Mark's POV

"Drive safely, son," my mom said. "Stay within the speed limit."

"Yes, Mom, I will! Bye! Love you!" I called out to my mom as I rushed out the front door, briefly glancing at my watch.

Shit, I was running late as usual.

Today especially was the worst day to be late for my pharmacology class because the professor was a stickler for punctuality.

The professor was walking towards the door of the auditorium to lock it when I managed to rush inside.

"The gods smiled on you today," the professor remarked. "You got in half a second before I reached the door."

I bowed to the professor before taking one of the seats in the front row.

I did my best to stay focused on the lesson. I needed to complete my degree in pharmacy in order to obtain my pharmaceutical license. My parents were expecting me to eventually take over our pharmaceutical company.

"Hey, wanna join me at the cafeteria?" My classmate, Perth, asked as he walked beside me on the covered walkway after class.

"Sure," I replied.

"You really got lucky today," Perth remarked as he bit into his ham and cheese croissant.

"Actually I thought I wouldn't be able to make it," I replied with a chuckle. "Professor Tangsakyuen was right when he said that the gods smiled on me today."

"Yup," Perth agreed wholeheartedly. "What are your plans after your last class today?"

"Stop by the library to do some research," I replied.

"Don't you have a life outside of school?" Perth asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

I chuckled.

"I always tell myself whenever I have to postpone fun activities in favor of academic requirements that all things come around to him who will but wait," I said before I finished up my coffee.

"What if they don't come around," Perth asked.

"Trust me they will," I replied as I stood up from the cafeteria stool and turned on my heel and promptly bumped into someone who had been walking behind me.

The collision must have been hard enough that the other person almost lost his balance.

I caught him just in time or he would have ended up on the cafeteria floor.

"I'm sorry, bro," I said as I looked into the face of the other guy.

"It's alright," the other guy replied and quickly extricated himself from my arms and walked towards the food counter.

"Did you notice his face?" Perth whispered to me.

"Shh... yes I did," I replied. "He must have had a bad day. His eyes were still puffy from crying."

"His professor must have given him a hard time in class today," Perth remarked.

"Those days can happen," I replied grimly. "I wish him the best."

"He was very handsome though," Perth said.

"Shh... he might hear you," I cautioned Perth.

"Oh c'mon, Mark, he's too far away now to hear us," Perth said with a chuckle.

I laughed along. "But still you never know, he might have better than normal hearing."

I did not want to admit to Perth that I had developed an immediate crush on the guy that my arms had held for a few brief seconds. I wondered whether I would ever bump into that guy again. I turned my head to take one quick look at him. He had found a spot in one corner of the cafeteria. He had a cup of coffee or tea in front of him but he wasn't sipping from it. Instead his elbows were resting on the table and his head was bowed, his hands covering his face.

I badly wanted to walk over to him and comfort him but I was sure that Perth would think that I had lost my mind.

I tried not to think about that guy again as I went through the rest of my classes.

"See you tomorrow, bro," Perth said to me as we parted ways after our last class. "Don't stay overnight at the library."

I laughed. Trust Perth to exaggerate every single thing.

I waited for the elevator to take me to the third floor of the building where the library was located.

The librarian smiled at me when I walked into the library.

I was a frequent visitor at the library so I was a familiar face to the librarian.

I acknowledged the librarian's smile with a slight nod of my head.

I walked over to the row of shelves that carried the book that I wanted to read.

Somebody was already there before me.
