The Relay Race
How to Mega Evolve Your Pokémon
A/N: Here it is! The sequel of "How to Train Your Pokémon." It will introduce some phenomenons that I didn't include in the first story, as if the title doesn't give any hints, and some things will be more familiar as the war had ended.
But before you start, I would recommend that you read the story before this, "How to Train Your Pokémon" so that all of you know what happened before this.
Now, let's begin! And action!
Chapter 1
The Relay Race
It had been three years since the war had ended. Well, more like the truth about it had been cleared up after fifteen long years. Now that there were no more secrets to hide, life had gotten much better for everyone. Well, probably not for those who are faint of heart.
Pallet Town continues to grow, though it still doesn't look like much. But that small town that served as the capital for the Trainer faction packs more than a few surprises. While some folks prefer hobbies like carving or crocheting, the folks of Pallet Town prefer a little something they like to call Extreme Pokémon Relay.
And that's what was going on right now. All throughout the town's vicinity, there were lots of fake Pokémon Eggs hidden along the course that all served as points. The Pokémon would have to find the Eggs and bring them to the relay station over at the hills, where their Trainers were waiting. Then, the Trainers would bring them over to their basket, which was connected by a tube. Along the race course, either Pokémon or Trainer could steal the Egg from whoever had it first. The fake Eggs were one point each, while at the last lap, a real Egg would serve as ten. Whoever scores the most points wins.
Right now, there was a green and orange fake Egg nestled in a nice little basket, waiting to be picked up along the course. Suddenly, a huge shadow loomed over it and quickly picked it up. It was a giant male Tyranitar with bright green and silver paint, a silver gray bandana tied around his right wrist and a large red visor over his eyes, and he hurried as best as he could to continue ahead of his competitors who were behind him.
Suddenly, a female Umbreon who had some of her yellow rings painted a bright blue color, wearing a similar red visor over her eyes and having a white ribbon tied around the base of her left ear, zoomed ahead with a Quick Attack, the silver energy trailing behind her, and snatched the basket of the Tyranitar's hands, holding it in her mouth. Then she turned around, running backwards, and her usually red eyes were glowing a bright blue as she lifted up the basket with Psychic.
"Oops!" She teased him in their own language, which was normally not understandable for humans. "Sorry, Flint. Did you want this?" Then with a laugh, she quickly turned back around and headed towards the relay station.
"Cosmo, that was mine!" Flint roared at her as he and the other competitors, a female Espeon with magenta and black paint on her pink fur named Rosalie, a male Empoleon with ocean blue and red paint called Jet, and a female Lucario with her face mask painted gold by the name of Xena, all tried to catch up to Cosmo. All of them also had red visors fastened over their eyes. Rosalie also had an amethyst purple gem necklace around her neck to match the jewel on her forehead. Jet had a red bandana tied around his neck. And Xena had a silver hoop earring in her left ear.
Just then, all the Pokémon had reached the relay station, where their Trainers were waiting. All of them were about eighteen to sixteen, all of them having earpieces in their right ears and similar visors over their eyes, both of which allowed them to communicate with their partners. They were widely known as the Pallet Trainees. There were the Ketchum twins, Luke and Evan, and the Newton siblings: Aiden, Keira, and Jenna.
Cosmo took the basket back in her mouth and zipped over her Trainee Keira, who was now a seventeen-year-old girl with auburn hair pulled up into a ponytail, blue eyes and fair skin. She wore a simple black blouse, jean shorts with black leggings underneath them, and bright pink high tops with black crew socks. Her ears were pierced with black colored Clamperl earrings, and she had a black Dark type symbol painted on her cheek, with a blue, black and yellow bandana wrapped around her right arm.
Then, Keira looked up towards the sky and Shiny Dustox wings appeared on her back. With a confident grin, she took off into the sky where the rest of the track was. Once their own Pokémon came back, the other Trainees took off into the air, giving chase.
Luke Ketchum was also seventeen years old, and he had wild raven-blue hair, amber colored eyes and tan skin. He wore a navy blue T-shirt under a black leather vest, lighter blue jeans, and black sneakers. On his upper arms were black armbands with spikes and on his right hand was a lapis blue ring with an Aura symbol on it. His face was painted with a navy blue Fighting type symbol on the right side and a gold Steel type symbol on the left side, with a gold and navy blue bandana tied around his right shoulder. His wings were Polar Pattern Vivillon wings.
Evan Ketchum was seventeen now, and he had shaggy sapphire blue hair, blue eyes and fair skin with little Z-marks on his cheeks. He wore a sky blue T-shirt, dark wash jeans, and brown boots. On his right wrist was a jade and turquoise bracelet with a sapphire droplet charm. His face was painted with an ocean blue Water type symbol on the right cheek and a red Steel type symbol on the left side, with a blue and red bandana tied around his right arm. His wings were Ocean Pattern Vivillon wings.
Aiden Newton was now eighteen years old, the oldest of the group, and he had wild auburn hair, dark blue eyes and fair skin. He wore a simple black T-shirt under a red leather jacket, jeans, and black and white sneakers. On his right wrist was a black felt wristband with a magenta Psychic symbol stitched on it. His right cheek was painted with a similar magenta Psychic symbol, along with a matching magenta and black bandana tied around his right arm. His wings were orange Mothim wings.
Jenna was the youngest at sixteen years old, and she had dark auburn hair tied into a simple braid over her back, compared to the twin braids over her shoulders when she was thirteen, and fair skin. She wore a light gray T-shirt, khaki shorts, white socks and dark brown hiking boots. On the right side of her chest was a silver circular brooch with a white opal in the center. Her face was painted with a bright green Rock type symbol on her right cheek and a silver Dark type symbol on her left cheek, with a matching bandana of the same colors tied around her right arm. Her wings were Sandstorm Pattern Vivillon wings.
Just as they were up on the air part of the relay, Keira shot a flirty look over at Luke. "Here you go, babe." She said.
She then tossed the fake Egg over to the elder Ketchum boy, who quickly caught it. "Did I tell you that you look amazing today? 'Cause you do." She even winked at him.
Luke groaned in annoyance while rolling his eyes. "You do know what the point of this race is, right?" He asked her before he zipped away, the Egg in his arms.
Evan then pulled up next to the elder Newton girl in flight. "Nope, he still doesn't like you like that." He said before he formed a giant bubble of water in the palm of his hand. "And you better make sure that your wings are dry!"
He then launched the watery sphere at her, making her wet and spiral a bit out of control in the air.
"You gotta learn to take a hint, girl." Cosmo said to her Trainee from her earpiece. "And to keep your head in the game!"
Once everyone had gotten to where their baskets were stationed, Luke pushed his Egg down his tube, and it slid down until it reached his navy blue basket, where four other Eggs were already in. The Trainees then flew over to the next relay station.

Meanwhile, down on the ground, watching the race from a giant screen, there was an audience gathered at the main stadium, cheering loudly. Seated at the announcers' seats above the podium were the Chief and Chieftess of Pallet Town, Ash and Dawn Ketchum.
Ash wore a plain black T-shirt under a red and white short-sleeved jacket, light blue jeans, and black and white sneakers. On his head, covering up his wild mop of raven-black hair, there was a red and white cap with a green logo on the front, and on his hands were green fingerless gloves. Perched on his right shoulder was a male Pikachu.
Dawn wore a soft pink blouse under a black cardigan, jeans, and black knee-length boots. Her sapphire hair that Evan inherited from her was loose on her back. Seated on her other side was a male Prinplup.
"That's five points for Luke!" Ash announced as the crowd cheered again.
Dawn nodded. "That's right, Ash." She said as she looked over at the scoreboard. "Evan trails behind his brother with four points, Aiden lies with three, Jenna is close behind with two, and Keira has none."
She then saw that the delivery tube highlighted in yellow didn't have any points either. She looked around on the screen and saw that the sixth competing team, her and Ash's daughter and her Pokémon partner, wasn't in the race. "And Mari is....nowhere to be found. Again."
Then, her and Ash's old friend, Gary Oak appeared, wearing a white lab coat over his clothes. "Scared her off with the big talk, did ya, Dawn?" He teased her, making her roll her eyes.
"What talk?" Ash asked, curious. "The talk, or the other talk?"
"The other talk." Dawn answered.
Ash lightly groaned. "Honey, we talked about this already." He said. "She's not ready. She's only eighteen."
"She has to learn that one day, she will take on those responsibilities." Dawn said. "She can't always be out there exploring."
"Did you forget what we were like when we were her age?" Ash reminded her. "This whole town and the faction were the furthest thing from our minds. So why should she be any different?"
"But Ash-" Dawn began.
"I know, honey." Ash said. "One day, she will learn of what is expected of her. But right now, she's not mentally prepared to do so."

Back out on the track, up in the sky, Aiden lightly slapped Keira's arm, making her yelp. "Ow!" She exclaimed.
"What are you doing, Keira?" Aiden asked his sister. "He's gonna win now!" He gestured over to Luke out in front of them as they neared their relay station.
"He's my soulmate." Keira said. "Whatever he wants, he gets."
Aiden groaned. "You know that there's different types of soulmates." He said. "And I don't think your bond with Luke is that kind of soulmate you're thinking of, unlike mine and Mari's. Besides, didn't he once try to bury you alive when we were kids?"
"Only for a few hours." Keira answered as they all landed at the relay station, giving the signal for their Pokémon to get back on the track.
Now, Pokémon used to be a bit of a problem for Pallet Town. But that was three years ago. Now, they all moved back into the vicinity of the town with open arms. Due to the nefarious meddlings of the once thought-to-be-dead Team Flare leader Lysandre, people and Pokémon were at war, losing many valuable things, including freedom and honesty. But thanks to the bravery of the Ketchum kids, along with their friends, they managed to defeat him once and for all.
Along the way though, the Ketchum kids learned that they and their parents are Trainees, which were mythological fairy-like beings that were said to be human, but with the powers of Pokémon and the ability to understand the language of Pokémon. However, if a Trainee saved a normal human from life-threatening danger, and if they were destined soulmates, then the human would become a Trainee themself.
Imagine Mari and Aiden's sheer embarrassment when Ash and Dawn explained to them and the other four young Trainees exactly how. But now, the two of them had been officially dating for about a year. As for the others, it was just as best friends. Evan and Jenna were fine with it, but Keira had it in her head that she and Luke were meant to be, which annoyed him to no end. But he still cared about her, since she was one of his oldest friends.
Ash smiled at the race from his seat. He then looked over at Gary. "It's time." He said.
Gary nodded. "Okay then, Ash." He pushed a button on the com-link near the seats. The words, "Final Lap" appeared on the screen as a loud horn sounded, echoing throughout the entire area of Pallet Town.
"The real Egg." Aiden said. He then pushed a button on his ear piece. "Come on, Rosalie. We can still win this thing."
"Got it, Aiden." His Espeon partner replied before they ended the link.
The crowd cheered as they watched the Pokémon race along the track, looking for the real Egg. Just then, Rosalie spotted something gray and red in the grass.
"I have a visual." She said to Aiden.
"Go for it, then!" Aiden said.
Rosalie zipped towards the Egg, ready to take the basket. The others immediately gave chase when they saw her leave the course.
"Come on, come on, come on, come on!" Aiden said, seeing through his visor what his partner was seeing as she got closer and closer to it.
But then suddenly, Flint appeared out of the ground in front of her, making Rosalie and the other Pokémon stop in their tracks, the dirt and dust blocking their vision.
Flint then carefully took the basket. "Good job, Flint!" Jenna said to her Tyranitar. "Bring it to the station!"
"On my way!" Flint answered back to his Trainee as he got back on the track and headed for the hills. Once the dust cleared up, the others quickly gave chase.
Xena managed to zip as fast as she could, and then jumped onto Flint's back. She then began to climb up.
"I'll be taking this!" She exclaimed once she was close enough. She then snatched the basket and flipped off, landing on her back paws in front of Flint and quickly racing ahead, just as all of the Pokémon arrived at the relay station.
"Nice work, Xena!" Luke said. He took the Egg from his partner and immediately headed up into the sky, the other Trainees following close behind. "Victory is all mine!"
"Not so fast, bro." Evan said, suddenly appearing next to him. "I'll be taking it." He grabbed hold of the Egg and tried to pry it out of his twin brother's hands.
As they carefully fought over the Egg, Aiden saw his chance. He flew down a little lower, waiting for the right moment to strike. From her spot, Dawn watched him with amused eyes.
What do you have planned this time, Aiden? She wondered.
Then, Aiden saw his chance. He sent out a little burst of pink psychic energy up at the Egg, and it flew out of the twins' grasp. They both gasped when they saw it fly through the air, but before they could try to catch it, Aiden zoomed up and caught it himself.
"Gotcha!" He exclaimed, laughing confidently as he zoomed ahead.
"What the?" Evan exclaimed himself, but in shock.
"Aiden!" Luke called after their friend.
From in the stadium, Dawn laughed. "Well played!" She said before turning over to her husband. "That's our future son-in-law."
Ash narrowed his eyes at her, crossing his arms against his chest. "Don't get started on that." He said. "Mari's my little girl, and she is not getting married until she's at least twenty-four, even if he is her soulmate."
Dawn giggled at how overprotective Ash is when it comes to their daughter. "You said it yourself, honey. She is eighteen."
"Still too young for marriage." Ash said. "We didn't get married ourselves until we were at least twenty. And we're soulmates."
Dawn smiled fondly and took her husband's hand in hers. "Yeah." She said softly, making Ash smile back at her.
Back out on the track in the sky, Aiden could see the tubes getting closer. Victory was within his grasp.
But just then, Keira appeared out of nowhere, flying backwards. "Excuse me, big brother." She said, getting ready to send out a ring of dark energy at him.
"Whoa!" Aiden exclaimed and quickly flew up in the air with a corkscrew maneuver, and the ring of energy hit Jenna, who was right behind him, trying to steal the Egg from behind.
The youngest Newton spiraled out of control and crashed into her older sister. The force sent both of them flying into a cloud, and then down to earth into a tree.
In the stadium, everyone winced and oohed at the sight. Ash, Dawn and Gary even winced from their spots. "That will leave a mark." Ash muttered.
"I'll be sure to let Cynthia have a look at them afterwards." Gary said.
Up in the air, Aiden was trying to recover from his risky corkscrew maneuver without dropping the Egg or getting dizzy. "Come on!" He said to himself.
Finally, he managed to right himself up again, just in time as he sent the Egg down his tube to where his other Eggs were nestled.
The crowd cheered at the sight. "That's thirteen!" Dawn exclaimed, standing up from her spot.
Ash chuckled at the sight of his wife acting so excited and stood up with her. "Aiden takes the game!"
The crowd continued to cheer for the victor of the Extreme Pokémon Relay Race. Aiden whooped and pumped his fist up in accomplishment from where he was flying. The other competitors just smiled for their friend, wherever they were in the course.
Rosalie lifted herself up to where Aiden was with her Psychic, and she nuzzled her Trainee. "Great work." She said.
"Thanks, girl." Aiden said to her before looking around. "And now, I think it's time we go find a certain duo of explorers."
Rosalie chuckled in agreement as they headed off the course and into the distance. Who knows where those two might be? They all thought that their world was so small due to the war and never being allowed beyond the boundaries of the town. But now that everything in life seems to be pretty much perfect, they knew that their world had gotten a whole lot bigger, and they couldn't resist the urge to explore and see what else is out there.
A/N: Like father, like daughter, huh? Just can't stay in one place for too long.
So that's the beginning of the sequel. Please leave a comment about what you thought of it. They are highly appreciated. And remember to stay healthy!
Got to fly! ;)
