Chapter 17 Percy
Arachne slowly walked towards Percy and Annabeth. Her eyes looked hungry and her pincher thingys kept twitching. Percy wasn't sure if that was normal for spiders, but he didn't bother asking. Annabeth already thought he was a seaweed brain. He didn't need need Arachne thinking the same thing.
"Times up." she said it the way a little kid would say 'ITS CHRISTMAS OH MY GOD'
"Centaur poop!" Percy said, hoping his voice sounded steady, though he doubted it. "No way an hour has already passed!"
Arachne smiled, well as close to a smile as she could. "What makes you so sure? Do you have any proof Perseus Jackson?"
"Well...um." She'd nailed him. How could you tell time in Tartarus? Answer: you couldn't. Fourtanetly Annabeth, his amazingly smart girlfriend, saved him. "Whats your proof, Arachne?"
"I don't need proof. I say times up so times up. Any more questions?"
Percy raised his hand. "Yes, actually. First, will you let us go?"
"No."
"Perfect. Second, would you feel offened if I killed you?"
"You can try but you wont be able to."
"Thanks for that information but that's not what I asked. Please answer the previous question."
"Alright. Yes, I would feel offended if you killed me, which you can't."
Percy nodded. "Glad we understand each other."
Arachne hissed in annoyance. "Enough talk. I'm hungry. Let's get this over with."
Annabeth gripped his arm so hard, he was sure it would turn purple and fall off, which would be pretty bad. And gross. She had tiny tears, which looked like crystals against her gray eyes. Her golden hair cascaded over her shoulders so perfectly that you could almost forget that it was covered in cobwebs and dirt. Percy shook his head. Got a little distracted there.
He sighed and stood up, forcing Annabeth to let go of him. "Ok, but uh what exactly is 'this?'"
"Simple," Arachne said. "I kill you, eat your insides, ect."
"Yeah real simlple," he muttered. "But first, you need to swear on the River Styx that after you eat me," he shivered. "Annabeth will get to go safely. AND that you will not hurt her in any way."
"Yes, yes. As you teens say now a days 'whatever.' Now are you ready?"
He looked at Annabeth, maybe for the last time. "Ok, I'm ready."
He reached into his pocket and brought out Riptide. He expected Arachne to cower in fear and say something like Yikes! That sword looks sharp! How about we just call it draw? But of course she didn't. Instead she charged at alarming speed. Percy barely had time to roll to the side and escape certain death. He kicked the spider in the side and raised his sword ready to strike, but he never got the chance.
Arachne shot a cord of web at his sword, disarming him in a second. He barely had time to prcess what the heck just happened when she shot another piece of web at his chest. It was way more powerful than possible and it sent him flying a good ten feet. He hit the cave wall and crumbled to the floor. He heard Annabeth scream his name, but it sounded muffled, like he was underwater.
Arachne ran up to him and placed one of her many legs on his stomach. Pain shot through his body, causing dots to pervade his vision. Arachne stood over him, ready to bend down and end it all. He closed his eyes, waiting for death......
But it never came. Instead, Percy heard a giant "WOOOOOOOOF!" and suddenly, there was no more pressure on his stomach. He opened his eyes and saw that Mrs. O'Leary, his awesome and big hellhound, was attacking Arachne. And on his dogs back was
"Jason?"
The son of Jupiter jumped off Mrs. O'Leary's back and ran over to Percy. "Sup."
"What-how-what?"
Jason smirked. "Glad to see you too. I'll answer all questions later. Come on, we got our selves a monster to kill."
He was right. Mrs. O'Leary was strong, but there was no way she could kill Arachne by herself. Percy got up and ran to his sword. He gripped his blade, and together, they charged.
Jason used his flying powers to distract the giant spider, while Percy came up from behind. Every time he came close to striking though, Arachne would blast him with another clump of spiderweb. It hurt and it was getting really annoying. They had been trying to kill her for like five minutes now, and Percy was starting to get tired. She just moved too fast.
He barely dodged another web-attack when Annabeth yelled "Percy! Her legs! Get her legs!"
Her legs! DUH! Why hadn't he thought of it sooner? He made eye contact with Jason and hoped his eyes said Distract her while I cut off her legs but it probably looked more like Dont chop off my head! Aim for the spider!
Maybe it was pure luck, or maybe Jason actually was smart, but he understood. He dove toward Arachne then shot up, his timing perfect. Arachne jumped trying to reach him, giving Percy just enough time to chop of three legs.
He was about to congratulate himself when Jason yelled "Look out! Incoming!"
Arachne had somehow shot a string of web at his stomach, making the son of Jupiter go flying; staright towards Percy.
They collided and tumbled a little bit before stopping. Both demigods had lost their swords during the impact. Mrs. O'Leary was down. She had already been tired from shadow traveling, and this fight had worn her out.
Arachne slowly dragged herself toward them. "Finally," she said. "My hunger will come to an end. Any last words?"
"Uh, help?" Jason said.
"Don't eat me! Take Jason. He's more juicy."
"Dude!"
"Silence!" Arachne spat. "Time for de-"
Her sentence was cut short. Where she had been a moment ago, was now a pile of monster dust and Annabeth, holding Riptide in her hands.
"Annabeth!" Percy said. He got to his feet and gave her a bear hug. She sobbed into his shirt while Jason checked on Mrs. O'Leary. Thankfully, the hellhound was ok, a little beat up and tired, but ok. They woke her up. They would have to move soon.
Percy looked at his feet. "Hey uh guys?"
"Yeah?" Jason said.
"Where do monster go when they die?" he asked.
"Tartarus," Annabeth said. She had reduced her tears to little sniffles.
"Then what happens when they die in Tartarus?"
Annabeth and Jason locked gazes.
"Run?" Percy asked.
"Run," they agreed.
They dashed out of the cavern just in time; Arachne was starting to reform.
"Which way?" Jason kept looking over his shoulder.
"Left!" Annabeth said. She grabbed Percy's hand and dragged him away from the cave and monster that was inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Percy, Jason, and Annabeth all sat in a little cave they had found. It was far away from Arachne's cavern, and high up so monsters would have trouble getting to it.
"Ok," Percy said. "I guess I should say...uh..."
"Thanks?" Jason supplied.
Percy took a deep breath. "Jason....thank you."
"For?" Jason raised his eyebrows.
Percy gritted his teeth. "Thank you for saving me and Annabeth from Arachne. We probably would of died."
"Probably?"
"Fine. We would of died. Happy?"
Jason closed his eyes. "Quite."
Annabeth cleared her throat. "Great. Now it's time for you to explain how the heck you got here."
Jason told them about Nico's plan and how he had volunteered to go after them.
"You know you might die, right?" Percy asked.
Jason nodded.
"And that you're a complete idiot?"
"Yep."
"But....thanks for coming after us, man." Percy said, not meeting his gaze. "It shows you do care. Somewhat."
Jason laughed. "Whatever Jackson." His eyes widened. "I almost forgot!" He reached in to his backpack and brought out Piper's cornicopia. "I stole- I mean, borrowed this from Piper. I figured you couldn't get fast food here."
Percy felt his mouth water; he hadnt eaten in a while. And he seriously loved food. Annabeth looked about ready to cry. "Jason," she said. "Thank you."
Jason shrugged. "Sure. Couldn't let you guys just die from hunger now could I?"
Percy smiled. He wasn't sure why he resented Jason so much. Sure he was a showoff and all, but he was a good guy.
They ate so much food, that Percy was sure his pants would pop at any minute. Things were finally starting to look up.
Annabeth yawned, put her head in his lap, and fell asleep.
Percy looked at the floor. "Jason.....you need to go."
Jason stared at him blakely. "What?"
"Look, Tartarus is way too dangerous. I couldn't stand it if....Piper would never forgive me if......I would never forgive myself if you died here. You have to go."
"But-"
"Besides, I need you to guide the others. They need you. Lets face it, you're a natural leader. They look up to you."
Jason stayed silent for a long time. "Percy, I...I'm sorry we argued."
"So'kay."
"I guess I just got jealous. All my life, I've been a leader, you know? And then you showed up, and everyone liked you right away and looked up to you and acknowledged you as the leader. And I guess I just didn't feel important anymore." He rubbed his eyes. "Gods, I sound like a baby."
"Well," Percy said. "Maybe a little."
"Thanks," he said sarcasticly.
"Dude, don't feel upset. That's how I've felt like this entire quest. It's obvious you're a leader. I mean, you have lightning powers and stuff. Your dads Jupiter. As much as it pains me to say, you are prety powerful."
Jason looked away, his eyes closed. He started to snore.
Percy sighed. "Another amazing speech by Percy Jackson everybody."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Annabeth sat up and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. "Where's Jason and Mrs. O'Leary?"
"I, uh," Percy said. "I sent them back."
"What? Why?' she demanded.
"All the monsters in Tartarus are already coming after us. With Jason's scent combined with ours, we would be dead in minutes!" He didn't mention what he had said to Jason. It was pretty embarrasing.
Annabeth covered her face with her hands. She didn't cry just sat there.
"Percy," she finally said. "Did you.....did you make him leave?"
"Um, no?"
"Percy!"
"I'm sorry! He wouldn't agree so I kinda, bonked him on the head and told Mrs. O'Leary to take him back to the others. But its for the best!"
"Percy, why didn't you have us go with him?" She looked upset and mad. Bad combo.
"There was no way Mrs. O'Leary was strong enough to do that. Plus, we still need to close the doors."
"I hate when you're right."
He got to his feet. "And I love it. C'mon. We better get moving."
He helped her up, and together, holding hands, they headed off into the darkness.
