Chapter 12 - Smile, Menma!

"Kitsune!"

"In here!"

Menma walked inside the living room as he was dressed in black sweatpants and black ninja shoes. His body was covered in sweat from the intense training he was doing outside.

Hey, I didn't spy on him while he was doing his pull-ups from a tree branch if that's what you're thinking! ....Okay, maybe I did! But I only gave a small peek!

"What's wrong, Menma?" I asked. "One of my foxes are missing." He said. "Your summoning?" I asked. "Yes. Have you seen it anywhere?" Menma asked.

"Nope." I answered, shaking my head. "Oh, really? What's that you're hiding behind your back?" He asked, frowning. "What do you mean?" I asked, innocently. "Show me your hands." Menma ordered. I grinned and showed him my right hand.

"I said, your hands. Meaning, both of them." He said. I gulped and hesitantly showed him my other hand. When I did that, the fox I was hiding jumped out from behind my back and shook itself off. "Hehe... Oops." I said with a nervous smile.

I scratched the back of my head sheepishly as Menma sighed. "Exactly, why did you summon the fox?" He asked. "Because I wanted something to cuddle with." I answered, truthfully.

"And you decided to cuddle my summoning?

"Uh-huh."

"Why?"

"Because they're just so cuddly."

"You are such a kid."

I frowned and stuck my tongue out at him. "If I'm a kid, then you're a irresponsible guardian." I stated. "Yeah, for sure." Menma replied, sarcastically. "Hey, it's your own fault for teaching me how to summon these cuddly animals." I defended.

"I taught you the technique in case you're ever in any trouble. Not so you could cuddle with them. What surprises me a bit is that you were able to get one of them into their true form." Menma mentioned.

I picked up the small fox summoning and hugged it to my chest as my tail swayed from side to side. "Hey, don't I get a reward?" I asked. "A reward?" Menma repeated. "For what?"

"For telling you where your fox was. I could've just lied and told you it ran off somewhere." I stated. "But you did lie." He mentioned. "Yeah, but I didn't tell you it ran off," I replied. "I still think I should get a reward."

Menma stared at me for a moment, then walked over to me and kneeled down. I didn't say anything as I stared into blue eyes. It started getting awkward as Menma continued to stare at me without saying a word.

"Uh... Aren't you gonna say anything?" I asked. Menma responded by kissing my nose, making my face turn completely red. "Is that the reward you were looking for?" He asked. "Not at all! I was hoping for meat! Or having permission to cuddle the fox summoning again!" I said.

"Yeah, that's not gonna happen. And don't be so dramatic."

"How can I not be?! You kissed me!"

"I only kissed your nose, and could you lower your voice? You almost sound like you're freaking out."

"I am freaking out!" It's because he's not supposed to kiss someone unless he really likes them. Wait, does Menma like me?

"Kitsune," Menma said, poking my forehead. "What happened? You zoned out for a second there. What are you thinking about?"

"Food," I lied. "Can I have some meat?"

"Later. For dinner. Did you practice the techniques I taught you?"

"No."

"Be sure to do that before dinner."

"-_- Are you my sensei now?"

"You know what they say: Better to be safe than sorry."

I raised the small fox summoning out in front of me and looked at it. "How do you put up with him?" I asked it. It didn't answer as it stared at me before tilting his head to the side. I sighed at it, then made it return to the summoning world.

"You know what you're problem is, Menma?" I mentioned. "What?" He asked, walking towards the kitchen. "You don't smile as often." I said.

"Smile?" Menma asked. "Yeah. You don't smile a whole lot." I repeated from the living room. "Did you have sake today?" He asked, bluntly. "Come on, Menma! I'm being serious! You need to learn to smile more often!" I yelled.

"Oh? And why should I?" Menma asked as he went into the fridge. He took out two bottles of water, tossed one over to me, and I caught it with one hand. "Because you'll be less stressed!" I answered, twisting the top off.

"Who says I'm stressed?"

"Your facial expression says it all. Come on, let me see you smile!"

Menma rolled his eyes and started walking down the hall. "Just go take a nap or something, Kitsune." He said. I smirked at his request and followed him down the hall. "Surprise attack!" I yelled out as I jumped on Menma's back.

"Hey!" He said, nearly dropping his water bottle. "What do you think you're doing?!"

"You said, or something." I stated. "I said, go take a nap." Menma said. "Yeah, and or something." I pointed out. "And you decided to jump on my back?" He asked. "Yep." I grinned. "You're so childish." Menma said, bluntly. "I know. Ugh..."

I slid off his back and onto the floor. "I'm soooo borrrreeeedddd." I whined. "And what can I do to make you not feel bored?" Menma asked. "Well~... Since you asked~," I sang, sitting up. "You could smile for me."

"No, thanks." He said, resuming to walk down the hallway. "You're no fun, Menma!" I yelled as I threw my water bottle at him. It hit him in the back of the head, making him stop in his tracks. My eyes widened slightly as I immediately regretted my actions.

"Uh... Menma?" I asked. He didn't answer as he just stood there with his back facing me. "Hehe... Look, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to do that." I apologized with a nervous chuckle. "I'm afraid you're too late for apologies, Kitsune." Menma said in a deadly tone.

I felt my hair stand up when Menma slowly turned around to face me. "Run." Menma said. 'He doesn't have to tell me twice!' I thought as I quickly made a run for it. To no surprise, Menma chased after me.

He chased me from the living room, to the kitchen, from down the hall, and into the bathroom. I practically knocked the door down as I burst into the room. I tripped on my own feet and fell right into the bathtub.

But I didn't expect to get wet as the tub was filled with warm water. I sat up in the tub and coughed while spitting some water out of my mouth. Menma ran in and spotted me in the tub before bursting out laughing.

"What are you laughing at?" I asked, frowning. "You making a fool out of yourself." He said, chuckling. "Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up, Menma. Laugh it up," I mumbled. "Why the hell is the bath filled with water, anyway?!" I yelled.

"I was planning on taking a bath." Menma said, wiping a tear from his right eye. I childishly stuck my tongue out at him because of how he thought this was funny. "On the bright side, at least you're clean." He joked.

"Yeah, haha. Very funny. Can you help me up please?"

"Sure."

Menma extended his hand and helped me out of the tub. "Hey, I got you to smile!" I said. "Yep. While being able to get yourself wet." He mentioned, making me roll my eyes. "Shut up." I grumbled. "Come on, let's get you dried off." Menma said. "Yeah." I agreed.

We went to Menma's room so I could dry off as he helped me dry my ears. "Hey, what's got you so quiet? Are you mad at me?" I asked. "No, it's not that. I was just thinking... about how long it's been since I've laughed that hard." Menma said, saying the last part quietly.

I glanced back at him with a smile, then leaned my back against his chest.

"Kitsune?"

"Don't worry, I'm fine. I'm just happy that I was able to get you to smile."

I blushed softly when Menma wrapped his arms around me and rested his chin on my head. "I'm happy, too." He said. I closed my eyes with content and relaxed against his hold.
