? No one else would ever take him in, he was screwed!
"I'm sorry Hiccup, but mom told me not to have you sleep over at my place anymore," and with those words his "best friend" left him, walking over to his girlfriend and her friends again.
Hiccup sighed, on the verge of crying, and let his head fall hard against his locker.
He was so screwed.
Astrid, who was on her way to her friends, overheard their conversation, wondering why Hiccup would need to stay at Fishleg's place for a few days. Maybe he had a fight with his parents and didn't want to see them for a few days?
Sounds about right.
Maybe she should ask him though, he seemed really desperate and in need for Fishlegs' help.
Of course, Fishlegs' mother didn't suddenly dislike Hiccup. It was just that Fishlegs was now a part of Astrid's little group of friends, since he was Heather's boyfriend now, and Astrid knew Heather was staying at Fishlegs' place over the weekend.
Which was probably the reason why Fishlegs didn't want Hiccup over at all.
The bell then rang and Astrid went to her first class, joining her friends at their usual seats.
The day went by very quickly, and Astrid didn't find the chance to talk to Hiccup again that day, since he suddenly vanished before the last two classes, which both were math, and Hiccup was still expelled from that class, so it made sense that he didn't stick around the school during that time.
Friday
Hiccup was out of his flat by 7am, taking everything he had with him. It wasn't much, just a few clothes, an air mattress, his stuff for school and a picture of him and his father on Hiccup's 16th birthday. He put everything in his bag and left the flat, leaving the keys behind.
He now was officially homeless.
His life couldn't get any worse at that moment.
Hiccup made his way to school, completely on autopilot. As he arrived, he went to his locker without paying attention to the people around him. Some people where laughing at him, since he looked tired, with dark circles under his eyes, because he had to leave his flat in a hurry and barely slept. Hiccup didn't pay any attention to them though, it's not like he had much to lose at the moment anyway.
No family, no friends, no home, no motorcycle.
He was at a point where he didn't even want to be alive anymore at the moment.
And no one would even care if he just suddenly wouldn't show up at school anymore.
Sighing Hiccup made his way to his first class, which was History.
He usually really enjoyed history, but not today, and especially not when he had to sit next to Fishlegs.
It was his lucky day though, since Fishlegs didn't even want to sit next to him that day, instead he was sitting next to his girlfriend and between his new friends.
Hiccup still couldn't believe that his best friend just ditched him like that. Well, maybe he should get used to the fact that everyone he thought he could rely on lets him down sooner or later anyway.
As the day continues, Hiccup got shoved around by some jocks a few times, but nothing else eventful happened. During math he went out to the bleachers, trying to get some time away from everything. He was alone for five minutes, but then someone sat down next to him.
Hiccup didn't even want to look at the person and started getting up, but stopped when the person that just sat down next to him put a hand on his knee, "stay."
Hiccup exactly knew who that voice belonged to without even looking at her.
He sighed, looking away from her, "what do you want?"
Astrid took her hand back, looking at him, concerned, "I want to know what's going on," she finally said, her intense blue gaze burning in the side of Hiccup's head like a laser.
Hiccup just scoffed, "why am I so important to you all of a sudden?! Is it pity because I lost my bike and have a broken leg?" He asked her, now looking at her. He tried to look as angry as possible, but his eyes betrayed him. In his eyes Astrid was able to read pain and sadness.
He then took a deep breath again, "look, I told you at the hospital, it's better if you just leave me alone, because you're the last person that deserves being snapped at by me, okay?" He told her, looking away again.
Astrid sighed and scooted a little closer, "listen Hiccup, I want to help you, I really do, but you have to tell me at least a little bit about you. I heard you talking to Fishlegs the other day, you asked him if you could stay at his place for a few days, you sounded desperate. Why?"
Hiccup then turned his head towards her, looking her straight into the eyes, trying to find any reason not to just run off again, to keep his problems to himself until they slowly kill him from the inside. He put his head in his hands and sighed, "it's just, you remember that call I received in the hospital?" He asked, receiving a nod as answer, "that was my boss and he told me that I'm fired. He fired me because I didn't show up that day, because of the accident," he said, now looking at her again, playing with the sleeve of his shirt.
"I really needed that job because I don't have much money and I can't pay my rent without it anymore, on Wednesday the person that I got my flat from approached me because I didn't pay my rent yet. I told him I lost my job and can't pay the rent until I find a new one and he told me that I had to be out of the flat until Friday, which is today," he told her, Astrid listened carefully.
"Well, that's why I asked Fishlegs if I could stay at his place for a few days, just until I find a new job again, but he turned me down when I needed him most. So now I'm homeless," he finished and Astrid slowly nodded.
"B-but why don't you live with your parents?" She asked, she's wondered about them for a while now. She's never seen them, never heard of them and Hiccup never mentioned them.
He sighed, looking down at the ground, "m-my parents are dead, Astrid."
She didn't know how to reply, "I'm so sorry, I didn't know...."
Hiccup smiled a little bit, still looking down at the ground, "don't worry, it's not like I always carry a sign saying 'I'm an orphan' with me."
That made her laugh a little bit, but she quickly got serious again, "you know, maybe you can stay with me for a while," she offered and Hiccup's head snapped up, he gaped at her, eyes wide and disbelieving.
"W-what?"
She nodded, "yeah I mean, it's not like we don't have enough room in our house, and if you tell my parents a few things about you I think they'd let you stay for a while, too," she said, smiling at him.
And for the first time in forever, Hiccup Haddock smiled back, his emerald green eyes shining again.
"T-that would be great," he mumbled, "a-a-and it wouldn't be for long anyway, I mean I'll try to find a new job as soon as possible," he said a little louder.
"My mom will pick me up after school, we'll meet at my locker after the last period and then we can ask her together, okay?" She suggested and Hiccup nodded eagerly.
They then heard the bell ring, signaling them that it was time to go back inside. They walked side by side, both not saying anything, but the smile on Hiccup's face said enough.
"I'll see you later then," Astrid said as they parted ways for their next classes.
"Yeah, and Astrid, thank you, even if your parents don't allow me to stay, you're the first person that's shown my kindness in a long time," he said and then turned around and walked off.
Astrid smiled to herself as she continued her way to her next class.
After their last period they both met at Astrid's locker, making their way outside, not caring about the students that stared weirdly at them, and also not caring about all the whispers that went around all of a sudden.
Astrid's mother was waiting in front of her car for her daughter. The sky was cloudy, a sign that it would start to rain soon, the blonde woman tapped her foot on the ground. She then spotted her daughter walking towards her, but she wasn't walking alone, a boy was next to her, limping along her with his crutches. It didn't take long until Ingrid figured out who this boy was, seeing that his left leg was in cast.
"Hey mom," her daughter greeted her, opening the door of their car and putting her bag inside. She then gestured Hiccup to hand her his bag too, but he hesitated.
"Sh-shouldn't you ask your mother first?" He mumbled, looking slightly embarrassed.
Ingrid crossed her arms in front of her chest, raising an eyebrow, "ask what?" She asked, looking at her daughter.
Astrid started rubbing her arm, something she did when she was nervous, "can Hiccup live with us for a few days?" She asked her mother directly, catching Ingrid off guard.
She surely expected a lot, but not that.
"Why?"
"It's a long story, mom, can we tell you back at home, please?" Her daughter said, looking around. Ingrid noticed that a lot of people were looking at them, she didn't quite understand why, but nodded and made her way to the driver's seat.
Astrid helped Hiccup get in the car and then hopped in herself, sitting on the passenger seat next to her mother.
Once they arrived at the Hofferson home, Hiccup's eyes went wide. Their house was HUGE, with a big garden, lot's of trees and a big fence around the place. He knew that the Hofferson's were wealthy, but he's never seen their house, nor had he ever dreamed of entering it.
Ingrid parked the car in the garage and got out, Astrid doing the same. They both then helped Hiccup get put too, Ingrid handing him his crutches and Astrid taking his bag.
"I-I can carry that too, Astrid," he said, but the blonde girl shook her head, walking alongside him as they entered the house.
Ingrid led him to the living room, gesturing him to sit down on one of the huge sofas, Hiccup obeyed, resting his crutches on the ground. Astrid sat down next to him a few seconds later.
"So, what about your explanation?" Ingrid asked, sitting down opposite of Astrid and her friend.
Astrid turned her head to Hiccup, obviously wanting him to explain, so he did so. He told Ingrid everything about him, answering questions when they were asked and also telling her stuff he hadn't told Astrid yet.
Ingrid listened carefully and when he was done, she nodded, "it's okay, you can stay here for as long as you need to, Hiccup," she told him, smiling.
Once he heard that, Hiccup's mouth hung open. They were seriously kind enough to let him stay at their house, even though they barely knew him.
"W-what about your husband? I don't think he'll be okay with a total stranger staying at his house," he asked, mumbling.
Astrid and Ingrid looked at each other, and smiled, "I'm sure Sven won't have any problems with you staying here either, don't you worry," Ingrid assured him, "Astrid how about you show Hiccup his room while he's staying with us?"
The blonde girl nodded, and took Hiccup's hand, helping him to get up, she then handed Hiccup his crutches and gestured him to follow her, which he did. A few minutes later - since they had to climb stairs and Hiccup wasn't the fastest at that, since he was on crutches - they arrived at the room.
Astrid opened the door and showed him around. The room was almost as big as the flat he used to live in, it even had an own bathroom and a huge bed.
"My room is the one next to yours, so if you ever need anything you can come into my room and ask me, okay?" She said and Hiccup couldn't help but smile.
"Okay."
"Can I ask you something?"
Hiccup chuckled, "you just did, but sure."
Astrid rolled her eyes, and laughed, then her face got serious again, "when you had the accident, the first thing you asked me was if your bike is okay," she said, "I-I mean, it's normally not the first thing someone asks after they had an accident, right?"
Hiccup looked down and shook his head, "I suppose it's not," he admitted.
"So why did you? Was the bike expensive or anything?"
The boy shook his head again, "not really," he said, taking a seat on the bed, Astrid doing the same, sitting down right next to him with only a few centimeters left between them.
"Well, when I told my dad that I want to drive a motorcycle, he was absolutely thrilled. He drove motorcycles himself and loved the idea of going on motorcycle tours with me," he told her, looking down at his hands the whole time.
"When dad was younger, he and his father built his first motorbike, so he wanted to do the same with me, too. One day, when I came home from school, he had bought this really old, rusty motorbike, which wasn't even able to drive anymore, nor did it have an engine or anything. He and I fixed it up together, we spent day and night building it, making it one of a kind," he sighed, "well, the motorcycle was probably the only thing I had left from dad, and now it's gone forever, because you can never replace something that was unique."
Hiccup stiffened as Astrid suddenly wrapped her arms around him, but after a few seconds he relaxed and hugged her back.
He hasn't been hugged in a long time, but here in Astrid's arms, he felt happy for the first time in forever.
"I'm sorry, Hiccup," she said, her voice muffled by his shirt.
"It's okay, it's not your fault or anything," he then pulled away, his hands on each of her shoulders, "I actually need to thank you," he said, "because you're the first person to show me kindness in a long time, even though we barely know each other, thank you Astrid."
Astrid just smiled and hugged him again, she kind of liked the feeling of hugging him, it felt really good for some reason, "you're welcome, Hiccup."
