War Meeting
...
Third Person P.O.V
Men scream as the torch rolls at them, and they jump, releasing the netting holding the Nadders. They fly off, making away with tons of sheep.
...
Hiccup watches the dragons with wide eyes, (Y/N) cringing when she sees Astrid glaring sharply at her.
"Okay, but I hit a Night Fury," Hiccup points to the distance as he looks at his dad, yelping as Stoick grabs him and begins to drag him off. "I-it's not like the last few times, Dad! I really, actually hit it!"
"He did," (Y/N) agrees, following after the two. "I saw him do it!" She tells the others as they simply look away, Stoick ignoring her.
Gobber looks between the two with mild sympathy, sighing softly.
"You guys were busy and I had a very clear shot!" Hiccup continues as he was dragged.
"It was just past Raven Point I think--"
She was cut off by Astrid grabbing her arm, silencing her with another glare as she sighs and shakes her head.
Hiccup watches the two with a small sigh before focusing on his Dad.
"We can get a search party out there and--"
"Stop!" Stoick bellows as he turns, making Hiccup flinch with wide eyes. "Just... Stop. Every time you step outside, disaster follows! And you always, always drag (Y/N) into whatever it is! Do you not realize she could have been killed today?!" He demands, his voice rough and full of anger.
Hiccup flinches once more, (Y/N) sighing as she looks down and away from Astrid's disappointed stare.
"And can you not see that I have bigger problems? Winter is almost here and I have an entire village to feed!"
Hiccup glances around, nervously grinning, "between you and me, the village could do with a little less feeding, don't you think?"
(Y/N) snickers quietly, making Hiccup grin over at her before frowning as Astrid elbows her side, making her instantly stop.
"This isn't a joke, Hiccup!" Stoick yells, making him jump and sigh. Stoick takes in a deep breath, calming down. "Why can't you follow the simplest orders?"
"I-I can't stop myself," Hiccup stammers, gesturing with his hands. "I see a dragon and I just have to just..." He motions crushing something in his hand, "kill it. You know? It's... Who I am, Dad."
Stoick groans, setting a hand on his forehead. "You're many things, Hiccup. But a dragon killer... Is not one of them." Hiccup sadly looks down with a scowl as Stoick continues. "Get back to the house."
Gobber approaches, Stoick nodding to him, "make sure he gets there."
He smacks Hiccup upside his head, making him flinch.
"I have his mess to clean up," Stoick grumbles, walking away with a shake of his head.
Gobber follows after Hiccup, the other kids laughing.
"Quite the performance," Tuffnut snorts.
"I've never seen anyone mess up that badly. That helped!" Snotlout sarcastically says with a smile.
"Thank you, thank you. I was trying," Hiccup replies in a bored tone, sighing softly when he glances at (Y/N) sitting by Astrid.
'Sorry', he mouths, looking away from her sad expression.
Gobber glares at Snotlout, grabbing his head and shoving him away as he yelps and continues laughing.
"Hiccup!" (Y/N) calls, standing and rushing to him as Astrid watches, sharpening her axe.
Gobber watches her as Hiccup turns, and she leans forward, whispering.
"Let's go find it later."
He perks up, smiling and nodding as she pulls away with a grin and a nod.
"(Y/N)." Astrid firmly calls, making her jump and turn back.
"Oh, um... Coming!" (Y/N) replies, turning back. "Ten minutes, come get me." She whispers, quickly turning and rushing after Astrid.
...
"... I really did hit one," Hiccup mumbles for the tenth time, making Gobber sigh.
"Sure, Hiccup."
"(Y/N) was there! She saw me do it!" Hiccup continues, sighing. "And yet, my Dad didn't even listen to her. He never listens."
"Runs in the family," Gobber replies, shrugging as they walk up to Hiccup's house.
"And when he does it's with this... Disappointed scowl, like someone skimped on the meat in his sandwhich," Hiccup rolls his eyes before making his voice like Stoick's. "Excuse me, barmaid! I'm afraid you've brought me the wrong offspring. I ordered an extra-large boy with beefy arms, extra guts and glory on the side," he mocks, waving his arms before gesturing to nothing. "This here... This is a talking fishbone!"
Gobber sighs, shaking his head. "Now, you're thinking about this all wrong. It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside that he can't stand."
Hiccup stares at him with a raised brown, his mouth opened in disbelief before he bitterly smiles. "Thank you for summing that up."
He turns to walk inside when Gobber stops him, "look, the point is... Stop trying so hard to be something you're not."
"I just want to be one of you guys!" Hiccup snaps back, his voice weak as he quickly enters his house.
Gobber sighs softly, shaking his head with a frown before turning and walking down the hill.
...
Hiccup races through his house, bursting from the backdoor and running to the village, making sure not to be seen.
...
He slowly moves along the wall, jumping as he hears muffled arguing through the glass of the window next to him.
"He did hit a Night Fury!" (Y/N) shouts with an angry huff.
"(Y/N), just stop!" Astrid snaps, Hiccup peeking inside and flinching back when they turn to look. "We get it, okay? You think that he hit a dragon. You don't have to keep saying it to everyone."
"She's right," Astrid's mom firmly agrees, sighing. "You've already shamed yourself enough today, young lady. Now is time to stop that silly talk."
"It's bad enough that you're always around that boy, but now he's got you telling tall tales," Astrid's father agrees, shaking his head with a sigh as (Y/N) flinches, looking down.
Hiccup sighs heavily sliding against the wall and hugging his legs to his chest.
"(Y/N)... We're sorry. We know it's been tough for you since your parent's... But you need to start getting used to this life now." Astrid's mom softly says. "So we've decided to put you through dragon training with Astrid and the others."
"What?!" Both girls say at the same time as Hiccup looks up towards the window.
"Are you kidding me?" Astrid demands, her voice full of disbelief. "I-- I mean... There's no way--"
"Astrid." Her father interrupts, making her flinch and grunt softly, her fist clenched. "It is done. Leave it be, child."
Hiccup peeks through the window, watching with a flinch as Astrid glares at (Y/N) before stomping up the stairs.
"... I'm going to go hang out with Hiccup," (Y/N) confidently says, grabbing her satchel with her notebook and pencil inside.
"(Y/N)--"
"And you can't stop me. You... You're not my real family, and I make my own decisions." She cuts them off, pain in her voice as she slams the door open, making Hiccup flinch as she roughly slams it closed.
(Y/N) takes in a deep breath, exhaling shakily as she looks towards the shrubs.
"Come on, Hiccup. I'm... sorry you saw that," she apologizes, making him yelp and quickly stagger out of the bushes.
He clears his throat, dusting off his vest, "Do you, uh... Want to talk about... it?" Hiccup nervously questions, making her smile softly and shake her head.
"You're sweet, but I'm fine," (Y/N) replies, grabbing a leaf from his hair and tossing it. "Come on. We've got a Night Fury to find."
She takes his hand, making him look at it with a heavy blush as she pulls him along.
...
"Either we finish them or they'll finish us!" Stoick's voice booms in the room as he talks to the men and women. "It's the only way we'll be rid of them."
He looks over the map as the people watch him.
"If we find the nest and destroy it the dragons will leave," Stoick slams his hand on the table, grabbing a dagger. "They'll find another home!"
He stabs it through a dragon on the map, sighing.
"One more search. Before the ice sets in."
"Those ships never come back," someone disagrees.
"The lass became an orphan because of these searches," someone else says, making Stoick softly sigh under his breath and look down at the map with a pained look.
"We're Vikings," he says after a moment. "It's an occupational hazard. Now, who's with me?!"
The Vikings murmur in disagreement, no one agreeing to join.
"All right," Stoick nods, standing straight. "Those who stay will look after Hiccup."
Everyone yells as they instantly raise their hands, joining him.
"I'm with you!" Snotlout's dad quickly yells, making Stoick nod.
"That's more like it," he dismisses, everyone leaving to prepare themselves.
"Right," Gobber wipes his mouth of his drink, sighing. "I'll pack my undies."
"No, I need you to stay and train some new recruits," Stoick disagrees, making Gobber sigh.
"Oh, perfect. And, while I'm busy, and (Y/N) training with me, Hiccup can cover the stall by himself," Gobber says, making Stoick pause as he sits down. "Molten steel, razor-sharp blades, lots of time to himself. What could possibly go wrong?" He sarcastically questions as Stoick sighs.
"What am I going to do with him, Gobber?"
Gobber pauses for a moment, his expression thoughtful before he looks back to Stoick. "Put him in training with the others. He'd probably love it since the lass would be there."
Stoick lets out a soft, dismissive snicker. "No, I'm serious."
"So am I," Gobber casually responds, his eyebrow raised as he shrugs.
"He'd be killed before the first dragon is out of its cage," Stoick disagrees with a scoff, making Gobber roll his eyes.
"Oh, ya don't know that." He grumbles softly,
"I do know, actually," Stoick replies, nodding with an amused expression.
"No, you actually don't." Gobber disagrees, shaking his head.
"No, I do."
"No, you don't!" Gobber firmly says as he turns to fully face Stoick, Stoick sighing as he rises.
"Listen. You know what he's like," he starts with a heavy sigh, looking around as he begins to rant. "From the time he could crawl he's been... different. He doesn't listen, he has the attention span of a sparrow..."
Gobber sighs and sips on his drink, nearly choking as his rock tooth slips out and into his drink. He looks inside of the mug, frowning.
"I take him fishing and he goes hunting for... for trolls!" Stoick throws his hands up with exasperation.
"Trolls exist!" Gobber yells confidently, pointing with his mug at Stoick. "They steal your socks! But only the left ones... What's with that?" He shrugs and shakes his head, returning his focus to his mug.
"When I was a boy..."
"Oh, here we go," Gobber grumbles softly under his breath, looking for his tooth.
"... My father told me to bang my head against a rock. And I did it!"
Stoick continues as Gobber drinks his drink, finding his tooth in the process.
"I thought it was crazy, but I didn't question him. And you know what happened?"
"You got a headache," Gobber sarcastically replies, using his mug to hammer his tooth in.
"That rock split in two," Stoick answers, pacing. "It taught me what a Viking could do, Gobber." He clenches his fists with a grin, "he could crush mountains," he waves his hand horizontally, "level forests," he clenches his fists, "tame seas!"
Stoick's smile falls as he sighs, walking back to Gobber. "Even as a boy, I knew what I was, what I had to become," he sits down, shaking his head. "Hiccup is not that boy."
Gobber was silent for a moment, "You can't stop him, Stoick. You can only prepare him."
Stoick looks up, processing his words.
Gobber sighs as he continues, "I know it seems hopeless, but the truth is you won't always be around to protect him. He's going to get out there again. He's probably out there now with (Y/N)!"
Stoick grunts softly as he looks away, sighing.
