Chapter 8 - The Masked Man

The next day, I had slept in a little later than I intended. I slowly opened my eyes and yawned. "I wonder where Menma is?" I mumbled. I got out of bed and headed to the living room. I expected to find Menma there, but he wasn't.

"Menma?" I called. I walked towards the exit and spotted Menma outside, looking at the sky. He has his mask on and looked as if he was deep in thought. Hey, why is he wearing the mask, anyway?

"Hey!" I screamed out when someone grabbed the back of my kimono and lifted me off the ground. "Hey, what's the big idea?! Put me down!" I yelled. "Who are you?" The person who was holding me asked.

"I'm the one who should be asking the questions! Let go of me!" I yelled again. "You're in no position to give me orders,"

'I'm so ready to bite this guy.' I thought, angrily. "Ears and a tail, huh? You must be a pet of Menma's." They said.

"Like hell I am! I'm nobody's pet! Let me go already, you creep!"

"Such a mouth you have on you. Perhaps we should rip out that tongue of yours."

"No!"

"Stop,"

I looked at Menma as he stood near the entrance of the house. "Let her go, Madara." Menma ordered. "Madara?" I repeated. That name sounds familiar. "I see you've gotten yourself a pet." The man known as Madara said. "She's not a pet. Now, let her go." Menma repeated.

"Hmph," Madara dropped me to the floor and I ran over to Menma, hiding behind him. I saw that this Madara person was wearing a black cloak along with an orange swirly mask. "Where'd you find this little furball?" He asked as he kneeled down to my height to get a better look at me.

I stuck my tongue out at him and Menma placed his hand on my head. "I found her washed up near the shore. She had no other place to go, so I took her in." Menma explained. "You shouldn't keep pets if they're useless." Madara mentioned, glancing at him before standing up.

"I'm gonna beat the shit out of you!" I snapped. "Kitsune," Menma pulled me behind him to prevent further conflict with Madara. "Madara... Kitsune isn't useless." Menma defended. "Oh? So, you're saying she's a ninja then?" He asked.

"In a way. Why are you here, anyway? What do you want?"

"There's something we need to discuss. In private."

"Very well. Kitsune, leave us for a moment."

"Aww, but I wanna stay!" I whined. "Just wait outside the temple. Here," I gasped when Menma summoned a white tiger and two men. One of them looked kind of scary because he was dressed as the Grim Reaper and all of them wore a mask similar to the one Menma was wearing.

"So cool!" I cheered. "In case anything happens out there, they'll protect you." Menma said. I gave a nod and I walked outside the temple with the three summonings following behind me. I sat in the grass  as I stared into the pond and watched two koi fish swim around each other.

I poked at the water, breaking their cycle, and sighed before looking back at the summonings who were watching me. "So... How long have you guys been with Menma?" I asked, awkwardly. They didn't answer as they just stared at me.

"Don't you guys have names? Can you even talk at all?" I asked. Once again, they remained silent as they stared at me. I sighed and lied down in the grass. Just what are they talking about in there? And who is Madara? Is he friend of Menma's or something?

"Ugggghhhh! The curiosity's killing me! I've gotta figure out what they're talking about it there!" I yelled while rolling around on the grass. But I can't just walk in there. Menma will kick me out or these three summonings will just stop me.

Hmm... What would I do? Maybe I could lie to the summonings? But would they buy it? Probably not. They're probably as smart as Menma. Damm. Perhaps I could reason with them? I shrugged my shoulders and turned towards the tiger.

"Hey, can you give me a lift to the roof?" I asked it. It just stared me, making me feel weird. "Uh... Can you even understand me?" I asked. Instead of responding like I thought it would, the tiger turned around.

"Huh?" I stared at him as a question mark floated over my head. "Oh, I get it! You want me to climb onto your back!" I said. The tiger gave a nod and I climbed onto its back. Once I was on, the tiger was on the roof of the temple in a single leap.

"Incredible. I had no idea you could do that in one jump," I said in amazement. "Then again, there's a lot of things I don't know about these guys or Menma." I climbed off the tiger and looked over the entrance of the temple, almost hanging upside down.

I looked around until I found Menma and that Madara guy. "I see. So that's her situation. She's from an alternate universe that somehow managed to get sucked in seven years into the future of this world. Sounds like a whole mouthful." Madara said.

"Until I can find a way to get her back to her world, she'll be staying with me." Menma explained. For some reason, Madara chuckled a low chuckle. "What's so funny?" Menma asked. "Just what I was gonna say." I mumbled.

"If you're going to keep her as a pet-"

"She's not a pet. Refer to her as my guest." Menma interrupted him. "Fine," Madara rolled his eyes. "As your "guest", I believe it's necessary to have her well-trained for the next part of the plan. That is if she's as useful as you say she is." He said.

"Plan?" I repeated in a whisper as I narrowed my eyes. "What plan? What the hell are they talking about?"

"Kitsune is not a weapon. Keep her out of this." Menma said. "If she's not your pet and you're not using her for a weapon, what's the point of keeping her? She's just another useless animal." Madara insulted.

"Animal, huh?" I whispered with a frown. I should've just made myself deaf just to save myself from hearing the insults. "Then, what are you trying to say here, Madara? Are you suggesting I get rid of Kitsune and just focus on this plan of yours?" Menma asked.

I gasped and quickly covered my mouth with my hand. "Of course." Madara replied. "Sure, whatever." Menma said. "I knew it," I sat up and walked towards the ledge. "I knew he'd get rid of me sooner or later."

Menma was probably only pretending to be nice to me so he could get rid of me earlier. And all that crap about it's not in his nature to harm animals. But I bet it's his nature to throw them out. I'm such a fool. I was deceived by someone else's kindness again.

The wind gently blew against my face before lowering my head. "Life. Death. Neither of them matter to me anymore. This world is better off without me, anyway." I mumbled. I took a step off the roof and let my body fall.

Unfortunately, I didn't fall like I planned as the white tiger summoning caught the back of my kimono with its teeth. "The hell?! Let go of me, dammit!" I snapped as I squirmed in its grasp. But it refused to let go.

"I said. Let. Go!" I gave my body a hard jerk and the tiger released me from its grip. I gasped when I started falling again and just closed my eyes, waiting to hit the ground.

But fate decided otherwise when the Shinigami summoning grabbed me in midair and skidded to a stop on the ground. "What the hell was that for?! Can't you see I'm trying to commit suicide?!" I yelled at him.

He only stared at me as he continued to hold me in his arms. I sighed. "Just forget it. You can't even reply, anyway." I mumbled. I lowered my head so my bangs covered my eyes and the Shinigami summoning set me down on my feet.

"It doesn't even matter, anyway. I'm just a freak who needs taking care of," I mumbled. I crouched down and hugged my knees to my chest.

"I don't belong anywhere."
