The New Chapter 1
This is the rewritten version! No worries!
Also, I'll put a list at the end of the colours and clothes each bitty chose, as well as a drawing of the apartment building and a general map of the mansion, plus each bitty's favourite soda.
----------
I'd always wanted a bitty. Just one bitty. Or maybe two. I decided I would get a skeleton bitty, because they were such a diverse group. I figured a Classic Sansy would be best, since we both liked puns, food, and sleeping.
The nearest bitty center I knew of was Mama Cry's Bitty Adoption Center, so I thought I'd head there to see if any bitties caught my eye. Since I enjoyed walking, I decided to walk the two or so miles between the center and my house. Of course, I somehow managed to take a wrong turn somewhere, so I was now in a shady-looking alley. A sign was hung on the door in front of me. 'Bitty Store,' it read in sloppy handwriting.Well, one bitty center was as good as another, right? I decided to take a chance and entered the 'store'.
An old man, sitting behind a worn table, greeted me. "What d'ya want?" he asked gruffly.
"A Classic Sansy. 100g," I replied, keeping an equal amount of gruffness in my tone. The room we were in was grimy, with empty bird cages hanging from the ceiling. It gave me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.
The man left for a moment, going through a door marked 'Bittys' in the same sloppy handwriting. He returned with a small skeleton, clad in some sort of makeshift clothing that looked like it was made from a very tattered hoodie and shorts. A thick black collar was around the skeleton's neck.
The man plunked the skeleton onto the table, before reclaiming his seat. "What's the collar for?" I asked, motioning to the skeleton's neck. "It's a shock collar, but it'll also shock the bitty if it tries to use magic. Unfortunately, I haven't found a cheap one that'll get rid of the talking, but I just shock 'em manually and that seems to work fine," came the reply. I suppressed a shudder and inspected the bitty.
He did indeed seem to be a Classic Sansy, though there were other things I noticed as well. His bones looked chalky and fragile, a good indicator that he wasn't getting fed properly. His posture and gaze made it clear that he was expecting to get hurt, but the hope that he would finally get a good home wasn't fully extinguished. I could see a few scars and burn marks around the collar.
"Does he speak?" I directed the question towards the man, but continued looking at the bitty. "Unfortunately. I've heard some like their bitties to be talkative, though." I nodded. "More entertaining that way," I said, careful not to appear too disdainful or sympathetic. I reached towards the bitty, but stopped, glancing to the man for permission. He nodded, so I picked up the bitty, feeling him stiffen.
I made a show of inspecting him, turning him this way and that. "You really a Classic?" I quietly asked the bitty, who whispered a yes. Even quieter, I whispered, "I'm going to adopt you. You look like you'd like to bring someone along, though." The bitty finally allowed a hint of a smile to creep onto his face. He nodded.
"Can I see the bitty room? I want more than one," I asked the man, though it was more of a command. He nodded sharply and opened the door to what appeared to have once been a walk-in closet. Inside, there were about a dozen cages, though most were empty.
The bitty, who I had already nicknamed 'Classic' in my mind, pointed toward a cage with two bitties in it. One seemed to be a Fell Sansy and the other a Baby Blue? It was a bit hard to tell, since they wore the same sort of clothes as the Classic bitty. I opened the cage and reached for the Fell bitty first. He bit my hand almost immediately, but I didn't let go, so he bit me again. The man pressed a button on his remote and caused the bitty's collar to activate, making him yelp in pain and let go.
I placed him next to the Classic Sansy in my hand and grabbed the Baby Blue. "...Can I get, like, a box or something?" I asked. The man handed me a cat carrier. I put the two new bitties inside. "Any others?" I asked the Classic. He nodded and pointed to a small group of cages.
The first cage had two very similar-looking bitties inside that I pegged almost immediately as a Dream and a Nightmare Sansy. Upon noticing us, the Nightmare Sansy stepped protectively in front of his brother and tried to change to his corrupt form. Key word, tried. The shock collar went off at the slightest hint of goop, causing him to wince and fall to his knees. I scooped him and the Dream bitty up with one hand and placed them into the carrier. A shiny glint in the corner of the cage caught my eye. It was the signature crowns and staffs of Dream and Nightmare bitties. I tossed those into the carrier, too.
The next cage had four bitties in it. Three were obvious- Horror, Cross, and Killer Sansies. The last was not. I thought, perhaps, that he might be a Dust bitty, but I'd have to ask later. They had been watching us like hawks. "Boss!" I heard the Horror bitty call out softly as soon as it saw the Nightmare Sansy. They both rushed to the entrances of their respective containers. I opened the door to the cage and placed the carrier's opening against it. The Horror bitty enthusiastically ran inside, and the others followed cautiously.
Finally, I turned to the last cage. I noticed it was the only remaining one with bitties inside it. The bitties were both heavily restrained. A small paint brush and a sash with tiny vials of paint in it were placed just out of reach of what appeared to be an Ink Sansy, who didn't seem to notice us. He was just staring blankly at the items.
The other bitty was an Error Sansy, who seemed to be sleeping. The creak of the cage door opening woke him. The second he caught sight of the carrier, he scrambled to sit up. I reached my free hand towards him. "I'm gonna pick you up now," I said softly. Shakily, the Error bitty nodded. I gently cupped my hand around him and lifted him up.
Quickly setting him in the carrier, I grabbed the Ink bitty and his items. Putting them into the carrier as well, I turned to the guy. "So, how much for all of them?" The guy stammered out a sum that would have been exorbitant to most people, but I barely batted an eye, easily paying the full price. Before I left, the man handed me the remote he used to shock the bitties. I put it in my pocket, intending to dispose of it later.
I carefully set the Classic bitty inside the carrier, which was VERY full. As soon as I got out of the shop, I began laughing. "Haha- I can't believe it. For a moment, I thought he'd stop me from taking all of you!" Then a thought hit me. "Gosh, I hadn't even planned on getting a bitty today. I was just gonna look around and see if any caught my eye. I don't even have any supplies..."
By now, we had gotten outside the alleyway. I set the cage on the ground. "Ok, I'm going to open this up, and at least a couple of you have to get out. I'll carry you." The bitties looked hesitant, glancing to one another as I opened the cage door. "Look, guys," I said after no one got out. "It looks pretty crowded in there. I don't want any of you getting hurt. I'll carry you in my pockets. I just need three or four of you to volunteer."
The Classic bitty was the first to step out. "T-trust you..." he said in a rough voice. The Baby Blue and Fell bitties were next, quickly standing next to their friend, almost guarding him. Finally, the Dream bitty volunteered, making his brother go as well. I fit the Baby Blue and the Fell into my hoodie pocket. The Dream and Nightmare were placed in my hood. I was left with the Classic bitty. After a moment of thought, I put him in my pocket with the Fell and Baby Blue.
I closed the carrier door and began walking again. After a few blocks, though, I began to get hungry. I was so excited to see the bitties today, I had forgotten to eat breakfast. Luckily, I recognized this part of town, and within a few minutes, I was in front of a Burger King. Not the best, but eh, it'll do. "Are you guys hungry?" I asked, looking down at the carrier. They stiffened, watching me warily. "Y-yeah..." A voice broke the silence. It was the probably-Dust bitty.
"Great, because I'm taking you to Burger King," I reply. The muffled squeals and excited grins I got were almost overwhelmingly cute.
The overworked teen at the register looked in surprise at the bitties clinging to me. I had taken them all out of the carrier, so most of the bitties were sitting in my hood, peering wide-eyed at everything. The Error and Ink bitties were in my hoodie pocket, heads poking out, completely untied. The Dream and Nightmare bitties sat on my shoulders. "Hi, can I get, um..." I did a quick count in my head. "Eleven cheeseburger kids' meals and a small whopper combo?" The teen nodded blankly and entered my order in. "That'll take a while to cook," he said. "Your total is $50.38." I paid in cash and took a seat to wait.
As we waited, I looked at the cups in my hand. "What kind of soda do you guys want?" I asked as I walked over to the soda dispenser. They looked at each other for a moment, as if debating on something. "None of us have had soda before, Miss," the Baby Blue said. "Alright. I'll grab one of each flavour, then, so you guys can try all of them!" I decided. Just my luck, there were exactly ten flavors, eleven if you count the iced tea. After taking all the drinks back to the table, I filled up my cup using a bit of every flavour, like usual. Some may think it's gross, to which I reply, 'cowards!'.
I took all the bitties out of my hoodie and set them on our table. "Try each drink, but only a sip," I told them. "There are a lot of you, and we might run out of soda. When all of you are done, you can each pick your favourite flavour."
"Miss, what soda did you get?" asked the Baby Blue. "I mixed all of them together. I don't think you'd like it, though." I chuckled, remembering the many times my friends accidentally mistook my soda for theirs. "It has a... unique flavour."
The bitties all chose their favourite flavour just as our number was called. Luckily, all of them preferred different sodas, or I might have had a rivalry on my hands. I quickly went to the counter and took our food. When I brought it back, the bitties practically pounced on me in their haste to get food. "Woah, slow down. It's not a race, you all get to eat. Get back to your places, please," I said, trying not to drop either the food or a bitty.
Once they heard that, the bitties quickly backed off, and I set a kid's meal down in front of each one before starting on my own burger. They ate very quickly, and, as a result, most got stuck somehow, whether it be in the burger (the Horror, probably-Dust, Cross, Nightmare, and Killer bitties), the bag of fries (the Ink bitty, now wearing his sash), or the bag itself (the Classic and Fell bitties). It would be hilarious if it wasn't for the reasons they were so desperate to get food.
I did have to catch the Classic bitty after he accidentally fell over the edge trying to get out of the bag, though. That was kind of funny.
All the bitties finished eating before me, despite the fact that I had to help over half of them from their food. I wasn't too far behind, though, and I ate my last fry under the watchful eyelights of eleven bitties. Just kidding. I gave my last eleven fries to the bitties because they wouldn't stop begging like puppy dogs.
"Alright," I said after disposing of the trash (I kept the toys from the kid's meals, obviously). "It's time to go to the store, and then we'll go home." The bitties took their places on my hoodie, and I began walking, but stopped once I was outside. "Oh! I almost forgot!" I exclaimed, sitting on the nearby bench. "I need to take your collars off... I don't know how though. If I try to take them off now, I might accidentally activate them and hurt you. So, I'm giving you a choice."
The bitties, who had at first looked confused, then overjoyed, practically beamed at the thought of getting a choice. "I can try to take them off now, but I might hurt you in the process, or we can wait until I get home, where I have more tools. Either way, your collars will be removed today."
"I don't mind waiting a little."
"Nor do I."
"Same here."
One by one, all the bitties agreed to wait until we were home.
I began walking again, and we were soon at the store. I went to the bitty aisle first. It had clothes, equipment, cutlery, basically everything a bitty needed.
I went to the clothes first. "Pick like four outfits each," I told my crew, setting them on the shelf. They immediately scattered, and I put some generic bitty stuff like cutlery and catwalks into the cart.
I also grabbed one of those huge bitty 'apartments' that were made for bitty shelters and whatnot. It had twelve rooms, so there would be an extra one. The building was advertised as being 33 inches (~83.8 cm) tall, with each room 20 × 20 × 10 inches (50.8 × 50.8 × 25.4 cm), but I had to build it myself. There were three floors, four rooms per floor. The walls were an entire inch thick of wood, so they were pretty durable. I grabbed a bunch of craft items and furniture, too, so they could decorate their rooms.
I turned to the cart and found, to my surprise, all eleven bitties, sitting on the box the apartments were in. A small mountain of clothing was in the cart as well. I smiled happily. "Are you all done? Wonderful. I've got most of the things, but you guys need to choose a set of sheets. Make sure to get the kind that comes with a pillowcase and blanket," I instructed as I took them to the sheet section. "Then, we'll pay for the stuff and go home."
As they ran off to find their favourite colours, I grabbed a dozen bed frames (the 12-pack was cheaper and easier than buying 11 individual beds), foam mattress pads (same reason), and pillows (see above parentheses). I tossed them in the cart and waited.
Soon, the bitties came running back, a package of bedding in each one's grasp. They hopped in the cart, and we went to the self-checkout.
The bitties were anxious to get home, and helped to scan the items. In fact, they practically took over as soon as I showed them how to use the scanner. The Baby Blue, Fell, and Classic bitties tossed clothes to the Dream and Nightmare bitties, who scanned the items. They then threw them to the Ink and Error bitties, who put them in a plastic bag. When the bag was full, the Horror, Dust (I asked during lunch), Cross, and Killer bitties put it in the cart. I helped by rescuing any dropped items and catching bitties that lost their balance. Finally, only the box with the apartment in it was left. That, I did myself, as it was too big and heavy for the bitties to lift, even working together.
The final total was somewhere around $400, I didn't really pay attention. I was more focused on figuring out how I was gonna carry three bags of clothes and miscellaneous items, a medium-sized box, and eleven bitties at the same time. Eventually, we figured out a solution. The Classic and Fell bitties would each hold the handles of a bag and sit in my hoodie pocket, the last bag would be held by the bitties in my hood, and I would carry the box.
Luckily, it was only a mile to my house, just outside city limits. Well, to my driveway, at least. I have one of those driveways that are like 500 feet long, but it's fine because dense forest surrounds my property on all sides, and I like my privacy. Plus, it decreases solicitors. Actually, I'm pretty sure solicitors are advised not to try to go to my house, after what happened to the last guy...
Anyways, we finally arrived at my house. I say 'house', but it was really more of a mansion. A wonderful, gothic-style mansion. It has two stories and a basement. I've never counted, but I would guess around 100 rooms? 120? Plenty more than I really need, at any rate.
"It's huge!" exclaimed the Baby Blue. "Yeah," agreed the Classic Sansy. "When you said, 'house', I was expecting something like my last-" He stopped abruptly. "I mean, something a bit smaller."
"How do you even keep all those rooms clean?" the Fell bitty asked. "Does someone else live with you?" I took a moment to reply, thinking on what to say to avoid too many questions. "No," I decided upon. "They just don't get dirty."
"Not even from dust?" the Fell bitty countered, sounding suspicious. "Nope! Pretty cool, huh?" I answered, grinning.
We finally got inside, and I was able to unload everything on the kitchen counter. I dumped out the clothes. "Grab your outfits, everyone. I'm going to work on building the apartments," I said, walking out of the room. I poked my head back in. "When you're done, or if you need me for any reason, there's a bell thingy by the sink. Just pull it and I'll come. It can be heard all throughout the house." I withdrew my head and went quickly to my room. No telling when they'd be done.
I had just gotten the frame built and wired when I heard the unmistakable chime of the dinner-bell. I hurried back to the kitchen to find all the bitties sitting on top of the bedding set they chose, with neat piles of clothing next to them. They had gotten two sets of each outfit, except the Nightmare bitty, who had two different daytime outfits. The rest had two identical sets each of pajamas and daywear. They had also divied up the beds, dressers, nightstands, lamps, pillows, and mirrors that I bought, with the extra one of each (they were cheaper by the dozen, okay) set aside. The Ink bitty was currently organising the art supplies I bought, which were mostly carpet swatches and acrylic paint. And brushes, of course. Can't forget the brushes.
I grinned widely. "Alright, great! Now, I'm gonna get those collars off ya and then you'll get a bath and change into your new clothes! How does that sound?" The bitties' smiles grew with every word, and I quickly had an orderly line of bitties. Seems they learned from last time. I began carefully snipping the collars with a wire cutter, and soon, eleven black circles lay on the countertop. With a sweep of my hand, I deposited them in the trash can. "Grab an outfit and follow me," I said, setting the last bitty down. "It's bath time."
-----Smol Time Skip-----
After the bath, I disposed of (read: threw away) the bitties' old clothes. The bitties were now squeaky clean and in brand new clothes, which they absolutely loved. The Ink bitty was chasing the Error bitty around, trying to smack him with his paintbrush, while the Fell bitty munched on a popcorn kernel. How did he even get that?
Meanwhile, I finished up the apartment building. It had little windows and everything. I put the final nail in and leaned back, watching the bitties play with their BK toys. The Nightmare bitty was play-fighting his brother while the Dust and the Baby Blue bitties argued over who would win. The Classic Sansy had somehow managed to make his toy into a bed, by falling asleep on it, while the Killer, Cross, and Horror Sansies were using their toys to fight each other. It was great.
Glancing at the clock, however, made it clear the tomfoolery had to come to an end. I had to start dinner, and the bitties had to decorate their rooms. I rounded everyone up and directed them to the art supplies, saying I'll help them install and paint stuff later.
I began making dinner. Spaghetti sounded good, so that's what I made. I had the noodles cooking within twenty minutes, and I knew it would be at least ten more before I had to stir them, so I decided to check on the bitties.
I found that they had all picked out the colours and carpet they wanted, and were awaiting my assistance. They were a bit disappointed when I told them I couldn't help right then, but quickly got over it when I told them I would help after dinner. I lead them to the kitchen, where I had installed only the first of many ladders. It was designed so that bitties could easily climb up to wherever surface it was attached to, in this case the counter.
It seemed like mere moments until the spaghetti was done. I grabbed a serving platter and placed twelve perfect plates of spaghetti onto it, before lifting it into the air effortlessly and carrying it to the next room, which was the dining room. I had already set the table. "It's been so long since I've had a full table," I said happily, beginning to distribute the food. The bitties began ravaging the food as soon as I put it down. I served myself last.
-----another time skip-----
Dinner was, unsurprisingly, over quickly. The bitties were eager to work on their rooms, practically dragging me back to my bedroom, where both the apartments and the supplies were. I quickly got to work, helping nail down the carpets and painting the walls and ceilings, not to mention the bedframes, nightstands, and dressers. Oh, and the doors. And helping with the curtains. Once everything was done and over with, it was almost 8 pm. We had been working for around 2 1/2 hours nonstop. Luckily, it would only take an hour for the paint to dry, then we could set up the rooms and go to bed.
In the meantime, the bitties rested on my bed while I did the dishes and started the laundry. Once that was done, I lay on my bed too, but just for a moment...
