#1 how to draw/color a dragon bust (digital)
Eyyy everyone read the title? Good.
Suggested by wolfieandsandy ^^
It was literally "ANYTHING!"
Hope you're satisfied =D
Step 1.
Draw a circle slightly above and to the left of the canvas/paper. If you're doing it traditionally, make the circle light.
Step 2.
Draw the snout shape, roughly the shape of a rectangle and on the lower part of the circle. The length and thickness can change from dragon to dragon.
Step 3.
Outline the head. Make the lines a darker than the guidelines. (If you're doing it traditionally this is where you should probably erase the circle.)
Step 4.
Draw the ear and make the bottom touch the jawline. I did an enlarged shape of the ear for you :3
Step 5.
Draw the horn(s). The shape, length, number of the horn(s) is up to you.
Step 6.
Draw the eye, nostril, and mouth (I wrote 'eyes' on that thing haha). I went for a happy dragon for this one, but the mouth and eye shape is up to you as well.
Tip: wide eyes usually indicate a strong emotion unless it's anger. If your dragon is angry, you make the eye all squinty.
Step 7.
Draw the neck. It's not easy to perfect the shape the first time, so erase as you go. Make sure the thickness of the neck is even all the way through. Otherwise you'll have a very goofy looking dragon
Step 8.
Details! (More or less). Add whatever characteristics you want to add. I gave this dragon fur. Also, this is a good place to add an expression line (eyebrow, whatever). This is very important if you want your dragon to be experiencing emotion. Tilt the line up, and the expression gets softer. Tilt it down and it gets harsher/stronger. The distance between the eye and the eyebrow line (yes let's call it that, shall we) matter too.
But maybe I'll do more about that in another tutorial.
Step 9.
Erase the guidelines and/or do the lineart/ touch ups. If you're doing it traditionally, it could have been hard to erase all the little lines, so I told you to do it before in step 3.
Now, if you're like me and are too lazy to do proper line art, just make the sketch look smoother by erasing the tiny lines that stick out and making the main lines thicker and darker. This is generally what drawing traditionally is like.
If you have to do lineart (your sketch has too many stray lines, you are a perfectionist, etc.) pull up a new layer, reduce the opacity of the sketch layer, and do your best to create straight, neat lines. I have no tips for you because I suck at straight, neat lines, but practicing a lot probably helps.
Step 10.
Color!
Now this is fun.
I have a few tips.
1: there are many neat color palettes on the internet, and if you can't cough up a good one yourself, use one that's already made.
2: once the base colors are done, slap in some cool patterns and colors to make your dragon more interesting! Gradients are always great, so are dots :3. If the coloring is cool enough, no one will look at your bad lineart quality (hopefully).
3: if you're doing things digitally, make sure to alpha lock your coloring layer so things don't get messy.
4: if you're doing things traditionally, start with the light colors
(P.s I used the watercolor brush for the patterns)
Step 11.
Color the lineart (sort of optional).
(Now, you can't do this traditionally. What I suggest instead, is to get a black pen/brush pen/marker/etc and go over the outlines where the details kind of fade away. This helps make your piece look sharper and neater.)
Alpha lock your lineart layer, than take a color darker than the color you used for the section of dragon you're working on, and color away. This will make it so that the black lineart doesn't pop too much, especially if your dragon is a light color.
If your lineart is thin (gosh how do you do it??) than you probably don't need this, and if it's your style to have thick, black lineart, than you don't need this either.
That's all! Hurray! You have successfully drawn a dragon bust! (Hopefully).
I'll do the shading in a different tutorial lol
I hope you could get something done with my ramble-y explanations! If you have any questions just ask, and see ya next time!
