Chapter 50:Ebb and Flow

A/N: I hope you all enjoy it!

Cody's pov:

I thought about rewinding time over and over again. Thought about what I could say or do differently.

But June would kill me for using my power like that. And the only thing I could do differently is to tell her the truth.

"Hey Nia you know that we're Monsters, well Monsters have soulmates and you are ours." She'd probably flip out and run away just like she did on that day.

And from the check-ins I had with my mates, she ran away again from Gannon over a misunderstanding. If she was bombarded with the truth she may want nothing to do with us.

The possibility made an ache form in my chest. So I let her have space for the week, outside of class at least physically that is.

I got into the habit of texting her every day. Asking how her day was, and helping her with her work in other classes. Listening to her complain about her roommates.

Little by little I got to know her all the more and encouraged my mates to do the same. It was adorable to see the way my mates' faces lit up whenever they got a text from her while out on our dates.

While in class, I stayed close, helped her with notes, reviewing things, I was always her partner in group activities. I also encouraged my mates to spend as much time with her as they could manage.

It was getting harder and harder to keep that distance from her. My fear of pushing her away ebbed and flowed like a tidal wave.

Even now Nia is back to slowly putting distance between us in class. That guy from before, Alan, has been hovering around her more and more as of late.

I wanted just to keep an eye on things between them and I was glad that I did. Seconds before class started today he asked her out on a date.

Thank goodness she didn't answer yet and rushed into class but I still wasn't sure if she'd want me to ambush her after that. Nia looked to be more distracted in class than usual.

Her eyes flicked over and locked onto my gaze. I wanted to go over to her and clear things up right then and there.

Yet one throat clearing from the professor, Nia's Monster Hunter uncle made us look away from each other. He was checking her work and I glared over at the clock on the wall waiting for this class to end.

Time seemed to drag on and I was tempted to use my ability again. To speed up time until I got to Nia then slow it down to savor every moment with her.

The bell rang just as I zipped everything inside my bag. I shouldered it and ran out of the room to catch up with Nia.

She moved quickly and quietly through the crowd of students, dodging and weaving like a ninja. Her dodging from one person to another made her stumble as someone rushed out of their classroom.

I reached out, grabbing her forearm in a tight grip, turning us both so that she wouldn't fall. Which resulted in me pressing her back against the wall, my other arm cupping the back of her head to lessen the impact.

Someone pushed me from behind, pressing me even closer to Nia until one of my legs slipped between hers. We both groaned at the quick actions and looked at each other in shock.

"I don't have a girlfriend", I said the first thing that popped into my mind.

"What?", she asked quietly, tilting her head slightly.

"You left my place and have been putting distance between us because you think June is my girlfriend right? She isn't and never will be", I told her the honest truth, but not everything.

Nia's eyes dropped from mine, she bit the corner of her lower lip before she spoke again, "That's not the only reason."

"I'm listening. Nia, please talk to me", I softened my tone as I lowered my head and moved my hand from her neck to her chin, "I'm here for you in every way you want and need me"

Her eyes locked with mine, and her lips parted. Her hands reached out gripping the fabric of my shirt, pulling me a bit closer.

"Why me?" She asked as her hands started to tremble with some unknown emotion.

I could use my power and get a taste of whatever emotion buzzed through her but I didn't want to do it without her knowledge. None of my mates even knew about that ability.

"What do you mean?", I asked in a whisper, as I leaned even closer to her until my cheek brushed against hers and my breath fanned her ear.

"You go out of your way for me. Not just you, Roger, Gannon, and Auden do as well. Checking in on me, taking me out to eat, and looking at me like..like", She stopped to catch her breath from forcing the words out so fast.

"Why not you? Nia you're important to all of us", I told her the truth and felt her let go of my shirt.

"This isn't..No..My uncle said that it's all because of my bloodline from hunters, I'll attract monsters. That is all this is. So I think it would be best if", She started to ramble off reasons that were off the mark.

I pressed my forehead against hers, "Nia. Please stop pushing me away. I won't ever intentionally leave scars on your soul. You mean too much to me"

"Cody", she exhaled my name, her breath fanning my lips and I moved a bit closer.

"Nia!" Alan's voice cut through the personal bubble that covered Nia and me as it felt like the rest of the world fell away.

To my delight, Nia didn't turn to look in his direction after we both jumped at the sudden intrusion. Her eyes stayed on mine and I looked pointedly at her lips before I moved closer to claim them in the kiss I'd wanted since meeting her.

Alan was faster than I thought and stuck his hand between us. Pushing me back with his palm against my forehead.

"What the hell are you doing to my girl?" Alan spat out the words as he stepped between the both of us.

Nia moved out from behind Alan with a scoff, "I'm not your girl. We're just friends"

Alan turned to face Nia, "Don't give me that bullshit, Ma. We've known each other too long. There's always been something between us"

Alan walked closer to Nia, reaching out a hand for her to take, "It will be so easy with me."

Nia looked at his hand then looked at his face. He stepped closer to her, speaking gently, "Remember all the good times we shared."

Nia stepped closer to him, pushing his hands away, "If those good times mean anything to you, you will never be rude to my Cody again do you understand?"

Alan wrapped his arms around Nia, laughing before he whispered something in her ear and let her go. He turned to face me with an easy smile, stepping into my personal space.

"I'm sure Alphonse told you to keep your distance from Nia. Why don't you try harder? Maybe switch classes. We don't want anyone getting hurt do we?" He told me while squeezing my shoulder before turning back to Nia.

He grabbed her hand and dragged her away. Nia tried to yank herself out of his hold, she growled, "Let me go, Alan"

I rushed to follow them, breaking them apart and screaming, "She told you to let her go, you creep!"

The feeling of eyes on us was immediate and the whispers of fellow students caused a grin on my face. Alan glared at me as Nia wanked her wrist free from his grasp.

She shot me a grateful look before glaring at Alan, "What has been up with you lately? You've never been so pushy before"

"You've never been such a fucking flake on me. I feel like every time we hang out, you run off to be with your other friends. Like him", Alan spoke with a huff and he gave me a pointed look.

"She hasn't been seeing me outside of class recently", I told the truth as I slipped my hands into my pockets, showing a small smirk on my face.

"Let's all go out then, You can meet my other friends. At that frat party, you mentioned before. Friday at six.", Nia spoke out a compromise.
