Story Structure: Beginning, Middle, and End
Literally how to write a story, requested by one of my lovely readers <3
There's a lot to consider when making a story, and a lot that goes into the composition. Like.... a lot. I'm going to give only the bare minimum, scraps to consider and keep in mind when creating the skeleton for your story.
I know planning is never fun, especially when you just want to write your OC's story. However, planning is CRUCIAL to making a solid story. So, here's a description of how to structure your story.
BEGINNING
A very very important part of your story, the beginning is what draws the reader in.
Here is a plot chart:
Wow.
Okay so the begging is the 'exposition' part of the plot diagram. This is where you introduce your character and setting. That means I want to know your character exists, get an idea of their personality, know what their territories' terrain is, what the season is, and maybe some of the character's closest friends and family member.
You should be introducing your plot here, too. It's not time for the climax of He story, just weave in the threads for the plot. For example, if your story's conflict is that the Dark Forest is going to attack, then you'll want to start weaving that there's a problem. Possibly in character conversation, or in a scene where the character has a dream or something like that~~. This will make your readers want to stick around to know the rest of the plot, if it's interesting enough, that is.
I'm going to be writing a separate part on the prologue/first chapter because that's SUPER important for maintaining interest.
MIDDLE
The rising action is after the exposition of the story. This is the longest part of the story, and leads up to the climax. This is where the conflicts and problems start popping up. For example, in Into the Wild, the exposition ends and rising action starts around when Fireboi starts his training.
For your middle, you can take as long as you want, the rising action is usually a large chunk of the story as I said. It should continue to be interesting, and you need to try to keep pace.
Don't include filler chapters. You shouldn't ever need a filler chapter. All chapters should relate either to the main plot or to a side plot. So if the main plot is a villain and his gang are trying to invade the territories, but you have a side plot of best friend is dating a RiverClan cat, then don't make a chapter about hanging out in camp to 'develop character.' Develop character through the plots; that's what they're there for.
The chapters should all build up to one moment: the climax. Like, Sherlock Holmes has been finding clues for each chapter and then BAM he figures out the killer is, and he's right next to them in a dark room!! EVERYTHING LEADS UP TO THIS MOMENT. THE CLIMAX. "YOURE THE SERIAL KILLER?! YOURE MY BEST FRIEND, HOW COULD YOU?!?!???" FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. The climax is the BIG MOMENT. It's THE CLIMAX. EVERYTHING LED TO THAT MOMENT.
END
The falling action and resolution can take anywhere from a paragraph to 2000 chapters, but it really doesn't usually take a long time since it's just resolving the plot. It's where the climax is over. Dust blows over from the battle. The fight is won. Or lost. It's the falling action, time to clean up and go home. Tie up loose ends of plots, ( example: Greystripe will leave to be with his illegal children, which gives closure to the whole half clan kits thing ) and come down to the resolution.
The resolution is the end. It's the final thing. It's.. it. That is all. Everything is solved. The end.
If you write the bare meat of your plot along a plot chart, it will help you develop even more ideas as you question: how will Firepaw gain skill to fight Brokenstar? Oh, I know, he'll need to have training sessions during the rising action. I haven't read into the wild in like 3000 years so I could be a bit off on example lmao but you get what I'm saying, right??
The plot chart exists to help give organization to your plot. If you're better off just writing everything down on paper without noting if it's exposition, rising action, climax, or resolution, then do what you want. I'm not here to dictate story planning lol. I'm just here to maybe help give guidance.
Make sure to leave a comment with anything you want me to talk about. I'm trying to scrape together another Tips chapter at the moment too, so that might be out at some point...
