The Basics

    Tip #1:
When writing a story or fan fiction, you'll want to start off the story with something exciting or dramatic to grab the reader's attention. Some examples of good starters:

    • "Get out here!" I shriek, my screams echoing throughout my once quiet and peaceful home. I glare at the man as he stumbled out the door, then glance back at the chaos of a mess he made of my house. I exhale, deleting the contact number of that man who I once called my boyfriend.

    • She gripped at my long black hair, then shoved me against the ice-cold lockers. I kicked her stomach, causing her to soar and crash against three students who were watching in fear, unsure of what to do. Getting off aggressively and hurting the group in the process, my sister ran towards me, her fist ready to inflict damage on my already bloody face. Before she could, though, police officers ran towards us. Afraid of the punishment we'd get, we dashed off in different directions, attempting to lose the alert cops.

    Tip #2:
Use correct punctuation and grammar. Always check your spelling before posting. I'd recommend searching how to spell words if you're unsure how to, and ask a friend which "your/you're" or "there/their/they're" to use. If you're a grammar cop like I am, all you need to do is check for spelling mistakes.

Always use commas when necessary. When you're sure that in a sentence, there's supposed to be a pause, then put a comma. Therefore, it won't be a run-on sentence which'll be hard to understand.

    Always use apostrophes ( ' ) when a word is a conjunction. Some examples are "you're", "they're" "what'll", etc.

    Tip #3:
     Try using creative words. Example:
    • I roamed the dimly lit mansion, my nearly-dead flashlight illuminating the aging stone walls.
Here's what it'd look like if you utilized over-used words:
    • I walked through the dark mansion, my flashlight lighting the old walls.

See how different it looks? The first example is more interesting than the second. If you need synonyms, look it up or ask somebody who knows a lot of advanced words.

    Tip #4:
Don't use filler too much. If you don't know what I mean by "filler", filler, in terms of writing, is basically a phrase or sentence that isn't written to progress the story. Instead, it's only there to "fill" in a place where a potential phrase or sentence could be, hence the name "filler".

Using filler is alright! If you have writer's block, filler is an okay way to write or type sentences to make paragraphs without progressing the story. However, using filler too much is bad, as it makes the story boring since the story is barely progressing. Here's an example:

    • I stare at the park, a wave of nostalgia washing over me. The lush grass swayed with the wind, the leaves on several trees doing the same. I could hear people talking. Birds chirped. I rush to the tree, looking up at its huge branches. It's freaking amazing!

Here's how it'd look without the filler, which is underlined:

    • I stare at the park, a wave of nostalgia washing over me. I rush to the tree, looking up at its huge branches.

As you can see, the story only progressed with two sentences in a paragraph. I'm not against filler, as most of the time I see authors describe the settings and the people around you. But if the filler has nothing to do with the story or it drags the story on for too long, I'd recommend removing it.

    Tip #5:
Spell words out, don't type like you're texting. In most stories and fanfics, people type, "ok" or, "omg ok lol" when someone is thinking or talking. It's fine if they're texting in the story, but please, when they're saying or thinking, spell out the words.

Example: Spell "ok" as "okay". Although ok is a legit word, spelling out okay is better, as it doesn't give the reader an impression that you're typing,

Also, use "you", "your" and "you're" instead of "u", "ur" and "u're". Again, "u", "ur" and "u're" give the impression of texting. Use actual words, please.
