Chapter 31: Talking to Myself

A/N: I hope you all enjoy it!

Cody's POV:

I avoided June when I came home last night and I have successfully continued to do so today. Everything that happened was so much so I dove into my work to avoid thinking about it.

The cracking of my bones felt and sounded satisfying, it signaled the end of my homework for my classes. At that moment my stomach started to twist with hunger pain.

I glanced at the door with growing anxiety. I wondered how fast I could make a sandwich, grab a bag of chips, a water bottle and get back into the safety of my room.

I could last a little longer without eating, the hunger pain decided to get worse at that moment. A sigh left my lips as I got out of the chair, walked out the door and rushed into the small kitchenette that I share with June.

Luckily everything went fine while I made my late lunch, yet upon arriving into my room June sat on my bed with her legs crossed, casually on her phone. I sucked in air through my teeth and took a step back, hoping to back into the hall.

The door closed behind me, and I knew that I had to come clean to June. I walked over to my desk and set my paper plate, and water bottle down.

"What happened this time?", June asked in a harsh tone and I could feel her eyes on the back of my head.

"Did you know that soulmates exist?", I asked nervously instead of pouring out my guts to her.

"We are leaving", June said as she stood from the bed and pocketed her phone.

"What?", I asked as I tensed in the chair waiting for a response.

"We can't have soulmates, not when those people are after us, Cody", June explained as she walked over to me, running her fingers through my hair, "It will be better this way for everyone."

I couldn't come up with a response as June left the room. When the door closed a hand fell on the back of the chair, my eyes trailed up until I saw myself.

"You can't go along with this", The older me spoke with urgency.

I blinked a few times before I whispered, "This is a crossroad."

Before the older me could say anything I grabbed at his shirt and yelled in his face, "Why choice now? I'm sure there was a crossroads before, when our parents were taken, why not choose then?"

"There was nothing we could have done then, that didn't end in everyone's death", The older me explained as he pulled my hands off his shirt.

I sighed heavily and sat back in my chair, "Isn't there supposed to be two of you. Dad said there should be more than one when a crossroad is used by a future self."

"You haven't allowed yourself to consider leaving yet. I'm your knee jerk reaction to stay with our soulmates", The older me explained as he slipped his hands in his pockets.

I covered my face with my hands and really thought about leaving. Removing myself from my soulmates memories, erasing every trace of being here.

No more sitting in class with Nia. No more opportunities to ask Auden, Gannon, or Roger to hang out.

All of our very limited time together will be gone forever from their minds. While I'm left alone and aching for them.

I heard a dark chuckle that sounded like my own voice, "A crossroads, huh."

I lifted my head to stare at the third me who seemed to have shaved off half of his hair. He looked at me then the second me with a sneer before digging into his pocket.

"Don't leave", The third me spoke as he placed a cig between his lips and lit it with his finger.

I raised my eyebrow at him as I questioned him, "Aren't you supposed to vought for your choice? Why do we have fire power?"

He inhaled the smoke then tilted his head back to exhale slowly. My eyes flicked down his neck to the scar that had to come from someone slicing open our neck.

He plucked the cig from between his lips before he answered, "That's what dad always said, but consequences be damned I've been waiting for this moment since I left"

He walked over to me and lowered his head until we were inches away. I saw the pain and sadness in his eyes.

"Don't leave Cody. If you do, you will have to make choices that will rot your soul", He spoke seriously before he took another drag from the cig.

"What happened to you?" I asked, determined to get some insight on what might happen.

"Tourture, Death, our hands aren't clean", He ran a hand through the shaved side of his head, He looked over at the other me, "What about you?"

"The good outweighs the bad by millions.", The other answered with a smile growing on his face.

"Can I ask one thing? Are our soulmates in our life?", I asked as I looked between them anxiously.

"Yes", They answer at the same time, yet the word sounded so different from each of them.

"What about our parents?" Before I could get an answer, June came into my room.

She looked at me then around the room then to me again with a sigh, "Please work with me here, you haven't even started. Do you remember the number that the parents gave us to contact louise to set up another safe location?"

My eyes flickered between the other two which caused June to look as well then look at me confused, "What's wrong?"

She placed her hands on her hips, "Cody, we have to get packed and leave."

I lifted a hand, trailing my fingers along the length of my neck, thinking of the scar. I glanced between the two again before I asked, "Do you have any regrets that rot at your soul?"

"What?"June questioned me, not understanding in the slightest or able to see the other two Codys.

"Whatever bad I went through has made me who I am now and I love myself", The Cody that first appeared answered sincerely.

The second Cody smothered the now much shorter cig with his thumb before giving me a tired smile as he started to disappear. The other Cody disappeared as well, leaving only June and I in the room.

"I'm staying, June. It's the better choice. If they come, so be it", I told her as I turned in my chair and finally grabbed my sandwich.
