Chapter 4 Part 11 A Period in Simon's Life

The first period is always the best. Everyone is fresh, although no one knows how to lift their hand to answer a question. Few of us have a non-existent social life and can answer whenever. The only time the popular students get to listen to us and also be quiet is when we answering questions.

Win-win situations.

It is revision time and classes are more relaxed for some. There are those who walk around with faces that read, we are writing today. This is the time for more raised hands than the entire class combined throughout the year. Exams are upon us and looking around, I can see fear on some students' faces. I am yet to face fear in life but writing exams did not make me have sleepless nights.

Vin: Wow! Relax man, you know it is still morning, right? All I wanted to hear was morning from you.

Simon: Never make plans on a Friday. You know the drill by now, man.

Vin: Sometimes I forget I am friends with the popular guys in school. Yeah, you are right. Never dismiss such words from someone who says you are right because there will be many in your life who say that you are wrong. Class is about to start, and Zaid is nowhere to be seen. He is never late.

There goes the bell again.

We proceeded to class slowly, to get the last random seats. The idea of being early is to choose, but we avoided decision-making. Let life decide for us.

Entering the class, chaos, everyone is everywhere, and no teacher. Everyone sitting in groups, screaming at each other. Others singing and dancing. One student came running towards us, catching his breath.

Student: Did you guys hear what happened to Zaid? There was an ambulance at his house last night and they had to rush him to the hospital.

He kept running after those words with no further explanation.

Must be first-period energy. Wait till that detention hits us in the afternoon if they keep this up. I turned my attention to Vin and simultaneously we turned around and rushed to the principal office.

Vin: We would like to see the principal, please.

Secretary: He is busy. Are you boys not supposed to be in class?

Simon: Please, it's urgent.

Secretary: Oh Simon, I did not see you there. You may go in.

Simon: Thank you. Principal, may we please go to the hospital? Our friend is there.

Principal: No, go back to class because his parents are there, and tell your classmates to keep quiet. I can hear them all the way from here unless they want detention after school.

We did exactly what the principal said, without any arguments, and the class went quiet when we told them what the principal said. We left immediately and headed for the sports field. The hospital is near the school and no principal will come between us.

Being seen and called back is the only thing we fear, but as I mentioned, repeat offenders understand not to return once spotted unless their name is called. The mistake is not jumping the fence; it is going back. The punishment for trying to escape school or prison, for that matter, depends on how you look at it.

Severe!

The easiest part is always running away.

We ran to the fence and continued until the school could not catch up with us. We didn't see it anymore as we turned the corner. Arriving at the hospital out of breath, the security and nurses outside questioned us for a few minutes.

"Hello, what is the emergency?" The nurse asked.

"Oh nothing, we are just here to visit a friend, please!" I replied.

"It is not visiting hours but come with me only because you said the magic word as she finished her cigarette,"

The door opened and a stench of blood made Vin turn around instantaneously. I just kept following the nurse until we reached a corridor and she said the number 051 with no further instruction. She is as cold as this place; I guess. A hospital is like an introduction to horror scenes, silent with the occasional scream here and there.

A door opened in front of me while I passed 047.

"Hi Simon, why are you not at school? What are you doing here?" Mr Jenkins asked.

"Good day Sir. We heard about Zaid and rushed over to hear what was wrong with him," I responded.

"Thank you for coming. He is alright, and you need to go back to school or there will be trouble," Mr Jenkins said.

I was left disappointed. School was also almost over, so there was no rush to return. The entire way back was quiet. We visibly had the same expression but not the same feeling.

"I could not see him. There is definitely something seriously wrong with him," I said.

"Do not say that," Vin responded.

Everywhere we went would get us in trouble today. Friday is supposed to be our good day, after all. Vin turned off and took another way, his expression still similar to mine but probably still from the hospital smell.

I took the way back to school. There is no way I can explain being home early.

You can never be outside the gate during the week, but Friday was usually full of people waiting for someone or for the bell to ring. I joined the cue because I needed to see Shareen before my weekend starts because Monday is so far.
