Prologue: The Orphanage

-TW- Orphans, mention of abuse

-CW- fluff

Tommy hates this place, he believes the orphanage is filled with horrible people. Chubby spoiled kids, abusive caretakers, irresponsible 18 year olds, and annoying crying babies.
He despises all of them, the screams and complaints of the little kids, those babies who cry for no reason, all of the people and children who give up and allow other people to clean up after them.
The 18 year olds who smoke and drink outside, the oblivious and abusive caretakers that punish the wrong people for other kids problems, and the kids who blame anyone but themselves.

He's only 15, and he gets blamed for everything the other kids do. The little kids breaking something, or the older kids spending all the caretakers money and leaving a mess of things.

It's unfair, the older kids have to take care of the younger kids, but most of the oldest kids don't want to take care of them, so they starve.
And the rooms are crowded with uncomfortable beds, some of the kids having to sleep on the floor. It sucks.

Tommy, being younger, is bossed around a lot, and, him being a teenager, makes him expected to take care of the younger kids and he gets blamed when they starve.
And whats worse is that he's a raccoon shifter. Tommy has raccoon hybrid features. And recently found out he can turn into a small raccoon with dirty blonde fur and brown stripes. This makes the other kids and adults hate him even more.

Im sick of this place, he constantly thinks. Until recently he thought of a plan, a plan to dig under the fence, a plan to escape this hell hole of a place that the other kids call "home".
All of them except him, the little boy.

Only nine years old and he was shunned by his parents for being different, for being like Tommy.
Fundy's a cat shifter, although he's too young to shift into a cat safely. He's ginger and blind, but he's the only kid Tommy knows that doesn't cry, who doesn't give up and allow others to solve his problems--and is actually nice.

He always wears one of Tommy's white shirts with red sleeves, black pants, and white shoes. He's started to follow Tommy around, usually trying to hide the fact he was. Tommy, un-admittedly, has grown fond of him. And he knew that he had to take the kid with him if he were to escape.

The least I can do is find him a better home than this hell hole.

"Psst, Fundy," Tommy slipped out of his room, to Fundy's room, at 2:15 am, "Come on, we're getting out of here."

He looked up in Tommy's direction blinking the sleep away from his eyes, he nodded and creeped out of bed and followed Tommy out of the orphanage, to the fence.

Tommy led him to the outside fence, where he had worked for the past year or so to make a small hole under. Perfect for a raccoon, and a small kid.
"Ok Fundy, creep through this hole in front of you and wait for me on the other side, ok?" Tommy looks at the nine year old ginger beside him as he nods.
He isn't much of a speaker at times either.

After he wiggled through the hole Tommy squeezed after him. "Now what Tommy..?" He looked up at Tommy's direction with his big cat like eyes. "Now we get moving," Tommy picks him up in his arms as a human.
He walks through the cool crunchy autumn leaves, carrying Fundy, slightly shivering.

They past town and town again, Tommy leaving Fundy in a warm spot usually and running in to steal some food as a human than shift into a raccoon to bring it back for them two. Often they have to gather berries from the woods, but if Tommy's lucky, he can steal some bread or meat. Tommy constantly reminds himself that he can't give up, he can't cry or show weakness in front of Fundy. He needs to show that he can be strong even in tough situations.
Be strong for Fundy.
One time Tommy even caught a bird for Fundy to eat. It was a great achievement for Tommy, and Fundy was very grateful for the fresh meat of the bird.

They've been out on their own for about a month, it's practically winter now. Tommy's gotten way skinnier, Fundy has too, but not as skinny as poor Tommy has gotten recently. The next town Tommy's taking Fundy to has a nice name, in Tommy and Fundy's opinion.

L'manburg.

Let's see if we have better luck in this town. Tommy thinks as he carries Fundy through the growing snowy floor and towards the gate.

RaccoonInnit! Whoo, we have Cat Fundy too. Gotta love their brotherly love.

I hope you enjoyed!
