5. Never Go Outside Alone
(Crossfire's POV)
It's been about a week since the girls stayed with us. I'm woken up to the unwavering smell of bacon and eggs. Someone did some good looting. I run to the kitchen to see Badger and Jay making breakfast. WITH REAL BUTTER!! "Where did you get that?!" I ask incredulously. "I keep the good stuff for visitors," Badger laughs. "How'd ya sleep, CF?" I roll my eyes playfully and laugh. I duck as Badger throws a spatula at me. "Fine fine," I laugh. We all sit sprawled around the living room. Badger really does cook good. I'd eaten her cooking before the outbreak. There is bacon, eggs, pancakes, BUTTER, syrup, BUTTER, French toast, BUUUTTEERRR!!!! Oh and butter. I pile up my plate. This is probably the most any of us have eaten since the outbreak. We finish eating and Sandstorm does dishes while we sort out errands and first patrol. "Soot, Ash, Jay, and Spider. Right?" Badger clarifies. "Yup!" I smile cheerfully and Spider grins. Badger tries to look normal but can't shake the worried look from her face. "She'll be fine. She's done it before remember?" I whisper and looks over at me and nods. "And I'll go with Jade for errands," Badger finishes after the patrol group left. We nod and head off to help out around base. We went ahead and took down the chores until we can get them permanently sorted out. I pick up around my messy room and sit on my bed. I glance out the window and see an oncoming zombie fleet. I crane my neck to see if any of the patrols are coming. No one. Of course not! I think. This is the one part of base patrol never goes. I grab my crossbow and silently creep outside. I run up to the zombie fleet and shoot them down with my crossbow. They creep closer. I fire again, but nothing happens. Shit! Out of arrows! I back away slowly but something pushes my down and I hit my head. The world starts spinning and gets blurry. I watch a retreating figure run away laughing as the zombies advance on me. I hear yelling and the smack of a bat to a zombie's face and gun shots. I'd already re-killed half of the fleet before I fell. No. I didn't fall. I was pushed. Someone bends down beside me. "Crossfire! Come on! Stay with me!" The person turns his or her head. "Get Badger!" And the world goes black.

My eyes flutter open and I groan. I see a blurry figure beside me who lets out a breath and runs out of the room. I hear more yelling and people running. "Crossfire!" Badger shouts. "You're awake!" My eyes widen and I see everyone clearly. "Someone...push...my head...am I scratched?" I murmur and sit up, checking myself for a scratch or bite but Badger pushes me back down. "Stay," she says. "You weren't scratched. Bloodstain made sure of that." She smirks and nods her head at Bloodstain leaning against a wall. You can tell he's trying to be cool but I can see how worried he was, in his eyes. "Never left your side the whole time," Badger whispers. "How long..." I murmur, my head throbbing. Badger's face goes dark. "A week." My eyes widen. "A-a w-week?!" I shout and try to sit up again but Badger pushes me back down. "Yes, but you're awake now," she says. Now I see the dark circles under her eyes. I look around. Soot, Spider, Sandstorm, Badger, Ash, Jay, Bloodstain, that all have circles and look like they haven't slept in days. "What happened?" Soot whispers. "I-I was...in my room..." I explain. "saw a horde...went outside...I'd killed half of em...crossbow ran outta arrows...I-I was...pushed...fell...hit my head...blacked out." My words are slurred and my vision is as fuzzy as my head. "Someone get her an ice pack please," Badger calls and Sandstorm takes off. I look over where Bloodstain was but he's gone. I lay my throbbing head on the pillow. "You were pushed?" Jay asks and Badger gives her a look. "What? It's what she said!" Jay defends and I wave my hand. "It's fine it's fine," I murmur. "I didn't see who it was...my vision went fuzzy...black spots..." Sandstorm comes back with an ice pack and hands it to me. I set on my head. "Alright, she needs to rest," Badger says and shoos everyone out. I sigh and close my eyes. "You had a concussion," someone says and my eyes fly open. "Calm down! It's just me," Bloodstain hisses. "Oh..." I murmur. "That disappointed huh?" He smirks and I let out a choked laugh. "No...I'm glad." "No one slept. Well, we didn't," he looks at the door sourly. "You're...so negative," I laugh quietly. He sits at a chair beside my bed. "Did someone really push you?" He asks, voice low. I search his face for emotion but find none. I sigh and close my eyes. "Yes...don't know who," I say. My voice is still quiet. Bloodstain looks down at me with that blank expression. He's never been easy to read but this is ridiculous. "What did they look like?" He asks. "I...I didn't see much...big...male...dressed in black...kinda...kinda like you...but...but bigger...and blond..." Bloodstain's face pales and his eyes go dark. "D-do you...know them?" I ask and he simply nods. "Who?" "Stay here," he says. "Just...get better." He stands up and walks out of the room. I sit in my little hospital bed, trying to comprehend what just happened. I close my eyes and try to picture the figure again. Blond...looked like Bloodstain...big...creepy laugh... That's all I can remember. I punch my pillow in frustration and instantly regret it. A shock chorused through my head. I groan in pain. "Bad idea," I murmur. I hate being inside and I hate staying still. But there's literally nothing else for me to do. I decide to take a nap, hoping it will stop the stabbing pain in my head.
