Rule No.5

Rule No.5
Avoid Left Turns.

This sounds impossible. (If you're in the U.K, substitute right for left). The reason I include this rule is that people making left turns on a busy highway or street cause unintentional accidents. It's much easier to make a right turn because you're not crossing lanes of traffic.

I'm not talking about making left turns at intersections with traffic lights or stop signs. That's a different situation because there are means to make the turn safely. Usually, there's a left turn lane provided or at least a left turn signal.

What I'm talking about is people coming out of a driveway on a busy street and trying to make a left turn across more than two lanes. During rush hour, this is madness, but it doesn't stop people from trying. If you're driving in the left lane and traffic is stopped in the right lane, you probably won't see a driver coming out of a driveway on the right between two stopped cars. That's why I slow up in a situation like that. I want to make sure that I can stop just in case. Most drivers speed up to run the light rather than thinking about what might happen. They don't have a feel for anticipation.

Anticipation is one of the most important attributes of driving. In most cases, an experienced driver will sense when a situation is dangerous and make adjustments. It's literally built into his or her brain. Achieving this useful skill takes experience.

The best way to avoid this problem is to look for ways to make right turns or at least try to make left turns at an intersession with a light. This is especially a good idea when traffic is heavy. If the traffic is light, go ahead and make the left turn from an unsecured location.

I think it's a good practice when coming up to a driveway and there's a red traffic light ahead to leave vehicles out, especially if they're turning right. It's only common courtesy, and in many cases will prevent an accident.
The laws in most places require that a vehicle making a left turn wait until it's safe. In other words, a left lane turning car driver will be held liable for an accident. The only exceptions to this rule are if the other driver is speeding or running a light.

Left turn accidents occur everyday, so it pays to avoid left turns if possible.

Thanks for reading.
