Chapter 12 (AKA The Fallout...?)
*FGOD Multiverse AKA DeterminedVerse (Like their paths are determined by a higher power)*
Nightmare looks at Killer, who is practically broken to the point where the former no longer has to push his emotions down, the latter is just numb to everything. Dust didn't fare much better, breaking everything in the rooms. Horror hasn't left the kitchen. And Nightmare? He doesn't know what that sudden and intense feeling of losing something important was, but if he had to guess, it was Error. Something major happened to Error, something that the Evil Sansi couldn't stop.
A knock sounds on the front door of the rather empty castle, Killer slowly standing up and walking to the door, zombie-like in his movements. Killer gasps, a massive blaster appearing above the skeleton. Nightmare rushes forward, freezing.
A very guilty looking Dream and Color are standing on their front porch, looking at the ground.
"Killer, wait. Let's see what they have to say." Nightmare pulls Killer away from the door and calls Dust and Horror from their rampages.
~Ten Minutes Later~
Nightmare is sitting on the regular couch, in his passive form. Killer is sitting near the King of Negativity, dead eyelights staring at the two newcomers. Dust is sharpening his bone attack. Horror's ax is sitting within grabbing and launching reach of the unstable cannibalistic skeleton.
Dream gulps, Color looking down at his hands.
"W-well...um...Error...we fought him. We were with Ink. Ink ordered all the Sansi in the group to fire a blaster at Error at the same time...but...he was still standing. He was mostly whole...It was terrifying..."
Dream looks at Color, sweat starting to drip down the 'positive' half of the DreamTale universe.
"And Error spoke about how we're so willing to condemn Destruction, but openly accept Death...even though the two share the same half of the balance." Color grips his shorts, but Dream continues, stumbling over his words.
"We didn't do it-We didn't kill him-Don't get mad at us-We were just following orders-"
"Dream. Calm down. And tell me what happened to Error." Nightmare leans forward, his voice obviously having an effect on his 'brother'. Dream takes a deep breath, nodding.
"Error opened a portal below him to the Void. He...fell in...he killed himself..." Dream starts sobbing, and Killer screams again, hugging his sides, crying real tears. Horror, the gruesome skeleton who never vomits at blood or gore or death, turns his head away from furniture and vomits. Dust snaps his bone attack in half, stiffly walking back upstairs, gaster blaster sounds coming from the area Dust is in. And Nightmare?
All time stops for him, for just a moment.
Error...dead?
Memories flash of every moment Nightmare caught Error trying to take his own life. Noose after noose, knife slash after knife slash, hundreds of bottles of pills, thousands of full bathtubs and unconscious Errors...
And the Void was the thing that was required to bring the Destroyer to death...?
Nightmare transforms into his goopy form, standing up and leaving the castle, Dream close behind him. Nightmare takes a walk, ending up standing in front of the dead tree.
"I'm sorry, Brot-"
"Just...be quiet...let me stand here for a while...okay?" Dream blinks, standing beside Nightmare, a sad smile covering his face.
"Remember when we used to live together, and everyone looked up to us..."
"You. They looked up to you. They despised me. I guess when you were too blinded by the sun to see my darkness until it was too late." Dream looks down.
"It's ironic. You didn't learn the lesson then, and that caused the end of Error. Nobody ever thinks the evil things, Nightmares, Destruction, are necessary...yet they forget Death is a part of the dark trio. Nobody ever believes that we are necessary to maintain a balance, and so we go extreme, and people forget still." Nightmare closes his eyes, laughing, the goop dripping off his body.
"I just wish I could have saved him sooner..." Dream hugs Nightmare, and for the first time in a long time, Nightmare cries into Dream's shoulder, hugging him back.
Color sits, patting Killer's back gently. Color's gaze softens, noticing something.
Was Nightmare always protecting Killer from the painful emotions by removing the good ones? Is that a fair trade? And why did he release Killer's emotions? Is he too emotional to hold back another's emotions? Or was Error that instrumental in Killer's emotionlessness that without the Destroyer, Killer's emotions are free?
Killer lunges into Color, hugging him, soft sobs getting muffled by Color. Color hugs Killer back, looking at Horror, who looks at Color back.
Do all of these skeletons have bad situations that were forgotten and did that cause them to shift to Nightmare, having nobody else to ask for help from?
Color feels a painful emotion tug at his heart.
Did I fail them? Did Dream fail them? Did Ink fail them? We all did. I should have understood better than anyone that everyone is neutral, nobody is inherently good or evil, and intentions are everything. Dream failed them by following Ink blindly for so long...but Ink failed them by creating them and then calling them evil when they searched for help...any help...Ink is a terrible monster...
Dust comes back down from the rooms, tear streaks on his skull, but nobody says anything about anyone's tear tracks, having a silent agreement to not mention it.
They care for each other. They don't state it, but the way they allow each other to cry, and instead of saying anything mocking, they just ignore the signs of tears. They allow each other to keep pride intact even while mourning. They recognize the behaviors of the others of their group, being sure to know when things are off.
Color smiles bitterly internally.
That's better than the Star Sansi, who can barely keep it together before calling into question loyalties.
Dust sits beside Horror, the two silently comforting each other. Color looks at Killer, gently rubbing his skull.
Have any of these skeletons ever been shown love, not LOVE, have they ever been given affection?
Color sighs, standing up.
"We're gonna do some fun activities. We're not gonna forget Error. Tell me things he really loved."
"Chocolate."
"Knitting."
"Undernovela." Color nods.
"Dust, get some Chocolate, wherever he liked to get it from. Killer, you'll be in charge of finding things he knitted. Horror, you and I will work on bringing up UnderNovela, okay?" The three nod, going to their delegated tasks. Horror and Color get a hologram working, having UnderNovela set to play when they unpause it. Dust re-enters with Underfell Chocolate, and Killer comes back with a few things Error knitted. Color smiles.
"Now, we're gonna watch his favorite show, eating his favorite food, and then we're gonna try knitting while telling stories we love of Error, okay?" The three skeletons nod and Color starts the AU's 'episodes', the four watching the show, eating the chocolate. Dream and Nightmare walk in as Dust, Horror, Killer, and Color are laughing, knitting, while Killer is pulling an Error accent.
"-And then Error was like "Well then...Nightmare broke the chandelier, so it must be okay to destroy stuff." And you know what he did?" Color raises an eyebrow.
"What?"
"He ripped a wall apart, and pulled out some sort of food, a pie I think, and he just started a food fight, in the middle of the Living Room/Dining Room. We had to clean the area for a week, but it was SO Worth it. Even Nightmare played the game and had fun. Error was always capable of seeing what situations needed brightening up...he was invaluable to the sanity of many of us." Color smiles at Horror, who blushes softly.
"All...Error didn't treat me like a horrible monster for eating humans...he understood...I never asked and he never stopped...he brought me and my brother weekly...so we'd never be hungry. Error cared about our needs, and as long as we never asked what he was giving us, he'd keep doing it. We were so hungry, we didn't care what we were eating...and we were more than thankful...Error kept my brother alive with food weekly...he made sure Pap...he made sure there was enough." Dust smiles, gently touching his bone attack.
"Error was a wonderful sparring partner. Not only could he not be killed, but he also had insane defense and HP. He was powerful too. He made us all better, but he helped me hone my insanity from the LOVE into a weapon too. He helped me to be better at communicating...and actually started the friendship between myself and Horror."
"Error was a good friend, and even though he never strictly aligned himself with my group, he always was willing to help us, heal wounds he knew how to use a first aid kit on. He was instrumental in shaping each of us." Color looks at Nightmare.
"We've been remembering Error. Watched UnderNovela, ate UnderFell Chocolate, and knitted while listening to stories of Error..." Dream smiles sadly.
"I wish I could have known him better." Nightmare nods sadly, sitting beside Dust. Dream takes the seat nearest Nightmare, and the remembering of Error continues late into the night, the castle rocking with laughter and tears.
