Chapter 13 - Festival Fun
It's been about... what, a year and a half since I came into this world?
Ugh, I feel so bored. Before you say it, no, I'm not feeling homesick. Nowhere near it.
I just feel like there's nothing to do. Actually, there's absolutely nothing to do in this place. "Menma!" I burst through his bedroom and jumped on his bed. "Menma! Menma!" I yelled. "Mmm..." Menma mumbled, angrily.
He took his pillow he was laying on and put it over his head. "Menma, wake up! Wake up!" I yelled. I grabbed another pillow and began hitting it over his sleeping figure over and over. "Men-ma! Men-ma!" I yelled every time I hit him with the pillow.
"Kitsune, I'm trying to sleep. What do you want?" He said from beneath the pillow. "I'm bored! And I wanna see what your village is like in this world!" I said, stopping my assault. "Village? The Leaf Village?" He asked with the pillow still over his head.
"Of course!" I answered. Even though his voice was muffled, I could still hear him and his sleepy voice. "Why do you wanna go there? I thought you hated humans?" Menma asked.
"This world is different from my world, right? Basically, the opposite. So, I wanna see how opposite it is. Let me see what it's like!" I practically begged.
"No way."
"What?! But why?!"
"Because I don't want to and I'm tired."
"Come on! Pretty please? I won't bother you anymore."
"I don't... mind if you bother me."
"What?"
"What?!"
Menma quickly sat up and looked at me as I noticed his whole face was red. "Menma, you're face in red." I informed. Menma's face turned into an even darker red and hid himself under the covers. "Huh?" A question mark hovered over my head in confusion.
'Eh. I think I'll brush that off for now.' I thought with a shrug. "Menma, take me to the village! I wanna see what it's like! Please, please, please, plea- Mmh!"
Menma threw the pillow at me, making me fall off the bed. "Fine. How about this?" Menma said. I took the pillow off my face and sat up. "I'm listening." I stated.
"Tomorrow, the Leaf Village will be holding a festival like they do every year. If it means that much to you, then we'll go to the festival so you can see how different this world is different compared to yours." Menma explained.
"Yay!" I jumped on Menma and hugged his neck. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I cheered. "You're welcome. Now, can I go back to sleep?" He asked as he pulled the blanket over his head. "Yeah, you can go back to sleep. I'm gonna go climb some trees." I informed.
Menma raised his hand and waved, like he was saying, "Do what you want." or "Whatever."
(The Next Day)
"Yes! Today's the day!" I cheered, childishly. Tonight is the night of the festival and I'm totally excited! "Menma! Come on, let's go! The festival's gonna start soon!" I called as I burst into his room. He was lying in bed, sound asleep. Or should I say was sound asleep.
"Menma, get up!" I yelled. "Kitsune, it's still early. Go back to bed." Menma mumbled, sleepily. "But what about the festival?!" I whined, pouting. "It doesn't start until later on tonight. Plus, the sun is still out, so they're probably just getting ready for tonight." He explained.
I sighed, disappointedly as my ears went down. "Then, what should I do until then?" I asked. "Did you eat?" Menma asked. "Yes." I answered."
"Did you train?"
"Yes."
"Did you go for a walk?"
"Yes."
"Did you take a nap."
"A half hour ago. Now I'm bursting with energy!"
The room went silent for a moment until I sighed. "I guess I could do this until tonight." I said. I walked over to Menma and laid down beside him. "Going back to sleep, I take it?" Menma asked.
"I'll try. With your warmth, I'm pretty sure I'll be out in a few minutes. Besides, I like being around you." I mentioned.
I tried falling asleep, but I was so anxious for it to be nightfall, I was practically shaking in my fur with anticipation. At least until I finally fell asleep.
*Time skip*
The time finally came as the sun descended. Menma was dressed in a men's traditional yukata while I was dressed in a pink floral kimono that Menma made. "Should I hide my ears?" I asked him. "Why?" He questioned.
"Because... well, y'know..." I said, making my ears twitch. "I don't think you need to worry about humans looking at your ears. This is a festival we're going to, so I'm pretty sure they'll just think your ears are fake and part of an accessory," Menma said before picking up his fox mask off the dresser.
"However, I have to go into hiding with this mask. If the villagers take one look at me, then they'll definitely recognize me as the criminal Tsunade is looking for."
"What gives you that idea? What'd you do?" I asked. "I kidnapped and killed the Two-Tails, Yugito Nii." He said. "Oh... Then, I guess it would be best if you hide your face." I replied.
Menma gave a nod in agreement and put his mask on. "Ready to go?" He asked. "Yeah." I nodded. Menma and I walked out of the temple and headed towards the Leaf Village Festival. I'm pretty glad that it was a semi-long walk.
I know some of the kids from the village go out into the woods to either train or play hide-and-seek, and it always made me nervous because I wasn't sure if they'd find Menma's hideout.
Thankfully, Menma informed me that temple was far off from the village, so it was impossible for anyone to spot it.
When we finally got to the village, I saw a lot of people dressed up kind of seasonal as some playing games. "This looks amazing!" I cheered. "Is this your first festival?" Menma asked. "Uh-huh," I answered with a nod. "Look! Dangos! Let's go get some!"
As I ran over, I accidentally bumped into someone. "Hey-! Huh?" The man looked at me and smiled. "Nice ears. Where'd you get 'em?" He asked "I... um... Well..." I stumbled on my words as I didn't know what to say.
I mean, how do you explain to someone how these ears are real and not fake? "Hello? Anybody there?" The man waved his hand in front of my face. "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" He asked. "I... I, uh..."
I don't feel so good. My head is spinning and my throat is dry. "O... kay, then? See you later, I guess." The man said before leaving. My heart was pounding heavily as I felt like hyperventilating. "Kitsune," Menma said as he walked over to me. "Are you okay?"
"Uh... yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." I said in an unsettled tone. I looked at the ground as I tried to calm down. I got so scared, I was pretty sure that man was got get scared and call me names. "Kitsune," I looked at Menma as he held out his hand to me.
I raised a brow and looked at his hand, then at him. "Take my hand." He instructed "What for?" I asked. "So, you won't get lost. You run pretty fast and tend to get lost easily." He answered. I blushed out of embarrassment and took his hand.
I wasn't even gonna argue with on this one because he was right.
Menma and I walked around, enjoying the scenery and the festival itself. We also played some games and I won myself a fox mask, plus some candy. There was also a few games that I lost to and I couldn't help but feel angry and embarrassed.
Finally, the time came for the fireworks. Everyone huddled near the lake and watched the sky as the fireworks went off into the starry night. To make the scenery even better, there was a bright and beautiful full moon shining right above us.
"So pretty..." I said in amazement. "Yeah, they sure are pretty." Menma agreed. I looked at him and smiled, then looked back at the fireworks. "I'm going to get us some crepes. I'll be right back." Menma informed. "Okay." I said, and he left.
I continued to gaze at the fireworks until I noticed a little boy looking at me. "Mommy, Mommy! Look. That girl has funny-looking ears on her head!" The boy said as he tugged his mother's kimono sleeve.
My ears went up in alarm and I immediately got nervous. I backed up, trying to get out of the little boy's sight, but I ended up backing up into the someone.
"Hey, watch where you're going!" A man yelled as he shoved me forward. "O-Oh, I'm sorry!" I quickly apologized as I backed away from him. But I backed up into a woman. "Hey!" She snapped. "I'm sorry!" I repeated, backing away from her.
I tripped over someone's foot and fell on the ground. Now everyone's eyes were on me. All of them stared at me like I was some wild animal in a cage.
"What are those things on her head?"
"She looks weird."
"Just what the hell is she?"
"Are they real?"
"What a freak."
"How disgusting."
My eyes widened as I listened to them. "No... Please stop... Please don't say those things..." I pleaded. I covered my head as I tried to drown out their insults, but it didn't work. Then, I started to hear the villagers laugh.
They were laughing at me, laughing at my ears. "I can't help it... I didn't ask to be born like this... Please stop laughing..." I pulled my knees to my chest as the laughing got louder. "Leave me alone!" I yelled.
I sprinted out of the crowd and into the woods.
Menma's POV
After I got the food, I went back into the crowd to find Kitsune. I looked around, but I couldnt spot her anywhere. "Strange. Where did she go?" I mumbled. I walked further into the crowd and found Kitsune's mask that she won lying on the ground.
"Why is this on the ground?" I asked. The next thing I spotted were footprints. They were definitely Kitsune's footprints. It took me a second to put the pieces together, but I figured it out.
Something must've happened between her and one of the villagers, triggering an anxiety attack and causing her to run off. Not good. I've gotta find her before she does she something she regrets. I abandoned the food and followed Kitsune's tracks into the woods.
