Chapter Eleven: Where Did I Go Wrong?
I looked back up at Libitina, her gaze fixed on me and nothing else. My heart beat was through the roof at the words she wrote on the paper.
"Libitina I..."
Libitina seemed to he holding her breath. I calmed down and a smile stretched across my face.
Time to tell the truth.
"I love you too, Libitina." I said.
Libitina joined me in a smile while a tear came out of her left eye. She lunged at me and wrapped her arms around me.
She squeezed me tightly in a hug while I let out a giggle. Libitina let go of me and looked at me.
I patted her head and she smiled gleefully.
"Hehe." She giggled.
I took my hand off her head and she looked at me annoyed.
"Keep doing that." She said.
She grabbed my wrist and placed it back on her head.
"J-Just so you know. Some girls don't like their heads patted..." Libitina said as she fumbled with her words.
"B-But I don't mind it...just um... don't do it to anyone else, okay? Just me. I'm the only one that will enjoy your head pats."
"Haha okay, Libitina." I said.
I took my hand off of Libitina's head again and she was disappointed. She looked over at my other hand and looked slightly alarmed.
"Harmon?" She said.
"Yeah?"
"Did...did you hurt yourself?" She asked.
I looked down at my other hand and saw that I was bleeding heavily from the palm of my hand.
I guess I cut it on a tree while I was chasing Libitina to the lake.
"I guess I did. I'll be alright." I said.
"Harmon..."
Libitina took my hand and looked closely at it. There was a slight incision that went across the palm.
"Libitina I..."
I jerked when Libitina started licking the palm of my hand. I was slightly alarmed.
"L-Libitina!"
Libitina looked up at me innocently.
"Animals lick their wounds to make sure they don't get infected..." She said.
Libitina took the ribbon off of her neck and wrapped it around my hand. The bleeding eventually stopped.
However that situation was weird...my hand did actually feel better.
"Thank you, Libitina..." I said.
"D-Don't mention it."
I looked at my watch to see it was about 5:30. We needed to be back by 6:00.
"It's almost time to go back." I said.
I stood up and helped Libitina up. She grabbed my hand and we began to walk back to the camp.
Me and Libitina swayed our hands back and forth as we walked down the path.
She took my by surprise when she asked me a question.
"Harmon?"
"Yeah?"
"Why did you come here?"
"Um..."
Can I really tell Libitina about my mission? I guess I can trust her.
"Libitina..."
"Y-Yes?"
"I don't believe in Yankraught, I don't believe in the third eye, and I don't believe what they're doing is right. I was sent here to spy and evacuate civilians when the NWG liberates the camp."
Libitina went dead silent as she stared at the ground. She began to drag her feet in disbelief.
"Libitina...I'm sorry. Please don't hate me..." I said.
"Harmon..."
"Yes?"
"Did she send you?"
"Who?"
"The angel from my dreams? Are you here to save me?"
"Yes, Libitina."
I was here to help Libitina, but I had no clue about her angel.
"Harmon...I can't hate you when you're trying to help me...I...I..."
Libitina hugged my arm and whiped her face on my shoulder. She started crying a little.
"I love you...so much..." She said.
"I love you too..." I said.
"When...when are your people coming?"
"Soon I hope."
"Can we...can we just run away?"
"What?"
"We're already out of the camp. I don't want to go back...can we just run away back to your people?"
"Libitina..."
I thought about it. I loved Libitina...but there's people at that camp that need help. If I don't return with Libitina, they'll kill all those innocent people.
"We have to go back...those people need our help. I promise, I will keep you safe." I said.
Libitina remained silent and recollected her thoughts. She then turned to face me.
"Okay...I'm sorry Harmon..." She said.
"It's alright. We'll be gone soon." I said.
"Yeah! Then we can...maybe...live together?"
"Anything."
Libitina smiled and we continued our walk back to Camp Sabal. Libitina was really tired so I ended up carrying her piggy back style back to the camp.
We got closer and I saw a huge smoke cloud going into the sky.
"What the hell?" I said.
I began to walk faster towards the camp. The gates were opened a little bit so I squeezed through with Libitina on my back.
There was a huge pile of burned objects in the center of the courtyard that was causing smoke to go into the air.
There were white object in the pile. They looked like...human bones.
"AHHHHHHH."
I heard an ear piercing scream come from around back of one of the cabins. Libitina jerked awake on my back.
"W-What was that?" She asked.
"I don't know, stay here." I said.
Libitina slipped off of my back and looked at me. I pulled my Mauser out and cocked it.
"H-Harmon..."
I looked over at Libitina and she looked a little scared.
"Don't...don't die."
"I can't die on someone I love." I said.
I ran towards the back of the cabin to see a group of people dragging a woman away. There was a man down to his knees on the ground.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart." The man said to a little girl, who was standing away from them.
Suddenly a man in a black uniform shot the man point blank in the head.
"DADDY!!" A little girl yelled.
I realized that was the little girl that I saw the first night I was here.
She ran over to the man and knelt down by the corpse. She began to cry and I soon figured out that man was her father.
"Take the woman to wing B." I heard a man say.
I looked over at the man who said it, and it was Yalung. Two men drug the woman away as the woman tried to break free.
The little girl stood up and ran towards the woman and the two men.
"MOMMY!" She squeeled.
I slammed my eyes shut when I heard a gun shot. My ears began to ring as I tried to comprehend the horrific scene before me.
I opened my eyes to see another corpse on the ground. A girl was bleeding from the center of her forehead.
It was...
The little girl.
