Backstories and relationships are very important because let's be real here, nobody just spawned out of ground with a perfectly average life (unless they actually did.) By relationships I mean family, friends and enemies and other. There's a lot of things to go through which is why I'm here to help. Let's go through some things you shouldn't do first.

Do not:

- Make your oc edgy as hell. It's fine to give them a sad backstory but saying their parents died when they were two, they were left to an abusive household where they were beaten and bullied, people at their school hated them, their gerbil detonated and their only friend died in a horrific way is all just a bit much. Now if you want to give that big of a background to your oc, do it but maybe add some light in there. Take out the school part and say they had friends, for example.

Backstories

Backstories often manipulate how the character acts so it's good to give them a story partially based off of their personality. If your oc was quite a cheery person then maybe they had a mostly good life but maybe one of their parents left when they were young, leaving their family to struggle a bit. If you want to make your oc more dark and closed off, you could say they came from a rich family who were completely obsessed with business and never paid attention to them so they had to raise themselves, leaving them with very few communication skills. The possibilities are endless, just don't make them the almighty edgelord of all darkness and despair. Again, these are just ideas and you're free to make your oc as you see fit.

Family

When it comes to family members, you often have to be a little bit logical. It makes no sense for two redheads with plant based quirks to have a white haired child with a glass quirk. What would make more sense is that their child is also a redhead but maybe their quirk is slightly different from their parents. Maybe they can control soil instead of plants, it doesn't really matter so long as it follows a theme. What's sometimes fun is randomly generating two quirks for the parents and seeing how you could mix those into one quirk for your oc. Most of the quirks in mha are a result of quirks mixing together to form one. If you make your oc first then think about their family, it's best to just branch ideas off of the quirk your oc has.
