FOUR: IT'S A CONSPIRACY

FOUR: IT'S A CONSPIRACY

"HAVE FUN AT SCHOOL, DAN!" Heather exclaimed with a smile as she dropped her brother off in the middle school parking lot, "You're sure you don't want me to come trick or treating with you tonight?"

"No," Daniel shook his head as he pulled his backpack out of the backseat, "You're going to that party with Veronica, right? Have fun, I'll be fine. Besides, I think Jonathan is gonna come so we'll have someone to watch us."

Heather shivered dramatically, "That guy kinda gives me the creeps, but eh, Nancy and Steve seem okay with him now so I guess I'll have to get over it. So, you're absolutely sure?"

The curly-haired boy laughed and gave his sister a reassuring smile, "Yes, Heather, I'm absolutely sure! Now go to school or else you'll be late."

"Ugh, fine!" the girl groaned before saying goodbye to her brother and driving off towards the high school. It was Halloween day, but Daniel had chosen to forgo a costume since his mother hadn't had time to make one and he didn't want to try to convince her to buy one when he was only going to wear it once. Mike told him the boys were going as the Ghostbusters and Daniel could too, but he felt weird since he had yet to see the movie. Plus, as far as he knew there were only four Ghostbusters and he didn't want to stop one of the other boys from being included.

As he was walking onto campus, though, he noticed other students dressed in normal clothes. This was odd because last year almost every student wore a costume. Yet there wasn't a single costume in sight. So much for Halloween spirit.

There was, however, one group wearing costumes. His group. He walked up to them with wide eyes while Dustin was staring at the flood of costume-less students getting off of the bus.

"Guys, I love and appreciate all of you as friends but I genuinely do not think I can be seen with you today," he rushed out in one quick sentence. Honestly, he was only partially joking. There was no doubt the four boys would be stared at by every student in the small school all day and Daniel couldn't handle being apart of that. Not because he cared about being popular, but because he hated the feeling of people's eyes being on him.

"Understandable," Lucas muttered, all four boys staring at the students. The school bell rang and the four boys entered the hallway, Daniel slightly ahead of them. Really he was only walking faster because he forgot to take home the book he needed so he needed to run to his locker before class, but also he was trying to avoid the stares and the laughter.

"When do people make these decisions?" Dustin asked, sounding utterly defeated.

"Everyone dressed up last year," Will sighed. This was true, Daniel remembered he went as Luke Skywalker.

"It's a conspiracy, I'm telling you," Dustin continued.

This earned a scoff from Daniel, "It's not a conspiracy, it's just... unlucky."

"That's exactly what someone who's in on a conspiracy would say."

"Really, Dustin?" Mike asked with a sigh. "God, this sucks. Just be cool."

"Who you gonna call?" a random kid shouted, "The nerds!"

"Real clever!" Daniel yelled back in defense of his friends. Last year, he would not have had that much confidence yelling even two words, but now, he felt like he could shoot something back without a single stammer or stutter. It helped that Troy had been picking on them less. Ever since the 'Great Peeing Incident of '83' and the broken arm courtesy of Eleven, he hadn't felt like picking on them.

Mike offered his boyfriend a sad smile, "Thanks, Danny. Sorry that you have to be seen with us."

"Stop being so silly, I don't really care about you guys looking like dorks, you just, well, you know how I feel about staring," Daniel smiled, but there was a sort of resigned sigh to it. Daniel always hated staring, even more now that he had something as big as a relationship with another boy to hide. Any wrong move seen by the wrong person could mean his world comes crashing down.

The boys all got to their lockers, Mike leaning against the locker next to Daniel's as the boy got his books out. Daniel noticed how the new girl from the day before rode by on her skateboard. He also noticed Dustin and Lucas both turning to look at her.

"They're gonna get totally heartbroken," Daniel sighed with a small smile, as he looked at them, "Call me crazy, but she doesn't seem like the type to be open to crushing on someone right now."

Mike chuckled, "Shame not everyone can be as happy as us."

"Ugh, I know, right? Aren't we just perfect?" Daniel spoke in a slightly mocking tone, almost mocking the way his sister and Veronica often talked about boys (or girls, in Veronica's case. Daniel was still waiting to hear back on whether or not she was going to make a move on Mike's older sister or not). Both of the boys laughed and the curly-haired boy groaned, "Is it weird that I  wanna kiss you, like, really bad right now?"

"No, because I'm fairly sure I wanna kiss you equally bad," Mike laughed, shaking his head, "Too bad everybody's gonna be looking at me today. Ugh, I feel so stupid. I mean, you didn't even wear a costume!"

"Sorry, Mike, my mom didn't have time to make it for me," the boy shrugged, feeling slightly guilty. He made sure to send his boyfriend lots of sad puppy dog looks. Daniel watched as Lucas and Dustin turned and closed their lockers, looking at Daniel and Mike before nodding in the direction of their classroom, signaling that they were ready to go. He knew this was going to be a long school day for the boys. At least he hadn't worn a costume. It would feel a million times worse if he was there for the ride as well. He was lucky he only had to experience it second hand.

Mike looked at Daniel with a defeated expression, "You can come over before seven because you owe me like a million kisses for making that face."

"That's just my face!" Daniel exclaimed even though he was definitely not opposed to the idea of a million kisses.

The other boy's mood seemed instantly lifted as he responded with a small giggle that Daniel found adorable. "Trust me, I know, you kill me every time you look at me."

"Hey, lovebirds," Lucas softly hit Daniel on the shoulder as he, Will, and Dustin almost walked past them, "Forget about the class we have right now?"

"Shit, right, did you finish the homework? I think I forgot to finish the last question," Daniel asked the group.

Thankfully, Will nodded, "Yeah, I'll show you when we get to class. Don't worry about it."

Daniel thanked him before he shared a subtle look with Mike. Despite their oncoming storm of flirting being interrupted, Lucas hadn't stopped the matching blushes forming on their cheeks. Daniel was so unbearably in love with the boy next to him it almost hurt. What would always hurt the most, though, was having to hide it. He was sick and tired of hiding.
