Rule No.6

Don't drive when tired or sleepy.

I've fallen asleep while driving on the Pennsylvania turnpike. Fortunately, it was late at night, there was little traffic and I didn't hit anything. I was lucky. Many people die from this mistake, and it could be avoided with some simple steps.

First step is really simple. Avoid driving at night. Many people who are embarking on long trips like to get an early start by driving at night. This is fine as long as you've had plenty of sleep beforehand. Don't be like Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) in National Lampoon's Vacation and fall asleep driving his family cross-country. That was scary. If you do drive at night, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of coffee.

It's very easy to fall asleep driving on a highway during the day, especially when driving through boring countryside. The road has a mesmerizing effect on a driver and it's easy to nod off and end up either going off the road or drifting across lanes. This is a recipe for a bad accident.

Statistics show that 250,000 drivers fall asleep at the wheel every day in the United States, and this results in 1,550 deaths and 40,000 injuries annually - according to the National Traffic Safety Administration. This problem is the result of sleep deprivation, which results in impaired concentration, longer reaction times, faulty judgment and the inability to remember. The symptoms of this are difficulty focusing, daydreaming, yawning, and feeling restless and irritable. People who are sleep deprived have difficulty keeping their head up. They miss exits and don't notice signs. Sleep deprivation is almost as bad as alcohol consumption or texting.

Commercial drivers, shift workers, and drivers who use sedating medications are the most likely to get involved in a sleep-deprived accident. The only cure for this problem is to get enough sleep and definitely refrain from drinking alcohol or taking sleep altering medications.

Driving while drowsy causes 100,000 vehicle accidents per year, so it's a serous problem. Some states have passed laws that make it as much an offense as drunk driving. So, stay awake out there, people!
