J A Y

Sunday was just Monday in disguise, the day you regretted when you didn't do some homework on Saturday.

I sat in the local library, typing out my essay quickly, and hitting the keys so loudly the old librarian had to lean over her massive desk and hiss, "Shhhh."

The boy three seats down from me looked up from his book and laughed softly, "I feel like you think the harder you hit the keys the faster you'll type."

He had bright red hair, a silver piercing through the left corner of lip. He wore a bright rainbow sweater that was a crime in itself.

I looked up from the library owned computer, "Nice sweater."

He picked at the some of the pilled spots and smirked at me, "My grandmother gave it to me."

"Can you give it back?" I whispered as I reread the sentence I just wrote, deleting the last few words as I tried to think of a better metaphor.

"I've read for a good three hours and you've been typing that whole time. It's well past lunch, wanna grab a bite with me?" He put his book down and smiled at me kindly, and pushed the keyboard away from myself, rubbing my eyes.

"I'm starving," I smiled before holding out my hand, "Name's Jay."

"Anderson." He replied, shaking my hand before standing up—putting his phone in his pocket and closing his book.

I saved my work to my USB before sending it to myself for extra precaution. I slung my bag over my shoulder and followed Anderson out the door.

It wasn't until we were walking to the known store for the best kebabs on the coast, did my phone vibrate.

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall
This biggity boy's a diggity dog—" My cheeks burned as find my phone in my deep purse,"I have 'em like Miley Cyrus, clothes off
Twerking in their bras—" I dropped my phone before barely catching it in mid air, "And thongs, timber. Face down, booty up—"

"Hello?" I said breathlessly, shielding my face from Anderson's awkward facial expression.

"Jay?" Soren's voice held the air of question, as if it hadn't mean to me or hadn't expected I'd pick up.

"What the hell is up with my ring tone?" I hissed, gripping my phone as if I'd grip it harder my anger with be transferred to Soren.

"I don't know?" He paused and even I could hear laughing in the background, "That's was Colin's old phone, from his laugher I'm guessing that was the ringtone for me."

I gave a sarcastic smile to Anderson who had his hand over his mouth trying to muffle his laughter.

"Who's your friend?" He asked flatly but I knew he was intently curious.

"So, why'd you call?" I dodged the question, realizing Anderson could hear the conversation as we walked side by side.

"I'm sick," He grumbled his voice croaky, "because of you, you and your wet sneezes."

"What do you want me to do?" I asked as we stood in line for the kebabs, "I can't just help you drink soup and make sure your fever stays down, you have four million maids for that."

"What, no." Soren honestly sounded shocked that I had even suggested looking after him, "It's like a jail, my mom won't let get me out of bed. I need you to break me out, my fever is gone. I don't many friends.. But she'll believe you if you say I'm not sick."

I covered the mic of the phone and ordered my food before answering Soren, "Why would she trust me and not the doctor who told her that you were sick?"

Soren was silent before saying, "Meet me outside the my house in ten minutes, you'll be driving."

"Wait? No Soren I'm with—" the dial went flat and I closed my eyes, Anderson was collecting our Kebab, "I'm sorry but my friend—he needs me. It's kinda hard to explain."

He handed me my kebab before holding up a hand, "Don't worry, I knew a pretty girl like you must have a boyfriend. Anyways, this was fun...  Kebab buddy."

My cheeks flushed at his assumption but I was too tired to tell him I was single, "I'll see you around then?"

I laid down on my back against the cold concrete that the McKinin's owned. I heaved for air, splayed out on Soren's driveway, looking like a fish out of water.

I opened my eyes when a shadow was cast over my face, Soren's hair falling towards me. His blue eyes looked down at me in boredom, and I noticed his nose was red.

His piercing eyes stared at me blankly, "You're late."

"Yeah, well, you trying running all this way on a full stomach," I ran my sleeve over my forehead absorbing sweat, trying to calm my breathing.

He shrugged, throwing me the car keys as we walked towards his garage. Soren looked over his shoulder several times to see if I was following him.

I clicked a button on the garage and watched as the big doors swung open. My mouth dropped, there were over four cars all insanely expensive gleaming at me.

Soren walked casually over to a black sports car and climbed into the passenger seat, I gulped and prayed to God that I didn't scratch anything.

It wasn't until we were driving safely on the road did I ask where we were going.

Soren looked straight ahead and grunted, "I need to do Christmas shopping. We're going to the mall."

"You hate Christmas." I pulled onto the freeway, surprise by how fast the car could pick up speed the short amount of length.

"I never said I wanted to, I said I need to."
We sat in silence before Soren said in an afterthought tone, "You'll be paid for all this—"

"No, this is just hanging out." I said simply, turning off as we neared the largest supermarket in the city.

"No I will. I should be working and the stupid dickheads are still looking into hiring you at that other café, " He looked at me with an unreadable expression, "You need the money."

I turned off the engine and refused to look him in the eyes, "I know."

Jay held Robin's present which was the latest soccer cleats and a new soccer ball. Sure enough, Colin's would by the same ball but with a famous signature. I try (not really).

We sat facing each other in the small cafe which was packed, the doors lead out into the mall.

I watched Jay scoop the cream off the hot chocolate, the white fluffy substance touching her nose.

With an amused expression I handed her a napkin.

"You know, I finally figured out what your problem is Jay Whiley." My voice came out confident than I expected it to be. Jay cocked her head to one side so I expanded my statement, "You've never done anything bad."

She pulled the spoon out of her mouth and pointed it at me defensively, "We are not having this conversation."

I rolled my shoulders and smirked, "Truth, dare or double dare?"

Her eyes widened before she shook her head refusing to take part in my game. It wasn't until she'd drunken her whole drink did she finally except.

"Truth."

I coughed, "Well that just proved my point for me."

She raised and eyebrow at me and leant across the table, "Fine. Dare."

I looked into her eyes and watched as they clouded over with competitiveness, "If you don't answer the question or take the dare, you have to be a slave for the day."

She spat on her hand and stuck it out, "Deal." I looked at her hand and raised an eyebrow distastefully so she added sarcastically with a fake cough, "Wimp."

It was a gross feeling, two wet palms pressed up against each other. We looked intently at one another and I knew I wasn't going to win as easily as I thought.

"Truth, dare or double?" I asked her seriously.

"I said, dare."

I smirked before leaning back in my chair, "Go kiss that guy." I cocked my head in the direction of a brown haired boy who was looking on his phone, sitting alone at one of the tables. The key to winning the game is to set the bar high first round, see what your opponents made of.

Jay turned around looked at the boy before giving me a strong glance. She stood up and walked over to him, my eyes trailed her in amazement. She must've said hi because he looked up and his mouth moved, before I could blink she bent down and placed her lips on his.

Suddenly I felt an odd, scratching sensation in my chest, my skin burning; exactly like when I saw the bruise on my mother's face.

I watched as she looked him in the eyes before briskly walking towards me, she grabbed my wrist and dragged me out of the cafe, her face burning.

She seemed to shake herself out of embarrassment, patting down her hair as an excuse to do something with her thumbing hands.

"Okay Soren," she took a breath and looked at me fiercely, "Truth, dare or double dare."

"Truth—" Jay kicked me in the leg, it wasn't a hard kick but it sure didn't feel nice, "I'm kidding! Double."

Her face was the pure example of anger, her hair fell slightly over her face as she threw daggers my way. She glanced around the massive, six story shopping mall before something caught her eye.

"I dare us to use that test drive stereo over there," I turned and looked at the massive stereo which had two microphones attached with a sign saying 'Sing with me!' pinned to the front.

Jay's face was full of confidence and I watched it falter when I accepted the dare. I hadn't sung in years, my voice would probably crack on the first note. Jay organized a song for us and I looked around at the passing people. We just had to choose the busiest time of year with the largest mall to sing at.

Jay walked over to me with an evil expression, "You know the song Crazy?"

I shrugged, "I guess."

"Better be more than 'I guess' because we're singing it and I cranked up the volume real loud." She gave me a victorious grin, "Going to back out?"

I held the microphone up to my lips, "Never."

My voice echoed to the bottom floor of the mall, and I let my eyes close, wishing for death. The only thing that made me feel better was the fact Jay's hands were shaking.

We were in the center of the floor, so if you were to stand at the top floor and look down over the railing you could see all the way to the bottom floor, the exact place I stood.

(I highly recommend to play the song now)

Jay took a deep breath and opened up her diaphragm, the words that left her mouth seemed to be sung from heaven—she became an angel.

"I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space."

Her voice tore through the walls of the mall and echoed through every person's eardrum.

My throat was dry as I closed my eyes:
"And when you're out there, without care
Yeah I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much."

People started gathering around us now, I could hear footsteps but I refused to open my eyes in fear of what I might see. Something I hadn't seen in years; pride.

Jay and I sung together my eyes were closed who knows what she was doing.
"Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly,"

I sung and felt my heart clench.
My eyes opened stared at the crowd, everyone had their phones out. I looked up into the centre of the small, everyone and I mean everyone was leaning over the rails staring down at us. I looked at Jay who smiled before she closed her eyes.

"I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me,"

People were cheering and I couldn't stop staring around at everyone's faces. So much delight, shock.

"Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably ooh hmm."

I looked at Jay who was grinning from ear to ear, the crowd erupted into screams of cheers and clapping.
